How to Eliminate Litterbox Odor

Our older cat is becoming quite stinky .. and his litterbox smells. All. the. time. We have tried every type of litter out there and nothing helps with the smell. We scoop it out daily (well, sometimes every other day) but it still smells... and the smell wafts through my house.

Do any of you have suggestions on how to mask the odor? I don't mind using Febreeze, but I'm looking for something a bit more permanent - like an air purifier. Any thoughts?-

Sorry - should have included: yes, he's been to the vet. He has kidney issues and is on a specially formulated food. It's actually his urine that smells, and that's due to his kidney issues.

I scoop every time they go....use scoopable litter....then put scoops in garage or outside trash. that's the only way to get rid of the smell. The cat may also have gone on carpet?

My house didn't smell at all, but I would confine the cat when I wasn't home in a room with the litter and no carpet. It's a tough problem, but the only way to fix it is to basically follow the cat when they go and scoop immediately.

I have heard that putting a layer of Feline Pine on the bottom of you littler box and then adding your normal litter, helps with the smell. I have not done this as our "stinky" cat seems to be occasional. I like to keep a container of baking soda mixed with essential oil, near the litter box (container with a lid that has holes punched in it). I feel that helps absorb the smell and keep things fresh. Good Luck! I sympathize with "Stinky Cat syndrome"

I am very sensitive to cat urine odor. I have tried every litter out there. I no longer use the clumping litter and have switched to Feline Pine. It masks the order very well. You still have to scoop it out once or twice a day.....whenever they go. It's flushable so it is very convenient. I have used it for years.

Try mixing in a box of baking soda every time you change the box. And if your using the clumping litter, you still need to change the box because if those clumps break up they smell worse then if you were using clay litter.

Have you had your cat to the vet lately? Perhaps there is a medical issue with his kidneys. What kind of food to you give him? When mine doesn't drink as much her urine gets a bit strong.

I use the Special Kitty from Walmart that clumps and is like beach sand. There is very little odor.

Good luck to you.

Sorry, but the only suggestion I have (and the one thing that works for us) is scoop SEVERAL TIMES A DAY!!!! I've had several people come in and comment that they never even knew we had cats because there's no odor.

I keep a small trash can near the litter box lined with a plastic shopping bag (just from walmart or grocery store); scoop and then put that bag into our larger trash can we have in the kitchen.

Probably not what you wanted to hear, but we've never had a problem with odor.

Maybe try one of those automatic air fresheners that "spritzes" when someone walks by or every 30 minutes - I forget exactly how they work. I actually have one of those in my family room just because they smell good.

Good luck!!

Maybe you should try changing his food. As cats get older so does their digestive. You can try different types to see if that helps. I know it did for my parents cat.

We use Tidy Cats Instant Action litter. We have tried sooo many different ones and this one is the best. We scoop it every other day and sometimes every day if it's especially stinky.

I like to use Lysol for the smell. It takes care of any odor and it sanitizes too which I like. It works better than Febreeze if you ask me.

Wash out your litter box and dry it. Then take a cooking oil like olive oil or canola oil and rub it all over the litter box. The oil will keep the clumps of litter from sticking to the bottom of the litter box and stinking.

I found Arm & Hammer litter to be the best at controlling odor along with the Arm & Hammer litter sprinkle. I personally use SWheat Scoop, but we don't have smelly cats.

Put the litter box in another box. We have our covered litter box inside a large plastic container with a hole cut in it. That helps to contain the smell. We do that for allergy reasons.

Scoop at least twice a day!

I also wipe out the top of the litter box cover with Odo Ban (from Sam's Club or Walmart). That definitely kills litter box smells!

Good luck!

Have you tried Feline Pine litter, not the clumping one the pellets. I had used it for my cats (when I had them) and I never had the urine smell. It would stink if the pooped but I would flush it soon after they went. I also kept the litter box in the bathroom so the rest of the house wouldn’t smell.

The only down side was having to change it every week, but I would also wash out the pan with soap and water so that there was no lingering odors. You could try some Simple Solution Extreme spray to eliminate the odor all together, they sell it at Pet Smart.

I have to agree with Purple Mom's suggestion of cleaning it multiple times a day if possible. We use the "Worlds Best Cat Litter" made from corn, and this works well, but I think we'll have the same problem soon...:(
