Six Month Old Sucks on Her Shirt

Hi! I have a very happy six month old baby who pacifies herself by sucking on her shirt. She puts her thumb up under the top and then sticks the thumb and shirt in her mouth. Her shirt is almost always wet, I change her shirt probably every 2-3 hours! She is getting a rash where her skin is always wet. I tried giving her a little wash cloth to suck on instead of her shirt, which sometimes works but didn't know if there was a toy or something out there perhaps she would like better? Anyone have any ideas or had this problem?

What can I do next?

My son did this, and got a terrible rash. I put a terry cloth bib on him, and changed out the bibs. He would suck on the bib instead of his shirt. No more rashes!

I use a bib for my son (8 months) and he likes that. Not the terry one though, he likes the texture of the carter's drool bibs better.

Good luck!

Chances are, she is teething and her gums itch. With teething come more acidic saliva and more of it, hence the rash. I would try textured teething toys (some of which are cloth) or possibly brushing her gums.

At that age my daughter's shirts were always wet too (she was teething). We treated her rash with lotion and, if really bad, hydrocortisone cream. There was a while there where I used bibs which helped alot. I bought drool bibs but they really are not worth the expense. Just use a normal cotton bib.

I have a friend that her twins did this, She used bandanas around their necks.. They were allergic to their own saliva!

She had the bandanas in all colors, pink, yellow, green blue and red.

She just kept a stack of them..

It helped a lot. They also looked so cute.

Oh, poor thing (about the rash)! If it weren't for the rash, I would say don't worry about it and that it's nice that she found something to comfort her.

Have you tried putting 2 shirts on her? If you did that, do you think she would only suck on the top one?

Could you put lotion on her chest kind of like a barrier to keep the wetness from irritating her skin?

I'm also wondering if she's teething. Although, some kids simply like to suck or chew on something.

Good luck!

Put a bib on her. The terrycloth ones will work best.

There are hundreds of teethers out there, but she might not take to any of them if the shirt is what she likes best. My daughter really liked Super Yummy from Discovery Toys (PM me for info on how to get it) and lots of people like Sophie the Giraffe (my daughter didn't love it though).

You could also look into getting (or making if you sew) a Taggies brand blanket. My mom made one for each of my kids and they LOVE them. http://www.kidsii.com/taggies/

Will she take a pacifier? Getting rid of that is a lot easier when they're older than a thumb.
