My daughter (18 months) has the most beautiful fine hair with lots of big curls in the back. She takes a bath every night, we dry her hair, but in the morning she wakes up with a huge frizzy mess in the back. It's getting so bad it's to the point where it almost damaged and I'd hate for all of her curls to disappear. I'm coming up at a loss of what to do to prevent this. I have used conditioner in her hair, as well as some leave-in stuff, but she still gets the frizzy hair in the morning. Maybe I'm not using a correct kind for her. I always work through the knots in her hair, so I won't damage it more, but I'd LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to find a way to try and prevent this and fix what is damaged. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

My daughter is the same way, and I seem to be the only one that ever brushes it. If my husband is with her when she gets up on the days I work I come home and she is a total frizzy fuzz ball! What has been working for me is as soon as I get her out of the bath I put some detangling spray in her hair, comb it out, and then after she wakes up in the morning I put more spray in her hair and it's easier to comb out again. Sauve makes some great affordable detangler spray for kids and it smells really good. My daughter likes it because I can comb out her hair easily without her getting really fussy. Good luck!

I use this stuff called BedHead on my kids. I think it is made by Johnson & Johnson. You can find it at any Walmart store. It's wonderful stuff. Hope it helps.

Hello,

I am the mother of 3 bi-racial girls, my oldest just turned 3 last week and her hair is very frizzy. About 4 months ago I was finally done with making her cry everytime I wanted to comb her hair. I had been (EVERY NIGHT) putting her hair up in piggy tails and little buns and when I took it down in the morning it was much easier to deal with. Her hair got more thick and longer, so I went to the salon and got some this gel stuff from Paul Mitchell called super skinny serum...it's $15 for a 5.1 oz bottle, but I still have about half left. I usually keep her hair parted down the middle and in piggy tails. I put 2 pumps into my hands and rub it into the hair starting at the ends and working my way to the roots on each side(4 pumps for the whole head)...you may be able to use less if her hair isn't so thick. This prevents me from having to comb it at all...It gives her hair a groomed look with out all the tears from brushing. You can use it when her hair is wet or dry. Now instead of brushing her hair everyday and going through the "no mommy"'s and "ouch mommy"'s I only usually brush her hair after baths and only after I put the serum on it. This has made it so much easier to deal with her hair that she dosen't mind when I have to "do" her hair. Hope this helps.

I have curly hair also, and let me tell ya... There's nothing you can do to prevent her hair from going all crazy once it's dry and she's rolling around while she's sleeping. Trust me, frizzy bed-head is just something you get used to. You can try to lessen it by using headbands or ponytails, but there will always be tangles.

The best thing to do is use a detangling spray or leave-in conditioner before you brush her hair out, and always ALWAYS use a pick or a large-toothed comb. Never a brush or a fine comb. You don't need to shampoo her hair every day. It's a lot better for hair, especially curly, if you let the natural oils build up for a couple days between shampooings. I'd just rinse and maybe use a conditioner on the off days. As she gets older, make sure she uses a good moisturizing conditioner and brushes her hair out completely every day. I had to start out by brushing my hair in the shower while conditioner was in it, otherwise I couldn't get all the tangles out. Now I can put conditioner in, run my fingers through my hair, and I'm fine to comb it when I get out of the shower.

well to add to everyone's comments, I have curly hair and I have tried almost every product known to man. The one thing that I have found to be fantastic is any products in the John Frieda Frizz Ease line. I had issues with frizz and that works wonders, it feels smooth, not sticky, and I put that in after my shower before i go to bed and then it is all crunched out and it looks and feels natural and it isn't very frizzy. And also it should get better with length with the weight. Give that a shot, and also mouse is better than gel because gel is soo heavy and sicky and it can damage. I also highly suggest finding a a hair dresser that KNOWS curly hair well. 99% of hair dressers don't know what they are talking about when it comes to curly hair they treat it like it was straight and it doesn't work that way. There is a lady over at clipper jims that is great, (that is anouther thing that i've had issues with) She's great and knows what she is talking about. For future referance never get her hair thinned with a razor, if you do get it thinned with a razor, frizz will have a whole new meaning!! And also don't use a blow dryer just let it air dry. Just something to try, good luck!!

Being a curly headed person with fine hair, I suggest not washing your daughters hair every single day unless it is dirty. People with curly and especially fine hair sometimes don't have as much oil build up, so unless it is dirty let the hair rest and relax. Most of the time I wash mine and my daughters no more than every other day. Also, you can damage hair really easy when it is wet. If you do need to comb through it use a wide tooth comb, but I just read an article that basically said that not fussing with your hair everyday is the best thing for it. Deep conditioners are great especially on the ends of this kind of hair. I don't know how long your daughters hair is, but sometimes just a little trim can also be helpful ever so often for tangles.

Hope that helps,
C.

My 4 year old has hair like this. It is crazy!! It is so bad that I have to either have her shower in the morning with me, wet her hair in the morning, or put it in pig tails. For the first few years, we wore it in pig tails or a pony tail every day. We had to because it is such a mess. My hair dresser told me to stop doing this so often, because I was breaking the hair off and it would never grow long or thick enough to help the craziness stop. I put a tiny amount of texturizer in it when it is damp (not wet, but damp). That helps alot, but after a few hours, it is crazy again. Her curls aren't tight curls and but if we try to brush it straight, she almost gets an afro. She has blonde (well, almost white) hair and my hairdresser said that it is uncommon for someone with natrually blonde hair not to have bone straight hair. I know that I didnt' help much, other than to say that we are in the same boat. If you hear some pretty good suggestions, please let me know. It is frustrating to have a daughter that looks like she just crawled out of bed with crazy hair, the majority of her day. :)

Not sure how curly you are talking about... but I have a 14 month old son with TONS AND TONS of curly hair. He is bi-racial, but his hair is the texture of caucasian hair. I use lotion in his hair. It keeps it so soft. Doesn't get "crunchy" from gels or mousses. Smells good (like babies should). :) And it doesn't feel "greasy" to touch. It doesn't get on his clothes, it doesn't get on furniture... It is the ONLY thing I can do to keep his frizzes down. It makes his hair so soft and his curls so pretty. (Not that boy's should have "pretty" in their description... but his curls are gorgeous!) Hehe

There are some GREAT poducts out there to try...and if you buy professional, the salons stand behind thier products so if you use it and hate it...TAKE IT BACK they will let you exchange it until you find what really works! It's great and then you won't be stuck with several product under your sink! Also the BEST way to prevent her hair from getting damaged and tangled in the night is to use a silk pillow case, seems simple and too easy...but it works! Give it a try!
Good luck!

I also have really curly hair and I have found that the pantene prov hydrating curls works great for me. There are a lot of products out there and I was 21 before I found something that works for me. My mom used to braid my hair before bed and that would keep most of it out of a tangled mess. I hope it helps.

K.,
I don't know what "kind" of hair your little girl has. My babydoll is bi-racial and her hair has become more course since birth. I wash her hair in regular baby shampoo, then use Pantene's "hydrating curls" conditioner in it (I have curly hair too :) After washing her hair, I brush it and I will put it up or use a cute head band to pull the front part back. It's adorable! Also, don't brush curls after they are dry. Perhaps a leave-in conditioner of some sort may help. There are also "de-frizzing" products available at almost any store. The best thing about curly hair is that usually no one can see whether or not it's tangled, so try just letting her curls be. :) Also you can look online or in magazines for cute curly hair styles. Good luck!

My friend uses Head Mayonaise in her daughter's hair. She finds it at the dollar store but I am sure it is in Walmart as well. Also, I was told that sleeping on satin pillow cases prevents the hair from drying out? Don't know if it is true though.

Hi K.,

My daughter has really curly hair too. Actually so do I and my son. I have tried about everything possible. I know it sounds bad but it really really works. Put a little liquid fabric softener in a spray bottle and add water. Spray it on her hair in the morning and it helps detangle her hair and curl her curls back up. That way you dont have afro baby all day. Never try to do her hair while it is dry. You are asking for trouble. I also use a light oil moisturizer. You can go to the ethnic section in the store and buy the kids pink oil moisturizer. That combined with the fabric softner works wonders. I tell everyone I know that has curly kids to use the fabric softner. Works great and smells nice too. lol. You could also shampoo and condition with Suave. They have a new product. Sleek and straight. It sounds funny but it works and it is a lot cheaper than other products. Good luck and let me know if anything you try works for you. I am willing to try new things too. Luck Mommy.

My little boy has fine, curly, frizzy hair also. Just like me!! I don't shampoo it every day so it doesn't dry out. I have been wetting his hair down with Suave detangling spray, combing it out and the using just a little hair gel. It seems to hold all day and doesn't take too much time to do.

Try Nioxin's leave-in spray conditioner. Big Healthy Hair Soy Wheat Protein spray works really well too. My four-year-old has baby-fine curls in the back too. These are the only products that truly work for her. They're both good because they aren't heavy. They are a little pricey, but it's worth it because there's less resistance to the oh-so-necessary combing. Hope this helps.

PS: Braiding her hair or putting it in "Zulu Knots" at night helps too. It makes morning more manageable.

I haven't read every response you've gotten, so I'm sorry if I'm repeating any of them. My daughter has pretty curly and soft hair too. I use suave shampoo and cond. for curly hair on her and I love the results. Whenever I'm going to be brushing her hair, I use a spray bottle with water to wet it all down thoroughly, and then use a pick or wide-tooth comb to get the tangles out. Suave also makes a spray that you can use on wet or dry hair that doesn't make it stiff like gel does. Each product sells for around $2 a bottle, so it's cheap and it looks good! After I brush all the knots out I use a towel to scrunch it and then shape her perfect ringlet curls =).
For prevention of the fuzzies in the morning, I would say a use silk pillowcase or put a scarf on her head at bedtime...but since she's so young she probably doesn't even use a pillow yet, and good luck getting the scarf to stay on for more than 12 seconds. I don't think you can totally prevent her frizzies in the morning. I think your best bet is to spray water on her hair before you brush or comb it, and use a little detagling spray. Good luck! and have fun with that curly hair!!

Not sure if this would help at all, but I have very natural curly hair and it gets frizzy at night as well. However, when I pull it back and sleep with it in a pony tail, the next morning it's not so bad, little frizz and it's not tangled.
