Getting dressed helps me to transition from one frame of mind to the next. Sort of like a costume helps to get one into character.
A friend of mine was just accepted into medical school. He's been a very dedicated student and I asked him what helped to keep him on academic track. Before class, he said, he'd put on a suit vest. He said be felt more professional and that helped him take himself seriously as a student.
I am more productive when I'm in role as well. Cleaning/Construction-Ephie wears boys jeans, a ratty tang top, and tennis shoes. Mama Ephie at home or running into town wears comfy fitted jeans, a soft top and sweater, and boots. Sunday Ephie wears PJs until noon and then repeats above combination sans makeup. Professional Ephie wears boots, tights, a fitted knee length skirt and fitted sweater, light makeup, and a necklace.
Every morning I put on my watch. Every night I take it off. I choose not to recognize time once the kids go to bed.
When I get dressed, it has nothing to do with the people around me. I put on what ever best served the purpose of wearing clothes and what makes me feel the way I want to feel. I'm a visual person. Clothes are fun. They are where aesthetics gets to meet function and I like putting thought and intention into my presentation.
If I'm having a lazy day and am wearing lazy-feeling clothes, I wouldn't change for my husband. Whenever he gets home he looses his shirt and one of his socks (not kidding). He's really ambivalent about aesthetics (although he's very particular about smell and texture). Unless I'm naked or wearing sassy undies, he wouldn't know the difference. In this way we are very dissimilar.
