I am fairly new to cloth diapering. I am going to be traveling soon (just me and the two kids). This includes a 2-2 1/2 hour plane trip followed by 2 hours traveling by car. I am wondering if any of you vetran cloth diapering mamas have some helpful hints and tricks. Right now the trip feels pretty overwelming. I have made the trip before cloth diapers and it was exhausting! Thanks for your help.

What can I do next?

I use cloth diaper too, but when traveling I switch back to disposables for convenience. Unless I'm at my mom's where i know I can wash easily. Good luck! S.

I too cloth diaper. If it seems overwhelming, just use sposies (disposables) :). I use 7th generation when I have to use disposables, as they are un-bleached and better for baby. Good luck!

i used only cloth diapers with my two kids. but when we traveled far like you are i bought a few disposables if i could. but my babies usually got awful rashes if i didnt change them often so most of the time i carried zip lock bags with me i put in a dryer sheet in each one so that it wouldnt be so stinky when i opened them up and rihsed them as much as possible before i put them in the bag . make sure you wash them as soon as you can when you get to where you are going. the good thing about traveling was that i only took a dozen diapers becaue i knew i had to wash them . i usually did it after dinner so they would be ready for the next day.

You mentioned your feeling overwhelmed already. My advice to you DONT use cloth. It's not worth the hassle.Your car & clothing will smell.
I used cloth on one of my four kids and my husband and I will look back on those days and laugh that we put ourselves through the misery!

Save your sanity and use disposables. You can buy eco disposables if it makes you feel better. travel is overwhelming with kids...not made better by current dropping airline service standards!

i did a weekend trip away from home with a 6 hour car ride to and from our destination with cloth. our baby is the same age as yours. i brought my large wetbag to keep where we were staying and a smaller one for the diaper bag. if you get scented baking soda that will help cut down on any smells. i make my own but you can get some from here: http://hyenacart.com/diaperdust/index.php?c=0&p=54970

because our trip was short i didn't have to do laundry until we got home. if you won't be returning home soon enough, make sure you have a place to do laundry or go with disposables. we used those for another trip we did and it was a good reminder for why we use cloth instead!

My child is now 37 but she was alergic to plastic diapers. She could tolerate one or maybe two in a row but no more than that. My solution was "save" the time when I would use those one or two disposable diapers. Just before a long event or trip I would put a disposable on her just before we left the house (the last five minutes before). Then when I was away from home for five or six hours, I would dispose of this one diaper and then put on a cloth diaper. This way I was lugging around the extra weight and smell for part of the trip -- not the whole trip.

Is there any reason you can't use disposable just for the journey? I know how stressful & exhausting traveling with little ones can be. Good Luck!

I totally applaud your use of cloth diapers, however, you can pack those for when you reach your destination and give yourself a break while you are traveling and bring disposables while en route. Anything that will keep you from being any more overwhelmed will be a big help.

I used cloth diapers for all three of my kids. When I traveled I would use disposable. It was just much more convenient. Unless there is a reason why you need to use only cloth diapers. I suggest you use disposable for the trip.

If you had a wool bag to put the wet diaper in. The wool wicks the moisture away. I do have to say that for myself I wouldn't want to be traveling for that long with a bag of wet diapers myself. I just used throw away ones while on long trips.

If it is just you alone with a baby and a toddler I would suggest you just get some disposables for the trip. You will have enough to carry without adding dirty, wet, stinky diapers to your load. Give yourself a break.

I have a good friend who uses cloth diapers, but uses disposables while traveling. It just makes things much easier on her and the baby. You can easily switch back to cloth once you get to your destination.

I use cloth diapers at home but definitely don't want to worry about the hassle of cleaning them while out of town. I have been using disposables while on vacation (using them now actually). It is terrible - my son has blow outs practically every time in these things. I think I'm doing more laundry with his clothes than I would with his diapers! :) Seriously though - much easier with the disposables and it definitely makes me appreciate our decision to use "no blow-out" cloth diapers!

We are a cloth family also! I have traveled with cloth before and it can be done but it is a bit of work. I take gallon bags and my zip bag and i make sure i put the diapers in the gallon zip locks first just to avoid the stinkies.
Since I travel more on my own with the little ones I tend to move towards a small pack of disposables for the travel days only! This way I can just toss and run. 7th generation has a good disposable. I just make sure to change them often since my kids are used to fuzzi bunz and bum genius diapers.
Great luck on your trip!

A good compromise I've often done is to use disposables during the actual plane/car trip and then use cloth while at the destination. But you are making a huge difference using cloth on a regular basis. Using sposies for your trip won't negate all the good you've done, so don't beat yourself up over it if you opt to do that!
