Sub Chorionic Hemorrhage in Early Pregnancy

Ok, so I went to the doctors today, we think I am about 7 weeks along. Everything looked great on exam, but she sent me for an ultrasound to make sure everything was ok due to a very small amount of spotting for about a day. They called me within hours of my ultrasound and said that the baby is small for 7 weeks and that I have a small sub chorionic hemorrhage, which terrified me. I asked flat out if that presents a problem for my pregnancy. Her response was not necessarily and made an appointment for another ultrasound in a week and an appointment with the doctor. They said no intercourse and no lifting. This is my first pregnancy ever and even though she said it doesn't necessarily cause a problem, hearing those words really terrifies me. I have a couple of questions...
1. does the small size of the baby indicate anything i should be concerned about or just that maybe we're off a little on how old the baby is.
2. I need some clarification on this whole condition. I read that it can be nothing, but it can also present some issues as well.
If anyone has any information they could give that would be great!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Ok, so i wanted to give a little update on everything. Tuesday I went and had another internal ultrasound and they said there is no more hemorrhage which is great news and we got to see baby's heartbeat! But, since tuesday I've had some spotting and then this morning it turned to more blood than brown (sorry if that's TMI) with cramps. So i called my OBGYN and they set me up for another ultrasound next monday and they moved up my IOB from the beginning of October to a little over a week from now, they want to check blood all those things. So, for now its another wait and see game. Praying and hoping our little Peanut will be ok. Thank you for all the continued support. <3

If your doctor is basing how far along you are on your last period, that can definitely be off! Those little charts they use make the assumption that everyone has the same, 28-day cycle, and that everyone ovulates on a certain day in that cycle, and that everyone conceives the day they ovulate. That is a lot of assumptions! You are a person, not an egg-dropping robot, your cycle could easily be different from the one on the chart. For example, with my second pregnancy conception happened 10 days LATER than the chart said it "should."
Try to relax, and best wishes for a healthy pregnancy!!

J.,

Welcome to mamapedia!!

First thing you need to do is calm down and breathe. Stress will NOT help you nor will it help your pregnancy.

A hematoma is a bruise, which has blood that gathers together. How will this affect your pregnancy? I don't know. You will need to talk with your doctor about that.

There are so many factors,
size of Hematoma
mothers age
fetus stage/age

Does this increase your risk of miscarriage? It might. Again, only your doctor who has examined you and is caring for you will know this answer.

Can it go away on its own? Yes. Will it? I don't know.

The size of your baby? Well - with technology being the way it is, women are finding out MUCH EARLIER when they are pregnant. Is it possible you conceived later than think you did? Yes. The doctor will keep an eye on it and keep measuring the baby.

Good luck!

Like the others have shared, I had this (with my 2nd pregnancy). He's now a 10-year-old bruiser of a boy. I bled so much and passed a clot so big that I was sure I had miscarried. I was SHOCKED to find that there was still a little guy in there when I had an ultrasound at the hospital. The rest of the pregnancy was fine and he was born a day shy of his due date, perfectly healthy.

Don't put too much stock into sizes, those are estimates at best.

Sending you prayers and positive thoughts that you get some reassuring news soon! And Congrats!!!

I never had that diagnosis because I never had an ultrasound like that. But I bled for a week with my second child. I was pretty sure it was just a normal period that indicated I was miscarrying. Nope. That little sucker is 10 years old now and healthy as an ox. Many pregnancies experience trouble and go on to be just fine. Hang in there.

I had that with my pregnancy and I now have a very healthy 8 year old. I did not change anything that I was doing, still went to work, school , etc. I had spotting in the first trimester and then again in the third. They induced me 3 weeks early and I ended up having a C-section.

There is no know cause or treatments for this but be prepared for many ultra sounds. I was going about once a month. This would not effect the size of your baby but make sure you eat a very healthy diet either way.

Yes, I've had this experience with my now very healthy 16 year old daughter. I spotted with her for the first 10 weeks or so. Then had a large amt. of bleeding all at once at 13 weeks...I thought for sure I was miscarrying.

Ended up being a "chorionic separation" and did not experience bleeding the rest of my pregnancy. I did take it easy for quite some time...no bedrest, but nothing strenuous.

I had other high-risk issues also and they told me she may be small at birth, but she ended up around 7 lbs and perfectly healthy!

It depends on how big the hemorrhage is and how well the baby is growing. My sister's son and my daughter are proof that sometimes it just goes away and the baby is healthy. Sometimes it can cause a miscarriage. Sometimes not. You'll need to discuss more with your doctor.

Feet up do NOTHING for the next week to do your best to prevent miscarrige could end up happening but not likely. Just relax. You could be a little earlier then what you think. Just chill out.

I had this during my pregnancy with my now 5 year old son. I had a lot of bleeding it was pretty scary but just try to not worry so much! Mine was large about 15cm if I remember right. It went away by about 20 weeks .. I did need to be on bed rest but that was near impossible with a 2 year old at the time! Whatever you do don't go googling all of the horror stories about it that made it so much worse for me!

I had one with my second (he's 4 months old now.) they kept an eye on it and it cleared itself up. The thing my doctor was most worried about was that it can lead to pre-term labor, which I ended up having a higher risk of with gestational diabetes as well and I did have him at 38 weeks, which was fine.

It was super scary when I had the spotting, and the nurse was pretty dismissive of it, but the doctor called back and gave me more info and scheduled me for another ultrasound. I was on total vaginal rest (no sex, nothing in the vagina) for a month or so. I understand the fear, and them telling you to relax and not worry doesnt help. Just do your best and get as much rest as you are able.
