What's YOUR Idea of Comfort Food

I'm always hearing people on radio, TV, magazines, online, etc. referring to Macaroni & Cheese, Shepard's Pie, Chicken Pot Pie, etc. as Comfort Food. I kinda smile & roll my eyes and think to myself nope that's not my idea of Comfort food (not that I don't like those foods) :)

*My* idea of Comfort Food is Enchiladas with Refried Beans & Spanish Rice (I'm half Hispanic) or Whole Pinto Beans cooked in the slow cooker with lots of seasoning including lots of black pepper served over piping hot steamed rice and cornbread (I'm half white..grandmother was from the South..I think this was her way of making them).

So what's YOUR idea of Comfort Food?

I'm glad you live far away. My husband would probably fall in love with you. As it is he is married to me a gringo who happens to make pretty darn good pinto beans and a Shepherd's pie. He's the one who makes the most excellent Spanish Rice. Yum. What a wonderful post. I am drooling.

I'm wishing it would hurry up and cool off here because I want some comfort food and eating it in 85 degree weather with 90% humidity just doesn't make it taste as good.

*ETA - Forgot to put my one of my favorites on the list - Pumpkin Cream Cheese Bread. It's one of my favorite things to make in the fall and something everyone asks me for.

I agree with Nicole P.......thick, hot bowl of soup, full of veggies, red beans, potatoes, lentil, barley....any of that...YUM! Add a slice of Italian bread and I am good to go, especially now that the weather is turning. I'm hispanic too and there are some awesome dishes that just take me back to my childhood. Refried beans being the #1.

It depends on what kind of comfort I need...

Starting to get sick: homemade chicken noodle soup with LOTS of carrots (like 3 times the normal amount) and thick homemade noodles. And a big jug of orange juice on the side.

Worn out from a week of dieting and working: Pizza. Actually, tomato sauce and cheese is good ANYTIME. I crave it constantly and will put it on eggs and veggies at breakfast, on steamed cabbage or zuchinni at lunch/dinner and on pasta when I am feeling "bad" (aka not watching what I eat)

PMS/tired: tirimisu (for that instant caffeine jolt) and/or any other baked goodie

I love baked macaroni and cheese made my way from scratch.

Cheesecake and tiramisu are favorite comfort food desserts.

Tamales(beef ONLY no chicken that is an abomination! :P) with carnitas, rice, beans and horchata. Actually now I'm bummed as there is nowhere in my area that I have found that makes great horchata. No, the packaged stuff to me is not comforting. :(

Freshly baked breads

Dressing(aka stuffing)with nuts and cranberries

My mom's meatloaf! Ask anyone in the family and that's what everyone will say! If by chance I can't get any of her meatloaf I guess I would settle for homemade stew and homemade cornbread or biscuits (I would have to be eating it on a cold fall/winter night, in front of a fireplace, in my robe and fluffy socks, with only the crackle of the fire to intrude on my silence)

A cup of good tea is my morning 'go to' comfort food. It's a morning ritual that reminds me that all is well and good.

In the afternoon, 'comfort food' might be something like crackers, cheese and anchovy sandwiches. Salty, yummy snack. Seaweed, too. Love the sesame seaweed.

Nighttime, dinnertime comfort foods: veggies left to stew in the slow cooker: sweet potatoes, red peppers, carrots, potato, mandarin oranges and kalamata olives with a little basil and thyme. Heaven!

or a robust red sauce with summer squash, green beans, peppers, flying saucer squash, cooked up spicy with some crusty bread.

Just about any vegetarian or seafood Thai food. mmmm...
