Do Your Kids Complain About Clothes?

My girls seem so picky about pants, it drives me nuts!! They find something to complain about with nearly every pair of jeans they own which are every brand from H&M to Old Navy to Target. These ones are itchy, these feel weird, these are too loose, these are too tight (mind you they are the correct size and do not seem too tight or loose to me), these ones give me a wedgie and the list goes on and on. Now thankfully we are in CA and shorts are worn 7 out of 9 school months but these last few cold weeks are grating on my last nerve!! The only pants they don't complain about are yoga pants or leggings. I know those are much comfier than jeans but I feel like my kids look like bums if I send them to school in cotton pants everyday. I guess I shouldn't care but they have so many cute jeans and I want them to wear them! Does anyone else have a kid like this and if so, have you found any jeans that they will wear without complaining??

What can I do next?

I would buy yoga pants, then. Some people just don't like jeans. Friend's one twin wears leggings daily with tunic tops or skirts. You didn't say how old the kids are, but I would try to find a compromise. I personally feel that if my DD is clean and her clothes are not stained or torn and she's not pulling out wedgies all day, then that is better than wearing something cute but being miserable. Right now we are having sock issues. So she wears mixed up socks. I don't care. Whatever gets on her feet at 8AM in 23F weather. If you don't want to reinvest in a lot of new pants, look for sales online or in thrift stores. You can also donate or sell the jeans they don't wear.

As they've grown, my kids have gotten much better about clothing. There's hope! Hang in there!

Like you, I really dislike the whole idea of yoga pants as "real clothes." Until recently, it was extremely rare that I would let the girls out of the house in yoga pants and leggings required either a skirt or tunic-style top. i just think they're sloppy.

My three year old has got it in his head that he needs to wear black long sleeved shirts topped with a yellow short sleeved shirt. Why? because I made the "mistake" once of telling him he looked beautiful that way. This too shall pass.

As for the pants/ jeans, we have a handful of pairs. He would love to wear them. They are a bit challenging for him to work the buttons and zip as yet.

Best,

My daughters hated jeans too. Look, they may be "cute" but if you were spending your days running, climbing, spinning, jumping and playing would YOU want to be in jeans, or soft cozy stretch pants?
It's California, probably the yoga pants capital of the US, they aren't going to look like bums. It's not like they are going to school in pj pants.
Let them be comfortable and flexible, and stop wasting your money on clothes they don't want to wear. It's not a battle worth having!!!

The only issue I have is that my 2nd son likes shorts all year round. We are the snowiest city in the nation this year and yet he still wears shorts to school. It's been below freezing for weeks, still with the shorts. geez.

Didn't your girls try on the pants first? If not, try that. If they did, and then complained later (maybe due to friend-type influences), then I would make them suck it up and wear what you already bought. But I have no issues with yoga pants, my daughter wears them all the time, I never considered someone would think I dressed my kids like bums. Not that I'd care.

Absolutely! I gave up and am fine with nice yoga pants or leggings under a skirt/dress/long top. I don't think they look messy at all. Children's Place has good yoga pants and fleece pants. I only buy clothes they have tried on really well and swear are comfortable or it's all wasted. They finally got jeans from Old Navy they seem good with. Boot leg ones. And honestly, my oldest will wear fleece pants that are a bit too short and I'll point that out but she doesn't care so I say - great. Soon enough all she'll care about it looking a certain way so if she doesn't now, who really cares. I guess our school isn't really fashion conscious.... But my kids always look neat and reasonably good.

My oldest - at 14 - has just now found some pants that fit ok. But he only wears them very rarely. He is usually in sports pants or shorts (yes - even in 30 degree weather !) My youngest wears only sports pants & shorts as he hasn't found any jeans that fit comfortably. I wouldn't know where to tell you where to go for girls.

My girls, 9 and 7, refuse to wear jeans. Here are there some things that don't make them look like bums: legging with a skirt on top, jegging (looks like jeans but soft cotton material), yoga pants with a tunic, leggings with a tunic, cargo pants. I gave up trying to make them wear something since they were three. Pick your battles.

My son is 9 and still will not wear jeans. He thinks they are uncomfortable. Just get them softer pants like corduroy and cargo pants. Fleece pants. Track pants. You can find pants with a soft elastic waist without a button. That is what I have to do for my son. My daughter seems to think all clothes are just fine…she is not as sensitive.

Neither of my kids wear sweaters or sweatshirts. Sweatpants only if they are a 100% cotton. They like jeans if they fit comfortably. I don't buy any new style or brand without having them at the store trying it on, which is a pain in the butt, so once we find a 'good' brand/style, I buy only that.

One of my friends kids will not wear jeans or any pants with a button or snap. Mostly, he wears elastic waist sports pants.

the ONLY pants they wear without complaing are the Levi's skinny jeans from Khol's.
Every other brand is just like you said "TOO (whatever/ itchy/ loose/ tight/ wrong COLOR!!)" its enough to make you want to pull your hair out

Jeans are terribly uncomfortable. Think about YOU climbing on the monkey bars in jeans. Would your legs really be able to bend enough to move up to the next bar?

Would you enjoy wearing jeans all day when you'd like to go to the gym and run after a ball but jeans don't stretch with you so you just sit there?

Jeans are some of the less comfortable clothes that a kid can own.

Let them wear cute matching outfits. I get the girls several at Walmart each season. The pants are knit and the tops are often very cute.

My 7 year old won't wear jeans. She wears leggins in different colors every day. And she in no way looks like a bum. Leggins with a cute top is fine for school. Why sit in class all day and be uncomfortable?

My almost 5 year old is like this too, hates jeans. The only kind I have found she will wear and not complain about is Old Navy. They are a very soft denim, and have the adjustable waistband. I accidently bought a pair that were sortof skinny jeans from there recently though and she rejected those, too tight! I have to admit I don't like wearing jeans either, they just aren't that comfy. I do wear them when I leave the house, but as soon as I get home it's off with the jeans and on with the sweats or yoga pants!

How old are they? Mine are 8. One of them hates jeans because they are too rough for her but I found some denim Jeggings at Kohls that are really soft. They are by SO and she really likes them. They have the adjustable waist, too.

Some kids have sensory issues. Chickpea hated the uniform socks and tights she wore starting in preschool. The seams irritated her skin. She's outgrown it, but not before I started sprouting gray hair.

Maybe jeggings are a good compromise for your kids.

If Chickpea attended public school, she'd be in leggings/yoga pants everyday like most of the elementary school girls in our neighborhood. I'd buy 5 bottoms and 5 tops from Hanna Anderson in the fall and maybe a few cute sweaters. No fuss, no muss.

This is why I love that she wears a uniform.

My 11 yr old daughter is very picky too. She will try a pair on, tell me she likes them, promises she'll wear them, then decide later that she doesn't like something about them. I'm practically at wits end with this situation.

Hanna Andersson has comfy pants for kids that aren't full-on yoga pants, if you want to look there.

I don't know what your girls' ages are, but why are you buying them jeans if they don't wear them?

My son isn't overly picky. If the waist is too tight, he'll tell me. The Children's Place twill cargo pants are great, we have a few softer-type (fleece, thick cotton ) pants and I've put him in jeans with long-johns underneath the past few days. We have had high winds and blowing snow. I don't really care what he wears so long as it's appropriate for whatever we are doing and the weather...

it might just be a kids/comfort/sensory/activity thing. When I was little I HATED jeans. I refused to wear them. There was no such thing as yoga pants. Leggings I wore. My kids dont really like jeans now. For kids I think they are restrictive. Plus its not like I play nation ball or tunnel tag in my jeans these days. I am sure if I tried I would hate them again. Plus were in CA where laid back breezy cotton pants are accepted! and the norm. They are fine. Let them be comfortable.

My kids rarely complain about clothes.
They have their own preferences, likes/dislikes, and it is fine.
I hardly ever hear them complain about clothes or their clothes.
They like their clothes and are comfy in it.
They dress themselves.
I don't buy what they don't like or will not wear.
I buy what I know they like and will, wear.

Have you considered putting a dress or skirt over the leggings?

Jeans are not comfortable compared to leggings. Or tights under the jeans (it depends on how cold it is and how the jeans fit).

Neither of my kids complain about Gymboree jeans.

My nieces and nephews I raised could care less about clothes but my son refuses to wear turtle necks. He looks so good in turtle necks though. Oh well. I had to get over that and move on. You may want to take them shopping separately and have them try on different jeans. I would even go as far as having another relative take them with your money of course.

You don't say how old they are but eventually as they grow up their are other pants available beyond jeans, sweat pants and yoga pants.

Good luck but this doesn't need to be a fight you need to fight.

My son, who is in grade three, would not wear jeans. He would only wear elastic waist pants like sweat pants, rugby pants or cargo pants. He only recently decided he wanted to wear jeans so he would look cool. My older son, who is in grade six, would not wear anything with an elastic waist.

Yes. My first grade son wears basically pants that look like pjs everyday. Fleece, sweat pants, or athletic pants. He matches and his cloths fit(right length) and are clean so I don't really care. He wears nicer pants(jeans) to church on Sunday. My youngest is super annoying when it comes to socks and shoes. Granted she is only two but man its draining trying to get ready in the morning and "these socks bother me" or "I've been wearing them for a long time". I buy any kind of socks she might like.
