Hi there moms!

My daughter, a freshman at the community college, is currently struggling in intermediate algebra. I would like to get a tutor for her. Can anyone of you wonderful ladies recommend any? We are in the San Francisco Bay Area. To be specific, we live in San Carlos, CA

Thank you so much!!! :-)

Has your daughter used the tutoring center at her school? Most CC's have them and they are very successful, especially in math. It is mostly a peer tutoring model and usually tutoring is free.
One more thing I would like to mention, if she has not done so yet, she should make use of her instructor's office hours. Most instructors WANT to help their students succeed and will go out of their way for a student who shows a genuine interest in getting a handle on the subject matter. The instructor may help by showing alternative ways to get solutions, giving practice exams or additional practice problems that address specific weaknesses the student needs to work on. They may also suggest a tutor (most likely a former student).
Good luck.

Hello L.,
My son attends sthe Math Lab, @ Chabot Jr.College and they have math tutors there. My husband was a math teacher and he would suggest to his students to find an outstanding High Schol Honors math student to help, or hire a High School math teacher( they are generally in need of extra income). I wish you and your daughter luck.

Hi L.,

I live in Redwood City and went back to school a few years ago. I've always been horrible at math. What really helped me was getting a study group together. It seemed that what I didn't understand, somebody else did and could explain it to me.In a sense we sort of tutored eachother. I ended up getting an A. That would be my first recommendation (its the cheapest too).

There are also different "community boards" located around the school. I always saw notes about people who tudor for a little extra cash.
She could also turn to the teacher (if she hasn't done so already) and ask for some advice/help.

My daughter is in the 7th grade at Central Middle School. My friend is in intermediate math at Canada. They're doing some of the same stuff!

Good Luck!
N.

Dear L.,

I saw your question and thought my son might be able to help you out if you have not already found a tutor. He is a Junior in high school, but he is very advanced at math and is currently taking Calculus. He helps other friends at school with their algebra, so he might be able to help your daughter. He is friendly and easy to talk to. If you want to talk to him, just email me back and I'll give you contact info. We live in Redwood City.

Regards,
L.

Where exactly is San Carlos? I know of an excellent tutor who charges $40 an hour though and she lives in Irvine, CA.
