Suggestions for 3Yr Old's First Camera?

I want to get my daughter a digital camera for her 3rd birthday. Any suggestions? <$50 if possible. My online search tells me that button placement, drop factor, and ability to view photos are important... I'd be awesome if it actually took decent pictures (at least 1MP) that I can download to the computer. Do you have one you like/dislike? Why? Suggestions? Thanks!

What can I do next?

For my son's 3rd birthday I bought him the VTech Kidzoom digital camera/video recorder. He LOVES it! Right now I can't remember if it came with the memory card or we had to buy it. I also hooks up to the T.V. so we can view the videos he's taken and the pictures. I think it's a great camera for kids.

We got my daughter the V-Tech kids camera (link below). It is about $60, we found it on sale right before holidays. She takes tons of pictures and there are games on it as well. She loves it and takes on all trips.

Get a used camera. camera geeks are always upgrading, so look at craigslist or something and get one used. The whole family will enjoy it.

V Tech Kid Zoom is actually pretty great and if you shop around and get it on sale, its pretty close to what you're looking to spend. We bought one for my son when he was three and obsessed with OUR digital camera (and we didn't want him playing with/breaking it). The Kid Zoom has alot of the same features of a grown up digital cam, but REALLY REALLY takes a beating. My son dropped his down our basement stairs (or, more than likely, tossed it down) and it was still going strong. In fact, he's five now and still has and uses it.

Kid Zoom has all kinds of crazy images your daughter can add to the pictures she's taken (like silly eyes/enlarged features/etc) and backgrounds and frames too. Also has about four games right on the camera like puzzles (which she can turn her pictures in to) memory games, etc. Also has video and can be attached to the TV or computer and downloaded. His is an older model and the newer model is even better with more features (like zoom, which his doesn't have) and a better picture quality.

I HIGHLY recommend V Tech Kid Zoom. She will most likely LOVE LOVE LOVE it!

It depends on your child. When my son was 3, we bought him a cheap camera, that had all of the bells and whistles that the others did....and it was awful. He complained about the blurry pictures (AND it wasn't him, because I took some and they were awful), small memory and the best you could print was 4x6 with any clarity.

We thought about how stupid it was to spend a small amount on a mediocre camera and wasted money on a larger memory card....that we should have just bought him a decent camera to begin with. We bought him a Kodak Easy Share for him and he loves it. It was $99 (with a discount) and WELL worth it. Spending a little more money to get something that actually worked was worth it. It also has video, which he loves. He has taken very good care of it....but we teach our children to respect their things.

Our son is pretty techo-savvy. He had his own computer my husband built for him before he was 3 and now that he is 7, he has music, does his homework on it, Rosetta Stone and is able to upoad pics to it.

Sometimes you can find cameras at www.propertyroom.com. Some are still in the box! Just watch for the comments at the bottom. They will tell you, new, scratched, etc. Also make sure it has all the cords necessary to charge so forth.

Good luck!

I bought my daughter a Vtech too. Really disappointed. If you don't hold the camera absolutely still long enough the pictures are pretty blurry. And when the batteries died, any pictures not downloaded were lost (never figured out where the memory card slot was). All the extras are fun - superimposing hats and other things onto pictures, games.

That being said, at 3, my daughter could care less how clear the pictures were and she had fun using it. (Now that she's older, she does care.)

Awwwww! Yay! ((We got our son his first camera at 3)). After researching, we decided to go with NOT a kid's camera. Spent about $60 at the time for a 6mp camera (got it on sale, but not a huge sale, it was also the previous gen... the 8mps had just come out). We just taught him to be careful with it. And he was then and is now. It's a Nikon CoolPix camera and it's still going strong 5 years later.

Last year (age 7) we got him a Flip video camera. Christmas "techie" sales at Amazon ROCK. $200 camera for $49.

I believe the one Kristy is talking about is the best one for a 3 yr old since it's kid tough and 2 megapixel which is an upgrade from the fisher price indestructible camera that is like 1mp... they can turn pics grainy on the computer when you print em out
