Tailbone Pain in Pregnancy

I am in my 25th week of my first pregnancy and I have noticed recently that my tailbone is hurting when I lay on my back. Is it too early for this type of pain to be caused by the pregnancy? I have only gained about 6 pounds so far, but the baby is doing fine according to my doctor. So I'm certainly not gaining too much weight yet. I would imagine the baby is only a couple pounds and while I do have a small bump and feel the abdominal stretching, I just wonder why I'd already be feeling pain on my backside. Is this normal?

What can I do next?

Its definitely not too early. Sorry you are hurting! I used to put warm compresses on my lower back and then have my husband massage that area--you can strattle a chair and lean forward while he massages it-.*sorry for the wording. As you change in pregnancy your whole body has to shift--even if you have only gained 6 pounds. Hang in there~

I'm 18 weeks & a couple weeks ago , my tailbone started hurting , not consistently but especially during Pilates. Like you , my weight shouldn't be the issue , I'm 10 lbs down from pre-pregnancy. I would say it's normal.

Totally normal! Your uterus is putting extra weight and pressure on your tailbone when you are in this position. This is one of the reasons it is suggested to lay on your side and not your back. Try a different position for now and you can bring it up at your next appointment if it still bothers you.

Yep, mine started to hurt around 25 weeks to.

I can't believe you've only gained 6 lbs at 25 weeks! I was at 8lb at 20 weeks, but since hitting 20, I've been gaining a lb a week!

I had pain in my tailbone and hips in my 2nd pregnancy, and it ended up being a sacral misalignment. I had to see a chiropractor once a week to relieve the pain. I would recommend getting checked by a chiropractor before yours gets as bad as mine. They can teach you some stretches and gentle exercises to help it from getting worse. Good luck!

I didn't have pain in my tailbone, but I did have "pelvic pain" (dr.'s brilliant term). I refused at first, but eventually went to a chiropractor per the persistance of my husband and it worked wonders!!!! Hubby found a chiro in the area that was trained in working with pregnant women and it helped me feel so much better!!! I highly recommend it! :-) Good luck...
