Urine Backing up into Kidneys at 39 Weeks Pregnant: Hydronephrosis

I have been having pretty severe flank pain on both sides that radiates to the front under my ribcage for at least two weeks. Had a sonogram to rule out gallstones. Dr. Said it was hydronephrosis, caused by uterus getting big and impinging on the ureters which drain urine from kidneys to bladder. Ureters get kinked up and urine backs up into kidneys. He said it.was very common and said I could be induced on tuesdag if the pain is getting to be too much. Anybody else has this during pregnancy. Researched it and was concerned about risk of kidney damage, but I felt like my doctor didn't seem too concerned.

What can I do next?

Bless your heart! No knowledge of this but wanted to tell you it'd be okay. The Dr. would have induced labor immediately if it threatened you or the baby. God bless and try and get some rest....

I think I'd try spending some time either on my hands and knees or in the pool/bathtub to move/shift the babies weight long enough for the urine to flow down into your bladder....

That's pretty much what if feels like when you have kidney stones, as they get stuck in the ureters and block fluid. They hurt! I had 2 c-sections and have never been in labor, but I've been told kidney stones are worse. My point being, I feel your pain!

I agree with Elaine B. If the doctor was really concerned, your child would already be in your arms. Hang in there! But do be honest about your pain. Let your doctor know if you need to be done! At 39 weeks, there's no need to worry ... your baby should be good to go.

Good luck! And feel better soon :-)

My 2 yr has this all the time. She was born missing the valve to keep out the urine. She takes antibiotics daily. If she doesnt take them she can get UTIs, bladder infections and kidney infections.
I've never heard of it while pregnant, but i would think as long as you dont get any infections you will be ok. I'd get induced on Tuesday to make sure you get sick.
Cangratulations on the baby!

Kidney reflux? Yeah, it's a concern if it's chronic and goes untreated. It can cause some pretty horrible bladder infections, UTI's, and kidney infections. My eldest daughter gets kidney reflux and we know it's bad when there's blood in her urine.

You should talk to a urologist and get a second opinion, and have them talk to your OB and go from there working as a team in deciding what to do.

Never heard of it but makes sense. If it were me I guess I would just try to take more bathroom breaks to keep the urine low.

When I first read your post, I thought one more week or so to wait for the baby to come on it's own should be fine.
But then I Google'd hydronephrosis and after reading what trouble that can cause (your kidneys are inflamed and swollen), I've got to lean towards inducing labor sooner than later.
Pregnancy without complications is hard enough on the kidneys but hydronephrosis that goes for too long can cause kidney failure and you really don't want them so damaged that they fail.
