Stinky Cat Litter

Hi Mamas,
What is your favorite cat litter? I used to use Arm & Hammer with my previous cat and thought it worked the best - super clumping, never had an odor and sometimes I'd let the litter box go for even a week (bad, I know) but it never bothered me and didn't seem to bother him either. Now we have two cats and the Arm & Hammer didn't seem to be clumping enough for us - I don't know if they changed the formula? It seemed like we had to empty out the whole litter box at least every week or more (something I didn't do much of at all before). We have one now that works really well but it reaks of a perfumey smell that is driving me crazy. There's tons of dust with it and when they use it, you can smell it all the way down the hall. Its really terrible and I think it has to go. One note - I tried the more eco-friendly corn stuff and they wouldn't touch it, so I think I have to stink with the yucky stuff.

Thanks!
K.

So What Happened?

Hi Mamas, thank you all so much for your help. I think I forgot to clarify that my lazy habits were back when I was younger and had one cat. We now have two litter boxes for the two cats and scoop them out daily. I wasn't having problems with the smell of the pee or poop but it was the darn perfumey smell that was driving us crazy. Its so heavy that it makes the cats stink and you can smell it all the way down the hall in other areas of the house. Then that dust gets on things and its just gross. I am going to try a few of the brands mentioned here. Thanks so much!

There is not doubt what the best cat litter is and the is FRESH STEP SCOOPABLE. It does cost a little more that generic or the lower costing litters but I have 2 cats and would never but any other brand. Cheapest place to buy it is at SAMS. It is $14. for 40 lb. bucket. Next cheapest is Walmart but it is not where near the price at Sams.
I also use the sifter liners in the cat box. Works great.

I think Arm & Hammer has changed their formula. I bought a box recently and it was smelly immediately, even with scooping the same day.

I have been using the cheap scoopable litter from Aldi (it's a great deal) or the off-brand that Jewel sells, and those seem to be about the same as Tidy Cat to me, but I only have one cat. I do prefer to empty the whole box every week, though. (and scoop every couple of days.)

I always used Feline Pine with my cat and so does my mom. It really helps to stop the cat pee smell and is natural which is nice.

Hello!!
I had at one time 5 cats (no I'm not that kinda crazy). My most absolute favorite cat litter is Everclean. It is a little pricey & you can only get it @ pet stores like PetsMart, Petco, etc but it is so worth it!! It clumps like concrete so when you scoop you get everything out... Good luck!! =]

We have 2 cats too and I never can seem to scoop every day so we try to just buy better litter. We use either Fresh Step or Tidy Cat. The Fresh Step I think works a little better but it costs a bit more. They have an online Paw Points program where you can collect codes from their packaging to use for coupons or gifts for cat related stuff. Or you can donate your points to the ASPCA which is great because it is a great organization but I don't really have personal funds to donate. The Tidy Cat works pretty good too. I find that formulas with the blue crystals work best. I think a lot of their formulas have those crystals now. Both are pretty heavily scented but our cats don't seem to mind.

We have 4 cats (yes, that's a lot), and use Tidy Cat. There are a few different formulas for multiple cats. We have 4 cat boxes, and the 2 that are used more frequently are scooped daily. (The cats seem to have favorites). A cat could become picky and stop using the box because it's too dirty.

My cat also hates the eco stuff. My girls change the box because they say she is their cat. They do not always do a great job cleaning and sometimes say they did but you can tell they did not. We use the blue cap/lid of Tidy Cat. I think it is the best of the choices. It does a pretty good job without a huge amount of dust. It is usually on sale at Target so it is a pretty good price. I make them change the whole box every month or a little longer, along with scrubbing it clean with Soft Scrub or kitchen cleanser. The litter pan is in the basement but after a while, the smell can get bad if not cleaned out. Also the dirty litter has to be thrown out in the trash or it smells.

Fresh Step or Tidy Cat are the 2 that we use. Tidy Cat has stuff for multiple cats that is unscented. You really need to scoop the box more often, especially with 2 cats. I do it pretty much every single day. You could get 2 boxes if you wanted to cut down on scooping. I look at it this way, I would not want to go to the potty in a toilet filled with feces and urine so why should I make my cat?
