Okay, I know this is a gross question, but my son threw up in the car last week and I've been trying to get the smell out for days. Any suggestions on what to do or how I can make it go away? I just got a new car and it's driving me crazy! Any advice is greatly appreciated!
I sprinkled baking soda on the mats in the car. Let it sit for 2 hours and then vacuumed it up. Sprayed with a mixture of water & white vinegar afterwards. Left the car windows down over night and the next day the smell was completely gone! I am still keeping boxes of baking soda in the car to help continue to keep the smell out.
It worked great!

Try Arm& Hammer baking soda. Use it dry, let it sit on the odored stain for a day (not longer or it willfade the color), the vacuum it up. You may have to do it a few times if the odor is really horrid, but A&H works for most all odor issues. Good Luck

lots of good suggestions
If you buy a product, buy something with enzymes that will eat the odor causing residue. Lots of different choices!

after you clean it all up and vacum the car. Put a cup of vingear in there and close up the car and let the vingear sit for a day or so. that will draw the smell and it will be gone!

You might try good old fashioned white distilled vinegar. clean up the area where your son threw up with detergent and then spray with the vinegar, let dry.
Vinegar will get cat urine out of clothing and rugs, so I'm sure it will work with throw up smell too.
Hope this helps

This has happened to me too many times! I would definately take the car seat out and take it all apart. Wash the fabric in the washer and clean the base really well and make sure to get the buckles and straps too. You can usually just hand wash those in the sink and let air dry. We usually take the car to the car wash and have the shampoo the seats and the carpet and that always works, but if you don't get the car seat good it will still smell. Good luck!

My daughter threw up on an airplane when we where descending and of course right near the aisl. The flight attendants quickly helped me clean up the vomit and pulled out unused coffee packages to neutralize the smell. Try this to see if it will help. HTH

My daughter vomited all over our ultrasuede-upholstered rocking chair. We immediately wiped away the vomit and cleaned it with the upholstery attachment on our carpet cleaner. The smell lingered, and I thought we'd have to get rid of the chair until we found a product called Totally Toddler at Babies R Us. We saturated the stains with Totally Toddler, waited about ten minutes, blotted with a clean cloth and let it air dry, permanently removing the odor and leaving the chair looking brand new. When our daughter was littler we used it all the time, including on our “dry-clean only” couch and various articles of clothing.

Home Depot sells this really strong deodorizer. I'm not sure what it's called but it's cherry. Just tell the guy in the automotive department what the problem is. He will get it for you.
Then you have to deal with the strong cherry smell for a while.

I feel for you. In my new car my son spilled his sippy cup of milk. I didn't know it until later when the smell of something dead hit me hard in the nose. Worse smell ever. I scrubbed and cleaned and took it to a car wash service and everything but my car never smelled the same.
I use Febreze for my car. I would like to know what you find out. Maybe it can save me too?

I had milk spill in the trunk of my car during the summertime. I put baking soda over the area it spilled in and let it sit there for a few days. Then I pulled out the vacuum and no more smell.

sprinkle some arm and hammer over the area, let it sit for a while and then vacuum it up. You may also want to fill a couple of containers with it and leave it in your car overnight to absorb the odor. good luck

I had the same thing happen sometime back and after trying all kinds of stuff to no avail I grabbed some Oreck No Return stain/odor remover and sprayed away. I left the windows down until I was sure everything was quite dry and to my relief it got rid of the odor. So far that stuff has worked on everything I've tried it on and I won't be without it. There are some Oreck stores in the area but I know for sure the one at Town East carries it. Good luck!

Yeah... my son did this about a year ago and I thought I cleaned the car seat good but the odor persisted and I was very wrong. When I pulled the car seat out and took the fabric all apart, there was a nasty mess in there. I would suggest taking the car seat out and apart and also cleaning the floorboards (ar anything that was barfed on) with a carpet cleaner. The leather is easy.
Good Luck!

Are you sure that every bit of the "spill" has been cleaned from the car? If so, you might try Ionic Pro. I believe they are made in a size specifically for cars. I know they do an excellent job in the home. Good luck!

Solumel from Melaleuca... it is awesome to get stains and odors out from "kid accidents" and "pet accidents"... it is all natural and a great cleaner. I have converted my entire home to Melaleuca products.. they are safe for your children should they be ingested and work really well. Solumel has gotten red wine, koolaid, throw up stains and smells and pet stains and smells out of my carpet...it really does work. T. Folsom

Odoban.
They sell it at Sam's if you're a member.
I've recently seen it at Home Depot and I've seen another Odoban product recently at Walmart.
It comes in a one gallon concentrate that's about $10. You can use it straight full strength or you can use it in a carpet or upholstery machine. Very nice non-perfumed scent and it doesn't leave a residue.

I swear by Baking Soda. My son spilt Chocolate milk and it sat - unbeknownst to me.. in the hot Texas sun! GROSS. I sprinkled Baking Soda on it, opened the windows, and then after it dried vacuumed it out. Couldn't believe what a great job it did!

This happened to me on a road trip and I had to smell it for 4 more hours until we got home. I used Fabreeze to help with the smell and left the windows open in the garage everytime it was in there. I now take the Fabreeze with me on road trips just incase! It did take the smell out, but I had to do it a few times. Good Luck!

My now 10 year previously experienced car sickness and got sick in the car several times when she was younger. Once I moved her car seat to the middle of the back seat where she could see ahead of us she almost completely stopped getting car sick.
A friend told me to buy Petzyme at Petsmart. After you clean the car up spray this on the spot(s) and it will eliminate the odor.
I have used this stuff in the house as well and it is very effective.
Hope this helps

I've noticed lately that baking soda can take the smell out of most anything.
I would mix it with water and scrub over the spot then remove with water.
I have the little green machine so if I had that I'd probably mix water with baking soda and use that as a solution and then clean with that.
Good luck.
In the future you may want to get a car seat cover - not for the car seat your toddler sits in but for the actual chair underneath it sits on. I have them over my seats and they have saved me a million times over! :)

My daughter did the same thing. Ugh it was awful but what I did was use baking soda and vinager to clean it after I cleaned everything else. I also sprayed the car with the no sent febreze. Since it is nice out maybe drive with the windows cracked to get the smell out.
Good Luck!

I agree with the mom who wrote about the coffee. After dousing your car with baking soda, letting it set to absorb odors, then vaccuming, you can use coffee to offset any remaining odor. I took an injured animal to the vet one day and it left quite a nasty mess in my car. After cleaning, I sprinkled (ok I poured) unused coffee grounds on the floors and left them there for a few days then vaccumed them up. I liked the smell so much i put some coffee grounds in an old knee high, tied it up and put it under my seat. It's so much nicer than some artificial air freshener.

If you've cleaned it all and the smell is still lingering, try cutting up a green Granny Smith apple and leaving it in the car. They typically absorb the odor in confined spaces fairly well (and it's a cheap alternative to deodorizers).

Rent a steam cleaner or buy one. My granddaughter threw up in our hall and it was huge. I had to go over it again and again. That was when I bought mine. Although I would not be without one again. I use it continually on all my carpets and scatter rugs and our dog has long hair so she also has accidents in the house some times. Good Luck G. W
