Totally disappointed...can't Take It back..WWYD?

We have been in need of more silverware...so I bought a set of Oneida this past weekend as it was CLOSE to the set we already have....got it home and opened it up and it's CHEAP - and I've NEVER had Oneida be CHEAP...

I called the store and unfortunately, because it's opened, they won't take it back..urgh...

So donate or trash it? It was a 12 place setting - with tea spoons (the long ones)...but I swear - when we use them - I think they will bend or break...

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

It's sooo poorly made - soooo unlike Oneida that I would NOT want to sell it on ebay or craigslist.

I typically do not donate things that are in bad condition...I think my best bet will be to contact Oneida and tell them how bad it is. Seriously - my kids thought it was "fake plastic" like I get for the block parties - that's how THIN it is...

I could use it in the emergency kit...

thanks ladies!!!

Send me the spoons! Just kidding! :) I think all my spoons are at the bottom of the sandbox. *sigh*

I second the advice to call Oneida. They have some 'splaining to do.

I would contact Oneida directly.

Their policy and the store's policy may be two completely different things.

Good luck!

Why would you trash them when you could donate them?

Oneida makes a whole RANGE of FLATWARE. From really CHEAP to several HUNDRED dollars per set. I'm assuming this was low-end, and, unfortunately, these days, you get what you pay for. Oneida closed their last US plant in 05 and has been manufacturing overseas.....

I'd call Oneida and explain that you believe they are defective but the store in which you bought them won't allow you to return them. They may allow you to ship them directly to them and issue you a refund.

I don't know if your kids "play cook" or eat... but you could give it to them to play with... or if there is a little girl niece, friend's kid, that you know?

I am sure there is a place for it. if you know any high-schoolers that are starting off in college they might like it? College kids are notorious for being under prepared with the "basics" and free silverware is something I would have JUMPED all over, even if it was crappy! Or, take it out of the box and donate it to a thrift store... I bet someone will buy it just because they need reusable silverware, any silverware. One person's trash is another one's treasure! who knows, maybe an artist will by it and turn it into jewelry or picture frames.

REALLY? Throwing them away?

I have silver ware that does not match....I am talking I have had my mom...mil and step mil hand me down stuff....I have altogether like seven different sets.

Why would you even think to toss that stuff..Art welders will take used silver ware...I am sure if you stick them on Ebay or CL you could make some of your money back.

Seriously Do not toss them.

I would contact Oneida. Maybe it is a fluke that got through the inspection line.

Onedia is typically not cheapened like that.

They just might replace it, you never know.

If not, I'd probably give it to Goodwill or something if I knew I would never use it.

Call or write to Oneida and tell them what happened. Like, exactly what you wrote word for word in your post and tell them that you've considered donating it or trashing it and wouldn't even consider RESELLING it because it's so cheap looking and trashy that you'd be embarrassed to sell it.

I can guarantee you'll get a response from them. Especially if you make sure they know that you're a loyal consumer of their products.

It's strange that you can't return it once it's opened. I definitely would not trash it. If I didn't save it or re-purpose it for something, I'd definitely donate it. If it was really in as bad shape as you say, I might even call Oneida and complain. They could replace it.

Call or email Oneida. You may be surprised what they will do for you. I have been shocked, in a good way, by a few companies. If nothing can be done, I'd use it until it fell apart. Seems wasteful to toss it.

I would donate them to a local soup kitchen. Or to a veterans organization (like the DAV) that often run thrift stores in your local area that use their profit to support various local veteran's programs.

That store sucks. You should be able to return anything of poor quality, opened or not. Maybe you could contact Oneida and tell them you want your money back for the crappy silverware they made. Or take it to Target and get in store credit toward another set.

We have some cheap silverware, but I don't get rid of it.
I make sure it's what my husband takes to the office if he needs some real forks/spoons over the plastic stuff and THAT way he's not taking my nice silverware.
If he loses or destroys the cheap stuff - who cares?

Go to the store's web site and contact customer service. Tell them you are going to place a warning on your facebook wall telling everyone how inferior their merchandise is. And that you attempted to return the merchandise for a refund and the store (name the store and location) refused to return it and give you a refund. Companies do not like negative comments, they will probably tell you to take it back for a refund. If you do this by email then you will have something to print off and take to the store. Ask to speak to the manager--if they say no, ask again, if they say no GET LOUD I want to speak to the STORE MANAGER NOW . If there is any sort of warrenty on the silverware point that out to them.

I did this at Walmart several years ago and got what I wanted. I had purchased something with a lifetime warrenty and it didn't hold up, so I took it back. They refused to return it and I got loud and stopped being polite--every time they said no I got louder--soon the store manager showed up and said just give her a new one and get her out of here.
And now I refuse to shop at Walmart. My money will not go to support a company that does not treasure me as a customer.

You called Oneida. But what store did you buy it at? Surely you can return it at that store. I'd physically take it there and show it to them. That is lame that they are making things cheaper. It seems to be the case for a lot of companies now a days. It's all about making more money.

I'm sure many poor people would love the cutlery even if it is not up to your quality standards. There are people out there using spoons with rust and cracks in them b/c they can afford nothing better.

does your receipt say that you can't return it once it's opened? That doesn't sound right. I'd go to the store and speak to a manager.
