Teething? - Dayton, OH

My 5 and a half month old daughter has been fussier than usual. I felt her gums to check if she is teething. I could feel a bump towards the left side of her upper gum. Does this mean she is teething? I thought the middle upper teeth always showed up first.

What can I do next?

Hi Nidhi! She could most certainly be teething! She may start drooling more than usual, getting a clear, runny nose, and possibly even a bit of redness on her bottom. We are experiencing a lot of that right now, so I will give my daughter some Motrin here and there, a frozen teething ring or wash cloth, I've used teething tablets, even pretzel rods to chew on. One thing that she loves to chew on is the dropper on the top of the empty Tylenol bottle. It give her the whole empty bottle, and she chews like crazy on the rubber dropper! That's honestly one of her favorites!! Good luck!

My daughter is a year and the only tooth she has is her upper left fang! She is getting one in the bottom center, but it is completely in yet. It looks funny when she laughs. Anyway, we use the Hyland's teething tabs. They dissolve in their mouth and it is so much easier than oragel. Plus, they taste isn't bad so my daughter opens her mouth when she sees what I have.

Usually the middle bottom teeth come in first. However, there is no rule as to how teeth have to come in. The pattern that you are referring to is just the most seen. My daughter cut hers totally different and there was nothing wrong with it. Teeth are one of those thing you just really have NO control over. It could be that the tooth is coming down from the jaw bone, but not ready to break through the skin. Both experiences are painful and tend to make baby very grouchy. Try to give her something cold to suck on. Frozen fruit, ice cube, frozen washrag, teething rings are all great things to use. If it calms her fussiness, you may want to give her some Orajel and some Tylenol.

Both of my sons got their two lower front teeth first. My oldest began cutting teeth at 2 1/2 mo. It sounds like your baby is cutting a tooth. Good luck!

Usually the bottoms centers come in first but each kid is different. If her gums are swollen and you can see her teeth in them (her gums will look kind of white) than she is probably teething. My kids always teethed in stages. They would teeth for a while and then stop and then go and then stop. Eventually, the tooth would cut. Remember that each kid is different and there is no right or wrong way for teeth to grow in. Just trust your instincts and try to make her comfortable in the process. Sounds like you are doing a great job! Good luck and God bless!

Usually it is the bottom two middle teeth with the upper two follwing sometimes quickly after. However I don't know that they have to come in that way!!! My three have started with that pattern but after that it has been a free for all!!! I don't think any of them have followed the same pattern.

Keep watching, you can try using tylenol or motrin to help soothe her. Sometimes they like cool things to chew on, I personally have never used ambesol or any other kind of teething gel's but they couldn't hurt.

Good luck with everything!

Hello Nidhi,

For the most part the bottom front are always the first to appear, and it does sound like your little one is teething. Every now and then you have a baby that cuts other teeth first. I have raised 4 of my own, my third is a senior this year (Yayy!). She cut her her fangs first lol. I mean she cut all four, top and bottom all at once. She looked like a little vampire lol. My other three cut the bottom middle two first. Just give your little one a cold or frozen teether and use orajel. My oldest daughter has a 4 1/2 month old who is cutting teeth right now. One bottom center has come through already and the one next to it is on its way. It's swollen too. Good luck, as they can get pretty grumpy with this happening. Use lots of bibs too, they drool like mad lol.

Teeth are a funny thing....with both my daughters, they came in quite differently. It could be it's just working it's way up but may not "poke through" for a while. It might be worthwhile the next time she's fussing to give her a dose of tylenol and if she quits fussing, you'll know that's it.

You could also use the "baby orajel swabs". We would use those and a dose of tylenol because the orajel would help until the tylenol kicked in. (A tip we picked up from a daycare we used to take our daughter to.)

Usually the middle bottom teeth show up first, but she is right at the age when it is possible to be teething. Try some oragel, etc to see if this will help soothe her.

My girls starting teething at 4 1/2 months (and they were almost 2 months early when they were born!). They have not yet actually cut the gums yet (come thru to be visiable) despite several months going by. I was told by their Doc that usually the bottm fron tteeth come on but it can vary.

The best thing I can recommend for teething is Hylands teething tablets! They have been a life saver in this family. You can find them at CVS any other simular drug stores. They are all natural so you don't have to worry if giving them on a very regular basis (like i would worry if giving tylonel the smae amount). Other useful things are oralgel (but don't give before feedings because it can numb the gag reflex). also wetting the tip of a wash cloth and throwing it in the freezer can be comforting to chew on.

Keep in mind that with teething it can also be accompanied by a rash on the face (from drool), sometimes a fever, and even diahrea. It can also affect sleeping patterns. While all of these things can go hand in hand with teething some end up sprouting teeth with none of these side effects!

Good luck!

Usually the bottom middle teeth show up first, but I suppose kids could all be different in that way too. The fussiness could definitely be a sign of that. And watch for cold like symptoms with teething too. Although most doctors will tell you that teething will NOT give a child a cold, a lot of times it does. My own two kids always got sick when they teethed and most mothers I know experienced the same issues with their kids. Good Luck.

Hi Nidhi,
Both of mine had their front two bottom teeth come in first. My 9 month old has her third tooth coming in and its on the left side, too. I think every baby is different but you could ask the pediatrician at her next visit. Good luck!

she could be teething..is she drooling a lot or waking up in the middle of the night more?? The bump doesn't mean she's teething though babies have a lot of bumps that are different sizes in their mouths..but excessive drooling, fussiness, not wanting to eat,and waking up during the night are all signs..(actually its the middle bottom teeth that are the most common to come in first.)

My daughter is 8 1/2 months old. Her first tooth came last month and it is not all the way up yet. It was her bottom tooth and now she is getting another tooth right beside it that is cutting through. She has several that are getting ready to come through that haven't cut the gum yet. This has to be the worst part of having a baby. I am a first time mother and I love it but the teething just has to be the worst.

Generally the front teeth do come in first but I had a child who cut her teeth differently the four middle bottom then the four middle front all at the same time. If you are taking her in for a 6 month check up and the lump is still there with no sign of the teeth coming in I would ask the doctor about it.
