Unhealthy Attachment to My Yoga Pants... and I Don't Do Yoga...

Ok, so piggybacking on the 'fighting the frump' question...

I am getting WAY too comfortable in my yoga pants. In fact, my whole wardrobe (or at least the items in it that I typically choose to wear) are way too comfy, and straying farther and farther from what looks good... sigh.

I find myself wearing yoga pants and fitted t's or sweatshirts nearly anytime I'm not working, with the exception of if I'm doing something with the fiance or family - then it's jeans... how exciting, huh? But to run to Walmart? Definitely yoga pants. I am falling into the rut that I want to be comfortable and am totally sacrificing my dignity to do it! LOL

Truth be told, I've gained some weight over the last year (happy relationship weight, I guess), and as a result, lots of my clothes are more tight fitting than I want them. That accounts for part of the reason I am wearing my comfy clothes. They still fit. But I have bought a couple new pairs of jeans that DO fit, so that can't be my excuse entirely.

I am totally of the mindset that it is absolutely fine to have a day here and there where you don't get out of your jammies. In fact, I recommend it. But my day to day clothes are looking more and more like jammies, and that's not good!!

Can you ladies give my some ideas for dressing comfortably while looking reasonably presentable? I need some guidance and a big ole yank out of this rut I'm in. I swear, I used to be fashionable!!! LOL

Oh, one more thing... let's talk skinny jeans... Can a size 14 with thicker thighs pull them off? I'm not sure they're for my size/body type... I don't want to look ridiculous... I frequently remind myself that just because I can get it on DOES NOT mean I can pull it off!!! LOL

Thanks ladies!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

LOL Amanda...

Melinda, I already have the Dreamer Jeans from Old Navy. Had them in 12's, grew out of them, and now have them in 14's!! I also got some GREAT comfy, stretchy, basic boot cut jeans from Walmart - Faded Glory. Hard to believe, I know, but next to the Dreamer's from Old Navy, they are the best fitting jeans I've found, and believe me, on Stacey and Clinton's insistence (What Not To Wear - LOL), I've tried MANY!

I personally think that skinny jeans w/ boots look good on most frames. It's just important to note that skinny does NOT = skin tight! That seems to be a big misconception out there. You just need regular jeans that taper at the bottom to be able to get them into boots. And the boots should not be calf hugging heels, but looser on the calves and with a lower heel.
That's JMO, but THAT look, I think, flatters most. It's when you try to squeeze in to too small pants and tight boots that things don't look good - on anyone. And in that vein, skinny jeans on the bottom should be paired with a looser fitting top.

I'm also a big fan of leggings with a tunic or longer sweater. Again, with boots. Or a sweater dress. Very easy to throw on and go for the day.

To echo someone else, Old Navy has some great cute stuff out there right now (I LOVE their leggings, and they're $8).

Mostly just want to respond because the subject line was so funny/enticing.

I really do reserve the yoga pants for working out. My husband knows my wearing them is the signal to take over on the home front because I am either going running or an gonna pop in a dvd.

For me, the comfy weakness is PJs. I have dozens of PJs (not ugly ones either) and getting into them is sometimes the first thing I do when I get home. By the time the boys roll in, I am in my PJs making dinner or doing laundry. There is simply no reason to be doing house work or child care or reading or movie watching in non-comfy clothes! Sometimes my DH shakes his head and sighs and wonders when he will ever see me dressed again (I am often out the door in my "real" clothes before he wakes up). To which I say, "You wear stockings and heels and tailored suits all day and then we'll talk."

On to skinny jeans. I can wear a size 6 (not a size 6 from the junior section mind you) but feel happier in an 8. And at first, I felt completely self-conscious in skinny jeans. Since babies, as my husband has described it..."Your booty says "Pow"!" But I personally feel they just have an overall better fit and so I WILL wear them and do not care what my booty may or may not being saying to the general public.

How about some tights and an above knee lengths sweater/dress and maybe some cool boots with that. It looks cute and it's probably similarly comfy like yoga pants. It's also fashionable right now.

Honestly, you should start exercising. I hope that doesn't sound the wrong way. But I find that when I exercise, I feel better and want to look/dress better. And an added benefit, you'll loose weight and your old clothes will fit better. Just a thought.

Simple skirts and dresses are comfortable and be very flattering. There are soft fabrics and nicer styles that will fit you---you just need to go shopping.
I say this because you are obviously not psychologically comfortable, even though you are physically comfortable. Some people feel perfectly attractive in yoga clothes.
You just need to find clothes that work for you.

I wouldn't go with skinny jeans if you have thicker thighs (I am a size 8 but I carry most of my weight in my thighs and skinny jeans are uncomfortable) I would go with jeggings instead (yes there is a difference) try american eagle. their website carries plus sizes (you generally should go up one size epspecially if you have bigger thighs) and some of their jeggings are extra soft and stetchy. wear these with a tunic sweater and boots. tre chic lol!

Skinny jeans...I didn't think I'd like them, but they actually make me look and feel good...and I'm an average size gal. I found a pair at Kohl's (Apt. 9 brand), and always get compliments when I wear them.

I can't wait to see your suggestions. I am the same way (wearing them right now!!) My husband made the mistake the other day of mentioning two pairs that he thinks makes my butt look extra hot! Please believe I will be wearing them often! LOL

I'm way too far in this rut too. I just got some new yoga pants and sweats since the inner thigh seems of mine were literally worn out from ALWAYS wearing them at home. But honestly, I still make myself put on real cloths to go out. It only takes a minute to swap jeans for yoga pants to go out and vice versa when you get back in. Sometimes I wear them out if I'm really coming from the gym-with sweatshirt tied to hide the butt because I feel like I'm out in my jammies, and I don't feel proud when I do that. You're feeling uneasy for a reason! Dont' go out in your yoga pants unless you're going to yoga! :)
I think they're allowed at home, jeans are fine most of the time out, and dress up now and then for your man even for just plain errands. Sometimes I put on a good outfit just to run to the store, and suddenly my husband wants to come along.
skinny jeans at 14 can be done with longer tops. I'm a 10 and will wear them to tuck into boots with tunic length top, but feel too large in them with short top since the narrow calf proportion can ONLY serve to accentuate the more lady like thighs up top! It's about the entire outfit. Also, I see larger ladies in them and think they look really good with certain boots/shoes (not flats-you need some volume at the bottom for balance unless you're a twig) and confidence, but we all feel differently about what we ourselves can wear. Men love curves. I have less nerve. I actually think I shouldn't be wearing skinny jeans, but they are the only kind I can tuck into tall boots. I cant wear slimming wider legs every day.....I love tall boots.

Ok I don't have any advice but I had to laugh at your title. I wore yoga pants yesterday while I dropped my daughter off at mother's day out. 1/2 the moms there seem to wear yoga pants, while the other half dresses to the nines. I'm more in the comfy clothes group myself.

Good luck!

hi
I've had this problem previously. I got way tooooooooo comfy in stretchy clothing.. then one day, I said enough is enough.. Thing is, when you wear that stretch clothing, you aren't as apt to pay attention to weight gain, esp since the fabric "grows" with you :) I put resort to wearing jeans. Dark wash looks a little more dressy.. many do have some stretch to them so it's not the before when you felt all confined when wearing jeans. Old Navy has some dark washed jeans.. and the ones called, Dreamer.. seem to have more room in the hip and waist.. Skinny Jeans. I think that depends on the body type... some can pull off that style no matter how big or small (I say small) because NOT all skinny women look good in them..
However, you might want to try a semi boot cut, or I am told a slight NOT huge, but slight bell bottom is back in .. of course, height plays a role too... I am about 5'3 and not fat, but not skin and bone.. so skinny jeans don't do me justice, mostly because I look sooooooooooooo much shorter in them..
however, a slight boot cut or even boy's cut look ok..
you can always had a cute t-shirt and sweater.. and some flat shoes..
I would def stop wearing yoga pants or too much stretch clothing. Old Navy has some good starter pants in the sense that they arent pricey. as you ease back into non stretch clothing.. you neednt do it at a big price point..

I don't get what is so bad about yoga pants... if you dress right, they can look nice, not dressy or anything, but still nice.

You would LOVE pajama jeans. It's a dark wash jean lined with sweat pants-like material. Especially with the winter coming... They are cut in a very stylish fashion. I had an XL pair when I was a size 14 and they looked GREAT! Unfortunately, when I lost some weight and ordered the large, the legs were too tight. (but my thighs are my problem area). At first I had a bit of a love-hate relationship with the fabric. It looked like jeans, but felt different... and in certain lights you could tell something was 'off.' But- those were THE most comfortable jeans ever... I gave my new pair to my Mom and am so jealous every time she wears them. Ha ha.

You can get these at pajamagrams.com.

By the way, I'm in the same boat with skinny jeans... I REFUSE to wear them because my thighs are my problem area... I look like He-man in them... and it makes my thighs look bigger when my calf area looks smaller. I had to order some wide-leg jeans off of e-bay (based on measurements) and had some good luck. Also- New York and Company has some FABULOUS wide-leg knit work pants right now on sale for about 23 bucks. They will feel like yoga pants, but look like fancy work pants. (they pull on... no zipper or button, etc..)
