What Can You Tell Me About the Joliet/Plainfield Area?

Hi Everyone,

Currently we live in the NW suburbs (Elk Grove Village), but we're looking to sell our house and move. We've been in the same area for the past 13 years, and I LOVE where I live. The problem is that my husband believes we can get more house for the money if we move further out. Which seems to be true, but everything is here . . . the pediatrician (who I love), our doctors, his work, friends, etc. So it will be very different living elsewhere. We've looked at houses to the North, South, and West of where we are. We saw one that we both really liked in Joliet (If you go a block further west you're in Plainfield), but we don't know much about the area. Any of you live in this area, or have friends/family that live in this area? Is it safe? How are the schools? Anyone have a great pediatrician in this area? Please give me your opinions, experiences, and advice.

Thanks so much!

What can I do next?

I personally feel that you should stay in Elk Grove. My sister lives there (Arlington Hts & Biesterfield)and if we could move out of the city I would go there in a heart beat. My 2 friends live in Plainfield and one in Joliet, they have nice houses and they are huge for less money, however they have ridiculous taxes since there are so many people moving out there and they constantly are building new schools etc....
Think about whats right for your family and choose from there. Personally I live Elk Grove better.

I think that you should stay where you are.. If yopu do move out there, DONT go with LEACH home builders.. You will get more house for your money, but its not worth it. We built a house with them and when it was done we had crached windows thae we missing parts of the locks, nails sticking up through the flooring, crooked cabinets, and the best an already leaking roof that they supposedly fixed well it leaked everytime it rained and never got professionally fixed. They are building so many out there so fast the builders are just not doing a good job in my opinion...Hope this helps...

Dear Lynn,

I agree with the rest of the responses here. Stay put if you are happy with your current residence! While it is true that you may get more house for your money, don't forget about property taxes! My ex and I had a home built in Bolingbrook on the border of Naperville, and one of the reasons why many of the original owners no longer live in our subdivision is because the property taxes are so high (thanks in part to the new Bolingbrook High School that was built a couple of years ago). I am very thankful that we can continue to afford that home! Should you decide to move to Plainfield, do your research on builders. I am very partial to Pulte because of their quality work, customer service and overall reputation. They offer homebuyers an array of options and will custom build if their options do not work for you. My house was built by them, and I can't brag enough!

In reference to Plainfield and Joliet...I just moved into an apartment within the vicinity and while I like it, I find that I am not as pleased with it as I anticipated. The area that I really like in Joliet is the Cathedral area- there you will find what I call "character houses" that look like they were taken from Oak Park and River Forest. Very beautiful!

I will say that I don't plan to be in the area beyond a year...for me personally, it's just not a good fit. Naperville is definitely more my style because it is similar to the North Shore where I grew up. Plus, it's much closer to I355 which I take on a daily basis to work.

I don't know if I helped you much, but to reiterate, if you are happy where you are, then don't move! You will probably regret it! If I can be of more help, feel free to email me at ____@____.com of luck! D.

That it is a long drive from the Northwest suburbs (we have friends in Plainfield). If the only reason you are moving is to get a bigger house, I would not move if it were me. Living in several different communities finding all of the positives you have listed is not easy. I would look into adding on before moving if it were me. Especially if your husband is planning on keeping the same job. Long commutes are enough to drive anyone insane, not to mention how much less family time you will have because of it. Good Luck!
