This site was so helpful that I decided to seek advice once again however this time it is regarding my sons "teething". Just seeking some tips for teething. So far I have tried massaging his gums with my finger, cold teethers, and just last night we bought some "teething" gel but it did not seem to work. I suggested to him to get Orajel but he bought this stuff instead. It says on the tube: Homeopathic Sympotmatic Relief for Irritability and Restlessness due to teething 100% natural and no side effects. I put a little bit on my gums but it really didnt seem like any difference, perhaps orajel will be different?? So far he pretty much sucks everything from his fingers, fist, blanket, my fingers...so far he is not liking the frozen teethers.(not sure why) Perhaps he is just not used to them. He is getting better though. He is getting irritable lately. Another question I have is, do teeth always come in on the bottom? Top? How many come in? 1or2 at a time? You would think I would know this stuff but I dont. I pretty much read everything regarding baby stuff except this.... tips please!

What can I do next?

my son got his at 3 mos. He LOVED it when I would put his binky in the freezer long enough to get it really cold. It would soothe his swollen sore gums.

Hello K.. When my son was teething he was actually ok. But when he did get cranky I would put a wet wash cloth in the fridge for a couple of minutes and then let him suck on it. It worked wonders. My son also got his teeth all at the same time. He first got his two front teeth and then he got his bottom ones. So it all depends. Good luck and I hope I helped a little.

Cold teething rings are great, I don't think you should freeze it though, it might hurt his gums. You might try letting him chew on a wet washcloth, my daughter loves that. Don't be afraid to use Tylenol or Motrin, sometimes they really need it.

I've heard that they usually come in on the bottom first, and usually in pairs. That's how it has been for my daughter with all 6 of her teeth. I'm sure it varies from child to child.

Teething stinks! I hope they come through quick!

I use Gentle Naturals Homeopathic Teething Drops and they worked great for my daughter. You can buy them at Target, Walgreens and CVS. My daughter also liked to chew on a cold wash rag. I would get them wet and stick it in the freezer for about five minutes and she loved chewing on them. She also like the vibrating teethers. Her favorite looked like a rattle with a big yellow star on the top that vibrated. She still likes chewing on this one and she is 15 months. Good Luck.

I would also recommend the teething tablets. I didn't hear about them until our 2nd baby and it made a world of difference in how well she slept at night while she was teething. Wish I would have known with my 1st baby.

This is just our experience... Both my girls HATED orajel. They would cry and cry. Tylenol we used just if it was excessively bad or they couldn't sleep. Teething rings work some. Rubbing gums worked some. I've heard frozen green beans work well for the molars when they get older... Nursing was the thing that worked the best. Both of them nursed alot when they were teething. Our girls had bottom teeth come in about 2 at a time (one right after another)... seems like I had something else but I can't remember what...

Dear K., make sure everything is clean; so he is O,K when he's 'gumming' on them. His fingers/hands/toes are great. Usually the 2 at the bottom show up first but whatever.
I know you adore your new blessing but remember Daddy since you were his Wife-first. Thay often fell they don't matter and sometimes stray at this point.

The teething tablets were the only thing that worked with my son...he would scream when we tried orajel or baby anbesol, and he hated anything really cold. Target carries them, I don't know if anyone else does.

The only thing that worked for my daughter was a cold toothbrush. I'd just get it a tiny bit wet and put it in the fridge to cool off. She loved the plastic because she could bite on it really hard and the bristles because they soothed the inflammation. Good luck!

If its being cranky I would give him the Hylands teething tablets they work wonders. It helps with the soothing and pain. As for the sucking everything in site, and wetting everything its normal. I got my son a teddy with the teething things on it. I would becareful giving him the orajel as it numbs the throat and make it harder for him to swallow.

Pm me with any questions or concerns.

Hi K.,

My son got his first teeth on the bottom, one came in and immediately after it was up another one came in right beside it. I think bottoms first then the 2 right above them come in, but nothing always holds true.

What works for us is a wet washcloth. It's great for him to gnaw on. I've also heard a frozen cucumber works well.

I think the problem with frozen teethers is that they are too cold to hold, plus its hardness can't feel nice on sore bare gums.

Something you may also want to keep in mind is that babies seem to want to sleep more when they're teething. So when he's fussy what may work best is to just put him down for a little nap.

Good luck!

Orajel is very numbing and can actually cause a baby to choke (on their numb tongue, I think). It is hard to get it in the right place. I had great results with teething tablets (Little Remedies). You can get them at Babies R Us, WalMart, Target, etc. Otherwise, it just sucks. It won't be as bad with subsequent teeth, except that the top two front teeth are usually the worst. For those, my son chewed on the teething tablet bottle. :)

The order they come in varies per child.

GET THE BABY ORAJEL!!!!!! My son hated the taste of it but it worked. Now he'll open his mouth for me. Teeth normally come in two on bottom then 2 on top. May come in one at a time or two at a time. It just all depends. It's a long battle believe me. Your son will have really bad days and others where his teeth don't bother him at all. Get the orajel and whatever he can chew on. I tried a cold wash rag but my son didn't like them all that much. Get some teething rings, the hard ones. Those worked good for me. Hope this helps.

Hi there! I had really good luck with teething tablets. They're a homeopathic option that helps with pain, irritability, wakefullness, etc. I'll admit I was nervous to use them at first, because I didn't know much about homeopathic cures, but nothing else I had tried worked (oragel, teething rings, etc) especially at night when she was trying to sleep. These worked miraculously well! A friend had reccommended them to me and I'm so thankful she did. I had a bit of a hard time finding them at first and they may have moved them now, but the last time I bought them, Walmart had them in the Pharmacy section and Walgreens had them in their baby section. They're a tiny white bottle and I've seen two different brands and both worked the same for me. One brand I remember is "Humphrey's" but I can't recall the other one right now. As far as how many teeth at a time and if they're top or bottom, I think every child is different. Not to scare you but my daughter always got teeth 2-3 at a time and one time, she was cutting 7 at once...that was a long couple months before they all came in. However, most people I know say their kids got them 1-2 at a time. Don't feel bad that you don't know this stuff, I don't think many first time moms do. I know I didn't and I think I read every possible book out there on babies. The only reason I know is because my daughter is 2 1/2 now so I'm finally done with teething! Just know the molars are the worst for them (at least in my experience they were) and they take the longest to get all the way in. Good luck and enjoy that baby!

Normally babies get their top two middle teeth and then the bottom two and then the two on either side. However, any order is possible. My middle son got his teeth in the craziest order. He got one on the bottom, then one on the top (on the other side) then he got the side teeth. Anyway, the doctor said don't worry about it and his teeth are fine.
As far as the teething I think it does get a little easier with each tooth. I am not sure if it is because it hurts less or babies don't pay as much attention to it. Things change so much as to what is acceptable to do for babies but when mine were teething I gave them tylenol. I remember trying all the ideas but don't remember any "magic" cure. The main thing I can tell you is that it will get better. I am the mother of three; the youngest is 15.
