Hello everyone,
I am a Mom of two children. My youngest child, whom is 8 years old is struggling in Math. I began to see this problem around the 4th six weeks of the last school year. I tried tutoring her myself when I noticed the problem and this past summer. For some reason, I just can not connect with her in regards to showing her "new" ways to find the answers to problems. It's like a totally confuse her. Can you help me locate a local tutor in the area whom maybe can relate to her better than I can. She is in the 3rd grade and will be taking the Taks test this year. And I know she can do better than what she is doing at the present time. Thanks!
Thanks for everyone's responses. I enrolled my daughter into tutoring, suggested by one of our Mamasource readers. My daughter started off with a "D" average in math and I'm pleased to announce that she now has a "B" average. She is still enrolled in tutoring and is shooting for an "A". Thanks Mamasource readers for your advice. If anyone needs the name and number of the tutor, please let me know.

Hi,
I'm located in GP and am currently staying home with my little one. Before I had him I taught a few different grade levels in GPISD, including 3rd grade. I have prepared my students for TAKS, so I am familiar with the types of problems they are dealing with and the way they need to approach each. You are more than welcome to PM me if you don't find anything!
You might try music lessons. I taught my daughter to play the piano about that age when she was struggling with math at the suggestion of her math teacher at school. Half notes, whole notes, eighth and sixteenth notes, 3/4 time, it's a lot more math than you would think, and it's fun. She's a science major in her senior year at Texas State now.
Contact her school. They should have a list of tutors........
Hi E.. I am looking for some students for private tutoring in my home or yours. My rate is $20/hour in my home or $30/hour in your home. I live in S. Arlington/Kennedale, near 287 & Sublett Rd. One other mom on Mamasource uses my services for her daughter who is in 5th grade. If you'd like her name & phone number I'll send it to you. I am a SAHM with 4 kids, 3 in school and 1 infant. I am an experienced, certified math teacher for grades 7-12 but I have tutored kids in grade 3 up to College algebra. I have worked in public and private schools and I also worked at Sylvan Learning Center. If you are interested just respond to me here on Mamasource. THanks!
Hello E.,
I am not sure if you have gotten a respond to your question, but here it goes. I am a Middle School Counselor in Grand Prairie. My suggestion is to go to the child's school and ask about a before school, after school or during school program that will help your child in the area of math. You may also ask teachers if they are willing to do some extra tutoring or know of someone that would tutor your child on weekends or after school. There are also a lot of free computer programs for students and parents to utilize at home. I hope this helps.
Depending on where you are looking for a tutor, I live in the Fort Worth city limits near Haltom City. Please email me at ____@____.com.
53 years old - love children - may be able to help your child!

If one of the people recommended or people offering to help in the other mesages doesn't work out for you, another option is Mathnasium on Park Row in Arlington. My daughter gets help there now and then, and it's really made a difference for her. In the future, I may try one of the people mentioned here, though, just to avoid the drive into central Arlington.
I am in the Grand Prairie/ South Arlington area and would consider tutoring your child (we would have to work out the details). If I were to tutor I would like your written permission given to me and to your child's teacher for me to speak on the phone or meet with the teacher (would be happy to meet with the teacher with you present if you'd like) so that I can see what they are working on, will be working on, and exactly what your child seems to be struggling with.
I worked as a teacher in Birdville ISD for 8 years before having my daughter in 2007 and have stayed home with her since. In Birdville I was a resource teacher for 5 years and a life skills/ resource teacher for 3 years. During that time I also took a part time position at Sylvan learning center for 1 year. I would like you to contact my former pricipal to verify that information and my qualifications if you are interested in having me work with your child. Currently my teaching materials are in storage and I am unable to get to them so at this time I would rely on what your child has through school and materials I make myself. Let me know.

I am a high school math teacher, though I stay at home with my son presently. I do not have a tutoring business, but I could perhaps meet with you and your daughter to see if I could help. I love coming up with fun ways to get the point across in math. I'm sure you are doing a good job, but sometimes the ears turn off when it's coming from mom. PM me if you'd like to chat. :)
Hi E., I do not know of a math tutor, but a website that has helped my daughter is www.funbrain.com . They have several math games on there.
Hope that helps, good luck!
E.,
Most school districts have a list of tutors or you can get one from your school. Usually the tutors are teachers at other schools. In addition, Knowledge Guides on Green Oaks near the intersection of Green Oaks and Little has tutoring, although they are quite expensive ($40 per hour for private tutoring). You might try to locate a college student at UTA. They have a job service you could use to locate someone. With math at the elementary school level there should be quite a few students able to help. We used tutors in math from UTA a few years ago and they worked out quite well. Finally, there is free after school tutoring available at Hope tutoring centers, usually located in local churches. If you can't find one of them, message me privately and I'll get more information for you.
Good luck.
Hi E.,
We live in Mansfield. My husband is a teacher in Arlington and tutors in the evenings. He will come to your house or a library, whichever you are more comfortable with. If you are interested or want more information, you can email him at ____@____.com that helps!
Hello, Try finding a junior high or high school student. Look for someone in AP or higher level classes, perhaps an older sister of one of her friends. We had great success with this during the summer - we found one of the best but we are in Arlington - I can give you her name and number (I'll check with her Mom) but if that helps she's a great girl. They relate on the same level and have been through those same classes.....hope this helps. Let me know if this is the route you want to take.
