H.K.
Use any of the suggestions below for detangling and softening, then brush the hair smooth over a steaming pot of water.
Works like a charm especially if the hair is the typical "saran" that most doll hair is made of.
I know this is an odd request, but I figured if there was an answer, one of you Mom's would know it. Is it even possible to restore doll hair to its smooth, soft texture? We have several dolls (and horses) that need a detangling session, but brushing the hair will untangle it but it doesn't quite do the trick. Any suggestions?

My party plan used to sell dolls and we were told to brush the dolls hair with a clean toothbrush. You can brush the hair around your finger and it looks great! Try it. You will see how great it works.
Try using a wire bristled brush.
American Girl suggests taking a spray bottle with water and adding a little hair conditioner to it. Spray the hair lightly and gently comb through with a WIRE hair brush starting at the bottom and working your way up.
Using a regular nylon hair brush will make the hair frizzy but I have found that the little plastic hair brushes that come with Barbie and My Little Pony to work ok on smaller things. The wire brush is best for dolls having a big head of hair.
The conditioner will work to smooth out the hair but is not a miracle cure if the hair is badly damaged from over brushing. Hope this helps.
I have used regular spray-on detangler for my daughters dolls and it has actually worked! I used to wash my barbie's hair when I was young with shampoo and conditioner and that worked too! If that doesn't work after trying it on one doll, I would call a wig shop and see what they suggest.
I hear this week from a friend that fabric softener works great. Put on like conditioner and comb through....not sure if you rinse or leave it though.
Hello,
I believe we used Detangler on my daughters doll's hair so make it smooth again "she was ruff on her dolls". I used the same stuff you use on their hair, try it for the doll's hair and just go slow and easy with a fine tooth comb.
Good Luck :)
Here is a lonk with pictures too. =D
