Test use white vinegar on an inconspicuous area of the sofa. It usually removes the smell from cloth.
Hello Moms!
Several days ago my son threw up on our couch. I got as much of it up as I could, then I poured salt all over it to try to soak it up (not sure if that worked or not). I waited a few days for it to air out, then used Resolve. It still smells really bad!! If anyone has any ideas for getting the smell out I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

Don't know if this will work with vomit, but we do this with all "accidents" including pet accidents.
Re-wet the area with water. Then liberally apply cornstarch and let it dry. Then vacuum it up. So far, this has gotten us through potty training and kitty hairballs, and the carpet does not smell. It also took grape juice out of my couch.
Hope this helps. Good Luck!
Hi C.
Cover it with baking soda. Let it set and then sweep it up. May take several times.
Sam's has something called OdoBan. It will get that odor out and disinfect as well. Test on a hidden area first to be sure it is colorfast (though I have never yet had it ruin colors) and then follow the directions. This stuff is great in the laundry, too when you have especially stinky, or germ laden laundry.
My daughter used it in all of her laundry loads when she worked on a floor of the hospital where she was particularly likely to have come in contact with contaminated body fluids, and highly communicable diseases.
Hi C.,
Use this spray - "Natures Miracle". You can buy it at Petsmart. I have used it for years. It cleans up after the dogs and children! I originally got it for dog waste/vomit/smell. It also has taken cherry koolaid out of my carpet when I find the stain (while it's still damp - I have boys!) But be careful since you already have used other products. Good Luck, S.
I love the "Kids and Pets" solution for stuff like this.
It's in a big yellow bottle and they sell it at Walmart I think. It really has worked for everything my daughter and my dogs have "thrown" at us! It's all natural and seems to be safe for most fabrics/upholstry and carpets. Once you know a smell is there, isn't it amazing how sensitive we can be to it??? Anyway, with this stuff...I put it on, but then have to let it air dry for quite a while.
Good luck...
I have never had any luck doing anything other than getting it professionally cleaned. I think it has something to do with the high hot water temp. My brother in law cleans carpets and such for a living, also has something special that he puts on carpet and upholstery that was thrown up on. I usually have to have 2 applications before the throw up smell goes away. If you're interested Classic Carpet Cleaning (in Olathe) ###-###-####
Hi C.! You posted your question just in time because I need the same help only with my kid, he threw up all over the wall of the stairwell and down about 14 painted wood stairs and I cannot get the smell out!! It was chili and took me 2 hours to clean up and I have used bleach, clorox wipes, lysol you name it and it stinks to high heavens. Any moms have any suggestions??? THANK YOU!

Hi C.,
I'm an old grandma who had a projectile vomiter years ago. This was one of the best tips anyone ever gave me about odors. Mix a tablespoon of baking soda with 2 or 3 cups of water and wipe the fabric using a cloth. Surface odors should be gone but you may have to wet the fabric pretty well if the odor has penetrated. It should take that sour smell away. I would always take a babyfood jar with the mixture in the diaper bag with me so if the baby spit up sour milk, it would take the smell right out of her clothes. Hope this helps.

how about febreeze? i've never had to get vomit out of anything but we just went through a minor fire and had a lot of smoke damage, and the febreeze worked wonders on the smell. good luck!
I read on the back of the borax container you could use that on the couch. Or Odoban. I don't remember where you can get that. Iwill have to find out.
I'm sure you've already heard this, but baking soda!
I use to use something called Odor Out that I got from Sam's. It was wonderful. A couple of times spraying the area and you couldn't smell it again, even in a car in the summer. Not sure if they carry it anymore but I've heard that the odor removers you can get at Petsmart are the same thing. Maybe someone else has some experience with those. Good luck!
odo-ban. it's in the laundry section at wal-mart.
it has always worked for me.
I have not had this problem, but vinegar gets smells out of clothing in the washer. Maybe pour it (or dilute it 1/2 & 1/2 with water).
God Bless & Merry Christmas!
You might try Febreeze.
I have used baking soda for those mishaps and pee accidents. I rub it in then let it dry and vaccuum it up. Also, I have just started using some new cleaning products. NORWEX, it is environmently friendly. They have an ordor eliminator that is to be really good. You can look them up on line, www.norwex.com and find a local consultant.
Baking soda., just sprinkle it on the spot and let sit for at least 8 hours.( i usually do it at night)then
vacume. also try putting a dryer sheet on the spot and use your blow dryer for about 5 mins. both these suggetions worked great when my cat had a uti and if they can remove cat smells it should work for vomit.
good luck

Can you take the cover off of the cushion? If so, then remove the cover and treat the foam. That is probably where the smell resides. There is a formula called Odoban and Smells Be Gone that you can use to treat it. Good luck and God Bless.
odoban. that'll do the trick... i guarantee it. you may try the baking soda wipe down first then keep spraying the odoban on it. (this is what i use at work for somr God awful odor, i hope noone else here has to encounter!) odoban is at walmart, in the laundry isle... it's about 3 bucks. and excellent o keep on hand... good luck
Vinegar. I use it all the time in laundry and on the floor when the dog pee's on it.
C., If you have access to something that could quickly suck the solution back up, try OxyClean. A steam cleaner or a wet vac would do the trick. I've had both that lovely smell from throw up and from my son pooping, loose, on the carpet. OxyClean got the smell out from both.
Good Luck, M.
