What Is Your Favorite Air Freshener?

This weekend I was so sick and depressed. I made the mistake of coming here and looking for support. That was a disaster. But I am happy to report that the client of mine that has a terrible yucky air freshener in her car does care enough to get rid of it. She HAS already changed her dryer softener sheet for me. Because of a miscommunication on my part, she thought it was okay. I thought she was waiting to finish the box she currently had of dryer sheets. As it turns out, that was never the problem. It was just Friday that I figured out it was her car causing me so much pain (migraines). Today I am running out for some essential oils and I am going to buy a thing for her car that plugs into the lighter so that she can use the essential oils in her car. I'm paying for it in order to thank her for being willing to switch.

I'm so glad that in REAL life people are much nicer than what I ran into in here. I went ahead and did some googling. I was pleased to report that I found several threads on Mamapedia where people complain of their teachers and daycare providers using perfumes and the parents of these kiddos wanting them to stop using the perfume. Funny how when it's the teacher or daycare provider wearing the perfume that no one has ANY trouble telling her to stop. But I wouldn't have it any other way. I make all kinds of accommodations for my kids. I've changed laundry detergents, diaper brands, wipe brands, and many other things through the years.

So how many of us here thinks that glade and Febreeze, and other name brand stuff like that just plain STINKS?!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Of course, you do realize that according to a large segment of the population, we have a brain disorder or we are just plain looney if we get headaches because of perfume!

It's sad...If a person gets the runs or skin problems from food, or if they are allergic to peanuts, or if they have acid reflux from certain foods, they are TOTALLY believed. No one says those things are all made up in their head.

Open windows are my favorite air freshener. Artificial smells and "fresheners" that other people apparently find pleasant do make me miserably ill, and to my nose, most of them truly "stink." There's a chemical component that I find repellent.

Added: Thanks for trying to bring this widespread problem into the public consciousness. I have been trying to make this problem known for the 25 years or so that I've been suffering from chemical sensitivities. There is a great deal of advertising, and profit, pushing chenically-scented products and trying to convince the public that life is sweeter with their toxins.

S L M,
I didn't see your other post, but I'm assuming you have a sensitivity to fragrance?
My mother was like that. Before she retired, I could not believe how RUDE some of her co-workers were. She nicely asked & explained that their scents gave her headaches for the entire day, evening, night causing loss of sleep, etc. They would refrain from wearing perfume for 1-2 days and then right back to it. It truly was nearly debilitating for her. This went on for years. Youth Dew. Poison. etc.
Bottom line: People don't want to have to accommodate people to the extent that it might involve their lives for a second.
If my perfume was making someone that I worked with deathly ill, I would have no problem doing whatever made it easier. But that's me.....
Actually, since retiring, her allergies and sensitivities have lessened. Weird.
I despise those fakey airfresheners. How many products like that do we need? Automatic eye "smell sensitive poufs", toilet paper roll air fresheners, plug ins, Walflowers, on and on....
I think if your house is nice and clean, gets a lot of fresh air, there are few things that can smell better than that!

Sorry to hear you didn't get the support you were looking for and needed!!
I am like you, I get horrible migraines with certain scents. I would not be put out in any way if a teacher, daycare provider, co-worker, etc. asked me to change my perfume, air freshner, dryer sheets or anything!
Glad to hear the Mom was willing to work with you on it :)

I did not read your original post but I will chime in to say that if my smelly stuff was making someone physically sick I would have no problem changing it and would hope that person would tell me about it. Anyway I don't like any of the spray air freshners either. I did have a BAD allergic reaction to a glade one once. To keep my house smelling nice I use Bath and Body Works Wallflowers. For the car I just take a small jar candle and put it in a side pocket with the lid off.

My sister has chronic migraines that we are still trying to get to the bottom of and perfumes, candles if any kind trigger them. When she comes to my house I make sure nothing is sprayed and no candles are lite. I would accommodate anyone without question if ur was needed in a health situation. I haven't been on in a few days so I didn't read the other post but im sorry you didn't get help here. Good luck mama
*** I can't agree on febreeze! Im obsessed with the one that has gain in it!
