Sahms What Did You Wear Today?

Another post prompted me to ask this question. I'm wondering what you SAHMs wear everyday? I struggle to stay out of a frumpy, pajama-like rut all the time. I would like to wear outfits that are flattering and presentable, but PRACTICAL for my daily life. Which is going to the grocery and other shopping, taking the kids to activities and preschool, housework, appointments, and occasionally a social lunch. I'm dragging a 4 and 2 year old around, and nothing lasts more than one wearing without needing washed. It's hard on the nights when we have an activity and the other moms are coming from work. They always look so nice in their work attire, with the hair and accessories to match. Even if I'm "ready", I still feel homely in my jeans and sweater (with sticky fingerprints on it lol). I'm just wondering what the rest of you put together for your look on a typical day? Today I sported black yoga pants, a black and white fashion T with a black fleece zip up jacket. Black and white tennis shoes were on my feet.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I love all your responses! I've enjoyed reading what all of you wear, and am glad I am not alone! I have pajama days, and have considered the pajama jeans as well lol. My husband says I look cute, and I should be comfortable. I guess he's right, but many of you pointed out that the hair and makeup being done are key. I'm going to put more effort there, because I usually skip the face and hair goes in a pony. It's true that even if I'm in a cute outfit, I still feel undone. Thanks for sharing!

I have a mom "uniform" I wear a wrap skirt (knee lenght) and a tank top with incorporated shelf bra. I live in Hawaii though so if snow or cold ever showed up I would need to change that up...

I did a "dare" 2 years ago to dress like June Cleaver for 30 days... meaning, a skirt, heels (1 inch or smaller for me!), nice top, necklace and makeup and hair done before I eat breakfast. I really loved how I felt not being a frump so I kinda continue it with a skirt and nice shoes.

Here where I live, people wear shorts & slippers/flip-flops. Jeans.
Done up or down.

That is how I dress.
Or casual flowy skirts. Tank tops, flip-flops.

No worries.

All those women dressed up per after work... they're all wishing they can just get home and UNdress into more comfortable clothing without hosiery.

I haven't changed my make-up, clothing or style really since becoming a SAHM. I wear jeans and a t-shirt everyday-I only wear a blouse or sweaters if I'm going out. I don't tend to wear dresses. I only wear chapstick day to day and will put on other make up only when going out.
And by going out I mean like a date with my husband or a night out with the girls.

I came up with the idea a little while ago about having a mom "uniform" for daily wear. I have five pairs of pants ie jeans, capris, whatever, I mean a black pair of yoga pants is cool too ;) I then have five (I actually have more) tops that are not t-shirts. They aren't necessarily the hottest fashion trend, but they are tops. Ex. I will often put something like a black tank under a brightly colored little shrug (small light weight sweater) and throw on a pair of jeans, some black flip flops with my toe nails painted and go! Of course I am in TX so we are already wearing flip flops, but you could just do a closed toe shoe, like some cute little black sketchers or something. I have long hair so a lot days I will pull it back, but I do a cute pony tail and make sure I don't have any fly aways, so I still look put together. I always dab a little concealer under my eyes, a little pencil to my brows, some light mascara, a bit of blush, lipgloss and then go! Just a small amount of make-up, smooth hair and clothing that does not include a t-shirt will go so far to make you feel more attractive. I save my t-shirts for hard core cleaning or the gym. If I go out, I wear some black pants a nice top, not in the group of tops for daily wear and some heels. I don't have a lot of night wear bc I am still a bit chunky from having my babies, but I don't go out that much so it works out!! But if I do go out, I grab a quick shower, straighten my hair, do my make-up, and look HOT!! Even chubby, I am still extra hot and I want to look good, but I don't put pressure on myself to look like I am going to an office everyday, because I am not!! Just a little color here, some cute toenails there, some nice highlights now and again does the trick, and my big thing was to rid myself of t-shirts!!! Now a cute tee is ok, but like something that has a slogan of some sports team from the early '90's must go!! Good luck! Oh in answer to your original post, today I wore jeans, and brown empire waist shirt with an animal print sash, a sparkly brown tank underneath and flip flops. A little jewelry, nothing fancy with light make-up and pulled back hair :D Good luck!!! We have a hard job but little things like looking cute do help!!

I wore nice jeans, a red button down top, ankle boots (black) makeup on and hair done. Toe nails are done too. Always wearing earrings, and some jewelry.
I am 41 and have 3 children at home. I get up 30 mins before they do. I wash my face, put makeup on (all the way, like going to church) and do my hair. I used to have medium length hair, I had it cut to above my shoulders and wear it cute everyday. I then wear nice jeans and a pretty shirt. If the shirt is clean and i am going to a different store than i did that day, i will wear it again the next day. I am always ready for the "unexpected" doorbell, emergency, make a fast errand etc... My friend taught me, to freshen up and get out of my pjs, you will stop feeling frumpy if you change your clothes, and fix your hair and put on makeup. It is true. I have also lost a few pounds because i am not eating because i am feeling frumpy, or whatever. PLUS I want to look pretty when my husband gets home. I am sure he works with pretty women and I don't want him to come home to a frumpy sweatpants mom. I look my best when he comes home!

Well....yoga pants a t-shirt and a long cardigan. But, I did fix my hair and put on some makeup today if that makes me seem more fashionable and less lazy. I am not going to bust out my former business attire just to get spit up and glitter all over it. Plus I am into a natural fabric thing and yoga pants are oh so conveniently made of cotton and they don't irritate my c-section area like jeans do.

Sounds great for the gym or a day of errands, but if you're going to be gracing people with your presence perhaps putting an 'outfit' together would be more appropriate and allow you to feel more comfortable around these other women. My Mom runs a daycare and is in full face of makeup & dressed (never in jeans) by the afternoon. Routine is key here. I think something simple, cute and casual would be nice fitting jeans (the darker the wash they 'nicer' they look!) a nice fitted T or vneck, cardigan (for easy changing if there are fingerprints!) or a cami & blouse you can wear over it. Even if you are in comfy 'workout' gear, wear your watch earrings & rings. Keep your accessories the same if thats easier for you. P.S. Today I wore skinny jeans, flats with jewels on them, sheer floral print blouse w/cami, hair pulled back in a messy styled bun & makeup...

I wear jeans and a shirt most of the time. When I go out I do a fast 5 minute hair and make up and switch to a clean shirt right before I leave the house (my 2 year old seems to think my shirt is a napkin lately!). I also have comfortable but nice looking shoes. It's so easy to get in a rut or just throw on the nearest clean clothes. But it is nice to have some better looking casual clothes too.

You are leaps and bounds ahead of me! These days, if I put on jeans and a t-shirt, my kids say "Where are you going today?"

I work full time from home. Since I am juggling working 8 hours a day with also carting 3 kids to and from school (1 is in Kindergarten too so I have 3 back-and-forth trips to the school daily), taking care of a toddler, cleaning the house, preparing all the meals, and trying to squeeze a workout in as well, I am afraid my standard uniform is yoga pants (with bleach stains, of course!) a workout tank top, and a ponytail. No makeup. Probably if I saw you at the store I would be feeling put to shame ;)

I didn't look at your previous answers but for me (a SAHM) I like to look good but be comfortable and practical at the same time. I wear a lot of velour sweat suits when I am running the kids around. Jeans and cute tops/sweaters. But...I always try to do my makeup or put some earrings on...it makes me feel "put together". I don't always do all the fancy stuff but a quick swipe of blush and some mascara, maybe some lip gloss, have a way of doing wonders for me! Its not what you wear on the outside that makes you feel good...its whats on the inside that counts!

What I wore today was...
Dark wash blue jeans, plain grey shirt, blue and grey fitted flannel, and grey converse. My hair was twisted up, bangs flat ironed, make-up done (foundation, eyebrows, eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, lipgloss).
On warm days I wear dark jean cuffed capri's, wedges or flip flops, and a cute tee, makeup done, etc. (I live in So cal so it's mostly warm).
I guess it depends on what your style is. I have always been a jeans and tee girl, you can totally dress that up a billion ways to suit you, so thats just what I do. When I don't have to leave the house I usually wear yoga pants and a tee. Im just the type of person to always do their makeup so thats always done, but sometimes I just put my hair up and leave it alone.
To be honest, your outfit sounded "sporty" cute.

I'll be honest. If I'm not going to leave the house all day, I often stay in my pajamas. I bet you can guess what I wore today ;)

When I go out, spring & winter & fall, I compensate for any frump/lack of new clothing/need to be comfortable, by wearing shoes that make me feel a little sassy (specifically my boots or *occasionally* a pair of leather pumps or booties (I have one pair of each)) and a coat (I have three that I have collected over the years) that is warm, functional but also that I feel is military/punk/menswear + soft elegance. At least that's the goal. I either wear dark skinny jeans/slim pants or trousers. Simple, dark and neutral colored tops and sweaters/cardigans/vests. I love scarves. My daily wear and favorite is silk/wool blend with cream and warm charcoal stripes. Tasty.

During summer all bets are off. I wear a swim suit, flip flops and what ever I find to wear that doesn't stink too badly.

EEK!!) Anyways, I dress for work EVERYDAY. I olnly change into my "comfy clothes" at the end of the day or if I am doing housework. Don't be too envoius of the moms all dressed up for work, I guarantee they wish they could come comfy like you!! The grass is always greener on the other side. I was a SAHM for 3 years and was comfy ALL the time and always wanted to dress up, now I look forward to the weekends when I dont have to dress up - but I have WW meetings early on Saturdays and church on Sundays...so really now it's just the holidays :). super comfy khakis and a patterned blue long sleeve shirt - for summer I went out and bought Vneck Tshirts, I don't know why, but just putting on a Vneck solid colored shirt makes me feel like I'm DRESSED, instead of going from jammies to jammies disguised as clothes :) I never wear sweats out of the house for the same reason - only jeans, khakis, or capris. If I know I'm going to be home all day just cleaning and playing with the kids, I'll just wear sweats and an old Tshirt.

I'm a SAHM. When my kids were little, I wore sweats and a t-shirt - there was no point in wearing nice things... As the kids got older, I moved to more presentable outfits. Yesterday I had a meeting at school. Until I left I had on fleece pants and a turtleneck. For the meeting I wore a long sleeved turtleneck sweater and a pair of nice slacks. I changed right before I left the house.
I think you can't compare your insides to the working mom's outsides. I'm sure they would much rather be in jeans and a sweater than their dress clothes and high heels.
Just because they look put together doesn't mean that they really are. Be yourself. Be comfortable.
Enjoy your kids - when it comes right down to it, they don't care what you wear.

I actually had a cute outfit on today. I am pregnant on top of being a SAHM. I am 4 months, so that weird pregnant or fat stage. I don't feel comfy in jeans right now so most days I end up wearing a matching sweat suit with my uggs. But today I had on black leggings and a striped shirt with some black boots. I had a doctor apt today and didn't want to wear sweats......again.... I also went and bought a few more shirts, so that I can wear a similar outfit/s more often. I felt like it was a perfect outfit because it was comfy and easy to move around in and yet cute and trendy.

Hi, J.:

What happened to women caring about the way they look?
A SAHM is just as professional and any woman going out in the work world.
Even women in colonial days looked good, even if they were over weight.

I say, again, what happened to women caring about the way they look?
Children are gifts, mom's are gifts as well. Does someone give you and gift that looks frumppy?

When I get dressed in the morning, that is pretty much what I stay in all day. If I put on sweat pants and a sweatshirt, it stays on all day and I will go everywhere in it. I guess I get dressed in the morning with the entire days activities planned and decide my attire based on that : )

I wear sweats a lot. I also wear jeans and a t-shirt a lot too. I do shower and put make-up on everyday - That makes me feel better about myself just to be "done." I've been wearing jeans, boots, and a nice sweater when I take the kids to lunch with my parents or friends the last few days (which is very unusal) & I've gotten a few compliments from random people. It has made me feel great about myself and made me want to dress nicer. HOWEVER....as soon as we get home my jammies/sweats go right back on. When I'm at home cleaning, going to drop the kids off, running to the Dr., etc...I want to be comfortable...I'm not looking for a date, but I think showering and having my hair & a little make-up on makes me feel good. :)

I wear skinny jeans all the time, fitted tees or sometimes more dressy tops (lace dolmans, tunics). I wear my black Jordan shoes most days. I try to do my hair but it's so tedious sometimes. I never go out the house without makeup but I think that's just habit now or that I love dream mousse foundation haha, but if I don't feel like putting make up on I just put mascara and eyeliner on.

Today I had my hair in a low side ponytail (behind my ear) with a black flower in it, rue 21 skinny jeans, black 3 buckle calf boots, a black fitted vneck with a white tank underneath that had sharks and hearts imprinted on it.

I really want to buy some sweats though... the only ones I have are my Marine Corps sweats from boot camp. If i had different colored sweats I'd probably wear sweatpants a lot. First I put on black sweatpants and a pink t-shirt because nothing else was clean.
Then, I did some laundry and put on my new jeans and a teal t-shirt to go to playgroup.
Then, this evening, I got baby poop on that outfit when I scooped up my one-year-old to give him kisses, so now I'm back in the black sweatpants and the pink t-shirt : )

Most of the time I wear what you described. I like to do yoga most days and hate to have to change out of my jeans to do that. I'm on the floor a lot changing diapers, picking up things, cleaning spills, etc. and jeans are just binding. Quick makeup most days - powder, blush, mascara, and blistex. Hair is usually in a ponytail/knot. Even if I do take the time to straighten it, I can't leave it down all day long. It drives me crazy.

If I...
Have outings (ie dr. apt.):
Jeans and a t-shirt. Little/no makeup. Hair in ponytail.

Have errands (ie. shopping, bank or other "drive through" places, friends house):
Sweats and a t-shirt. Little/no makeup. Hair in ponytail. Sneekers.

Am home all day:
PJ's/sweats and a t-shirt/night shirt (and usualy no bra or just a simple sports bra because who wants to fuss w/one when you are nursing?). I might put on a little make-up right before hubbie is due home from work. Hair in ponytail. Sneekers.

And...
For nice clothes/dressup places (ie. church, resturant):
Nice pants, or skirt w/nice shirt/sweater ect. Make-up if I have time. I might straighten my hair or put it up half-up-half-down style. I might wear heals and jewerly but I usualy don't if i have kidoes w/me.

:)

I have a 1 and 4 year old. I am wearing jeans, tshirt, and when I go out I wear tennis shoes. Hair is in a pony tail. I'm unpacking boxes and organizing (just moved), and washing both cars in between playing with the boys and cooking dinner. This evening I'll keep the jeans but put on a clean blouse, brush hair and put a little (VERY LITTLE) make up on and go to church. But this was how I dressed before being a mom too....can't blame the boys. :P

I work a few night a week, for a few hours. So I do get dressed up a few days a week and look nice. But if I have nothing to do on my off days. I never get out of jammies, and rarely do I brush my hair or put on make up....... I figure I'm home all day playing why not be comfortable :) Fun responces to read :)

sometimes i wear them with mini skirts, sometimes with yoga pants or jeans, somtimes shorts....

i love them, they make me feel "dressy" without putting any effort to it...

As shoes i wear flat sandals, i try to get pretty ones like michael kors or juicy things like that so i dont look so messy.....

i wear makeup like 2 times a week when i feel like wearing it....and my hair is always done, as well as nails...

almost no jewerly....little white gold earrings, sometimes i wear a tous necklace with a boy hubby gave for my first mothers day and my weeding ring....and a watch...i have tons of them from cartier to mickey mouse....ohhh and my ring...

but....if i could stay in jammies all day i would....

sadly on monday im going back to the gym so i will be wearing my gym outfits all day long....no time to change in the middle of the day

Today I'm wearing jeans, a patterned collared shirt, and brown suede boots. I agree that it's easy to down the path of frumpiness, and I feel so much better when I look good. I've actually bought a few inexpensive cotton dresses that look cute with my Frye boots, and tights or leggings and a cardigan. Those have been my staples recently. And they are cozy and flattering! (Btw, I have a 3 and a 5 year old.)

I've just accepted the fact that I am a SweatPants Mom. I am at the point where I don't need to look good for anyone during the day. I need to run around and have fun with my kids, do errands, clean the house and make dinner.

I'm the most comfortable in my sweatpants and frankly I was just done with stressing everyday with "what to wear", I rather my kids look good then me!
