I almost died when I weighed in at my 25 week appointment yesterday! 8.5 lbs in 4 weeks! I am overweight and was planning on trying to gain 25lbs TOTAL this pregnancy, this puts me at 18 lbs total weight gain already! The Dr. said it could be a baby growth spurt and I could also be retaining water (My legs feel VERY swollen at the end of the day). My belly measures about 26cm so that's normal. Heartbeat was normal and I am feeling a lot of movement, so that;s good. I also took the glucose test and am nervous to hear the results on friday, especially after this huge weight gain. He said he would worry if I gained this much weight every time, that this was 'concerning' but "nothing to worry too much about".

I am so discouraged and of course worried. I can't stop thinking about it! ARGH!

What can I do next?

I gained 14lbs total with my son and now I'm 29 weeks pregnant with baby # 2 and I've gained a total of 28lbs so far. I was kinda concerned at first but I feel like I guess the baby needs it so I just do what I can for now and I'll worry about dieting after the baby!

If you are eating healthy, do not worry about it. If you are eating things that are not healthy, try to cut back.. The baby will take what the baby needs.. This is a very important part of the babies development..

As long as you're avoiding the sodas and sugar, don't worry about it. Remember--you're pregant and SUPPOSED to gain weight ;) Putting a limit on how much you gain during a pregnancy is impossible. Don't stress about it and enjoy your new little miracle.

Your Doctor will monitor you.
Don't worry.

For me, with my 2nd pregnancy... my Doctor allowed me to only gain 15 pounds total. I didn't do anything special nor limit what I ate.. I just ate healthily... and my Doctor said NO juice. For him, that is just empty calories and sugar.
No problem.

For that pregnancy, I did only gain 15 pounds total. Not even trying.
It was fine.
But my previous pregnancy, I gained 25 pounds.
Both my kids with both pregnancies, were born healthy and fine.

For you, probably water gain and retention... is adding to your overall 'weight' gain.

Try not to freak out. 18lbs at 25 weeks is pretty good. If you figure that you SHOULD gain about 1 lb/week in your third trimester, you'll be fine. You may wind up a little over 25, more like 30lbs, but that's not bad.

Just be careful not to stuff your face with junk food and stay active.

I gained 25 lbs with my first and 32 with my second (just delivered 3 mos ago). In both cases, I lost every lb that I gained by 6 weeks pp. Just make sure that you stay active and you'll be fine.

I'm overweight too, and when I heard my coworker say that she gained 16 pounds her entire pregnancy, I was so depressed. I gained that much by week 18! I ended up gaining 48 and 55 with each baby. I didn't try to diet with either one as I felt I was giving my body over the them, and they apparently needed it. My glucose tests were both fine. Don't panic, weight fluctuates all over, as long as the baby is healthy, that is what matters.

If you're retaining water then you're not drinking enough. I know that's been a problem for me. I've gained about 30 lbs and I'm 39 weeks, BUT I started out overweight. Just make sure you're drinking plenty of water and making healthy food choices. Sometimes our bodies just do what they're gonna do!

I just had my 25 week appt today and gained 10 lbs in 4 weeks!!!!!!!!!! So, I feel your pain!!! I also am measuring 26cm and everything else seems normal. I'm also anxiously awaiting glucose results.
My doctor didn't seem too concerned about weight gain, but did strongly recommend that I exercise (walk) 4-5x/week about 30 minutes/day.
Just wanted to let you know that you are not alone:)

While there are some increased risks with gaining too much in pregnancy, it is also not a time to try to diet. Just focus on eating a healthy, well-balanced diet and if you are not active, try to add some walking to your daily routine. But in the end, you gain what you gain, try not to stress about it. I have had 4 babies and always had an extra big gain in the mid-20s weeks. Toward the end of my last pregnancy I had started going every 2 weeks, and lost a pound at one visit, maintained at the next, and gained 4 at the next. I didn't feel like i was doing anything different during that time, so it can be pretty unpredictable. Don't focus on the weight, just enjoy the rest of your pregnancy.

I honestly don't think that is a big deal at all. I am not overweight and I gained about 70 poinds with each pregnancy. It always comes off and my OB has never been concerned as my blood pressure has alwasy been really good and glucose screens have always come back normal. I think the "recommended" weight gain of 35 pounds, or whatever it is, cannot be realistically applied to every woman. We all have diffferent body types and our bodies all react differently to being pregnant, so if you eat healthy and still gain 50, 60, 70 poundsduring a pregnancy, big deal. You shouldn't diet or try to restrict calories while pregnant; your body is remarkably smart and knows what it needs and knows what to do, so don't worry too much about 8 pounds in two weeks. I certainly do not advocate eating poorly, junk foods or super fattening foods all the itme, I just don't think you should worry if you are eating when you are hungry with nutrition in mind, that's all. Good luck!

hello, don't worry you're body is going threw so much right now. yes when they weigh you especially when you are pregnent can be nerve racking but be easy on yourself. you are making another person and the body is going to do what ever it takes to provide for it. take it easy and eat whatever you want or whatever you can hold down. after the baby comes you will loose the weight, sometimes around ten pounds after all the water weight is gone.. take care

I had a similar experience and my doctor said there was no way it was all me and that it must be water weight. I retained a lot of water with both my pregnancies (despite drinking plenty of water). As long as the baby and I were healthy, I tried not worry and figured I'd deal with the weight later. I lost all the weight within a year of giving birth both times, despite not particularly trying (still don't have the muscle tone, but that's a different issue!). Hang in there!

try not to worry too much. With my first baby I had a big jump in weight gain like that too. I have a small frame....like my starting weight was 117. But during month 6 I gained 8 pounds! I had gained a total of about 18 pounds just like you and I was so worried that I would continue to gain 8 pounds for each month. But I didn't, in fact the next weigh in I lost 2 pounds and then ended up only gaining 28 pounds total. So I wouldn't worry too much just continue to try and eat healthy. You'll be ok.

No worries. I gained 9 lbs in a month TWICE - my doctor just smiled and finally said, "Well, maybe watch your carb intake". I gained 46 lbs total and then took off 48 pounds in the year after his birth by nursing. I didn't diel - I just ate carefully and had sweets sometimes. You'll be ok.

Hugs honey. Because I had KILLED my metabolism (female athlete triad type anorexia), I gained 20 lbs a month for 10 months. Yup gained 200lbs. More than doubled my weight. I was on a very strict diet (not the lose weight type diet but *actual* diet, meaning to make sure I was getting enough nutrition : x grams of protein a day, etc... all totaling out to 1800-2200 calories a day worked out by a nutritionist), and on bedrest to boot for half my pregnancy. I just cried and bore it. Being preggers meant it was about my son and not my own body image.

Guess what? I lost over 50lbs in the first week (sooooo much water weight), and over 100 the first year. It really does melt off.

If you are planning on breastfeeding, I wouldn't worry about it too much. don't starve yourself, just eat healthy - that bowl of ice cream that you crave every night (at least that is what I craved) just turn into one scoop....LOL I say just watch the quantity of what you eat, everything in moderation. don't completely deprive yourself of the good stuff, just don't eat as much of it. AND if you do end up having gestational diabetes, it's not so bad, I had it. You can usually keep it under control with your diet, and they send you to a nutritionist. It is amazing to see what a serving size should actually be. (they have fake little food to represent the size you should be eating) we eat WAY too big of portions. What is your total weight gain so far?? are you about 1/2 of what you want to gain now? 25 lbs. from my understanding is on the low end of how much you should gain...you may want to reconsider your target gain amount to something a little more realistic....I don't think that I EVER gained only 25 lb. when preg. but when breastfeeding I have always lost more than I gained during the pregnancy.....Good Luck and try not to worry, in the grand scheme of things, you really just need to have a healthy baby!!
