I'd go with a toaster for toast. The ones these days have great settings, and your four-year-old can put the toast in and wait for it to pop up again.
After spending the last 5 years burning our toast in our current toaster oven, I have had enough. I need recommendations fora toaster oven that doesn't' burn toast? Ideally it is constructed to not get super hot on the outside too, since I am sure my 4 year old is going to try to make her own toast one of these days, and I would hate for her to get badly burnt.
Being super compact would be an added bonus! We have a small kitchen, otherwise I would just use our toaster that is in storage.

We use a toaster for toast. Mine is small, classic stainless steel type.
We use the toaster oven for warming things up, baking small dishes, etc. I have a Kitchen Aid and LOVE it. I've never made toast in the toaster oven though!
I tried the regular toaster as folks mentioned below, but it did not work out. I found that I used my toaster oven to melt cheese sandwiches etc. which I now had no easy way to cook (microwave made the toast soggy).
Black and Decker makes nice space saver one, and I have never had any problems with thier toaster ovens. Mine current one is about 14 years old.
Only thing I would keep in mind, is how many slices you want to toast in it... today's bread slices are rather large.
@TF Plano/Allen - Jealous that your kitchen has enough counter space to have both!! :)
We, too just use a regular toaster. I believe mine is a GE & for as inexpensive as it is (I think I paid $20 at Walmart), it's stainless steel, has settings from very light to very dark & a special "Bagel button" so when you're toasting bagels, as long as you put it in the right way, it'll only toast the cut side & not the outside.
Hi,
We recently bought the Hamilton Beach Toastation toaster and mini oven combo, and so far it has worked great for us. It is very compact, so the mini oven part of it is on the small side. It toasts my English muffins perfectly. Amazon sells it: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000A1FFZE/ref=oh_detail....
