I have heard applying a dab of wiskey on the gums while teething is helpful. Does anybody know anything about this? I have been using orajel but it makes its' way to my baby's tongue and he hates this. My mom says she used to rub a little wiskey and that helped but my husband is completely against and I just don't know....any wisdom?

What can I do next?

My mom put wiskey on my son's gums when nothing else would work. The result was immediate relief. It didn't take much either. She just dipped her finger in the wiskey and rubbed it on his gums. It's not something I'll use every day but when nothing else is working I'll definately do it again.

I would not use teething tablets. They have belladonna in them which is a wild berry that in history has been used as poison. I know it says it is a small amount but look on the bottle it isn't regulated by the Food and Drug Administration like normal drugs like tylenol and such. Therefore the company can do whatever they want when making the medicine and you never know just how much belladonna end up in a tablet. I wouldn't risk it. Belladonna is a very dangerous herb and commonly called deadly nightshade.

For my kids I did what everyone else has suggested except the tablets, whiskey and the water. I might add that as they got a bit older and could grasp things I gave them big tootsie rolls to gnaw on and watched them carefully. I also alternated tylenol and motrin every 2-3 hrs. Good Luck and take care!

When my daughter was teething, I gave her some Hyland's Homeopathic Teething Tablets. You can get them at Walmart or Walgreens, CVS places like that. They work really well and they are really small. I would recommend NOT using orajel, even though it reduces the swelling in the gums, it makes the gums harder and therefore makes the teething process harder. Hope that helps. On the tablets, you get a bottle of 125 tablets for about $6. GOOD LUCK!

I have 3 boys that are 3 5 and 7, so I have been through the teething thing several times. My mom used to tell me to try the whiskey also, but I never could bring myself to do that. I always found that if you rub an ice cube on their gums really helped. That seemed to help especially before feedings so that they would be more willing to eat. Also, wash clothes always helped with my kids becasue of the rough texture, even putting them in the frezzer for a minute or under cold water. I hope this helps.

Hey L.,

My baby is 5 months also. She has two teeth and is miserable sometimes. I would give him tylenol for the pain. Sometimes I follow with a little orajel, but she really likes sucking on ice tied up in a baby sock. Wet washclothes are also great. I heard there is a teething mesh bag where you can put frozen bananas in and let your baby gum them. I have seen the teething bag at Toy R Us and Walmart.

Good luck,
R.

I have a 2 month old who started teething and I asked her pediatrician about what I should do. I just thought Orajel would do the trick but he told me not to use that; he told me to use Gripe Water. I've been using it and it works really well. It soothes babys gums and it's also great to use for everything else.

whiskey is a wonderful thing. orajel toughens up the gums and makes it harder for the teeth to come out. whiskey (jack daniels) gets the job done and it doesnt take alot. it gives instant relief. also the tablets work but not for long. the best thing to do is to try it all yourself. i couldnt stand orajel. jack in large amounts ia bad for the baby but noone is telling you to let him suck on a fifth. so dont panic. and enjoy the silence it brings to the house.

Well whiskey can help but I would stick with orajel and motrin. If those dont help the whiskey wont either. I read a response about the teething bag, Just wanted to add that that thing makes a huge mess. i used to take a baby wash cloth and wet one corner freeze it and let him chew on that my kids seemed to like that better than any store bought teether.

Hi L. J.
I work in pediatrics and we recommend using oragel and Tylenol for pain. Maybe you can use a smaller amount of oragel and right after give him tylenol so he doesn't taste it as much. You can also use a cool teething ring. I hope this helps.

Ha! I love the old remedies like that...or at least, I love the idea that they were used but I'd never use whiskey with my kids! For teething - I use the Teething Tablets. They are located next to the Orajel and stuff but they work waaayyy better. Orajel did nothing for my munchkins but it only takes 1 of these tiny little pills and the fussiness ended. I'm not sure how they work but I asked my doctor if they were safe and good and he said they were fine. They are homeopathic and called "Hyland's Teething Tablets"

You should NOT use whiskey. It is alcohol. It helps b/c of that. But orajel, cold washclothes, massaging the gums. That all help too :)

Just give your baby tylenol. I would never recommend giving any amount of alcohol to a baby that size, even though we've all heard these "tales" from our mothers or grandmothers. Tylenol will get rid of pain, and just give your baby the recommended dose however often he needs it.

I'm surprised all the other posts didn't mention this, so I'm doing so now.

When my son started teething, I was at a loss. The doctor said Orajel, his gums got so hard that his teeth didn't come in til after he was a year and a half old. *boggle*

My mother-in-law said whiskey, but my husband wouldn't allow me to do it, considering the addiction that it promotes.

Well, I did the next best thing. Take a clean washcloth, put some cold water on it, and place it in the freezer for maybe an hour. Then let baby chew on it. Once baby gets tired of the cold, any type of teething toy would work, especially a small rubber bottle that's found at Burlington in the baby depot area. It's a rattle and a pacifier and teething ring in one. Alternating between the two is what worked for my son. And remember, my son was teething for over 9 months of his life. Good luck L.!

i have to agree with your husband: talk to your doctor and see if he/she can suggest something more natural for your baby. try a wet, clean washcloth that has been put in the freezer for a bit... your son can chew on it and the cold will numb the spot. you could also get some freezing teether rings.

Oragel is horrible for babies!!! It can permanently damage them. I used teething tablets by Highland's. They come in a clear tube with a pink and blue label. They are the size of saccharin and are quick dissolve with little flavor. You can get them at any major drugstore or grocery store. Hope this helps!

Well, it has been a while since my kids are already grown but they had teething toys back in Germany that could be refriderated or heated to soothe the gums. I am sure that by now they are available here as well. My daughter liked the teething ring/Schnullie cold, my son liked it warm ... guess it depends on the child ...

I don't know about the whiskey but there is an AWESOME product on the market that is homeopathic and is called Humphrey's Teething Pellets No 3 -- I found them at Walgreens and their online store has them as well. They are little miracle pellets. They are like a small (tiny)round ball of stuff that you give the baby in their mouth and they dissolve. They do have some sugar in them so they are sweet to the taste so I never had any trouble getting my little girl to take them -- they help with the pain as well as with the wakefulness and irritablity.

No way would I apply alcohol of any kind to the gums. Nor would I use Orajel. I do use the teething tablets sparingly, but I understand the concern for the ingredients.

If you are breastfeeding, I recommend that you comfort your baby with that as often as he/she would like.

Hi, my mom used to do this to me too. But, just because our moms used to do things doesn't mean that they should be done ;-) ! I would stick to the orajel (which I knwn it horrid, and hard to put on), or a little tylenol if he has a temperature, or is really suffering. But alcohol is bad for a baby, no matter how small the amount. You wouldn't drink whiskey when you were 9 months pregnant, so why give it to him now... I hope I don't sound condescending, it's just my opinion.

My parents used whiskey on my gums when I was teething. I am now 31 and have been in recovery for alcoholism for 3.5 years. I don't know that there's an actual connection between the two, but I'd speculate that it's not worth the risk.

My baby preferred the Little Teethers brand. Popsicles are also great.

We always had a lot of luck with those little white tablets that would melt on the tongue. They are very very little but seemed to do the trick. Every friend I have that has ever had a teething baby has used these and liked them. They are on the shelve (at like HEB) right next to the orajel. Good Luck!

You should definitely NOT give whisky or alcohol of any sort to a baby!!! Consuming alcohol while pregnant is not good for the fetus, so how could it possibly be good for a 5-month-old baby even if it's just a little? There are tons of other things you could give your baby. Like a cold teether for him to gnaw on. There is also a teething gel from a company called Hyland's and it's homeopathic, so there are no side effects whatsoever. I've seen it sold at Walgreens and Whole Foods and sometimes regular grocery stores like HEB. I know he's probably really fussy and cranky and you get frustrated, but just take it easy because it will pass eventually (and then of course return again when another tooth is coming!)

Hi L.,

As my twins have gone thru the different teething stages, Hyland's Homeopathic Teething Tablets and Baby Tylenol were great! We're working on the eye teeth now. My son's favorite thing to chew on has been a tooth brush. Becasue he can get it back there in his little molars, it felt great to him. He also likes the nobby ended tooth bruch out of the baby's gum care kit. My daughter has had an easier time with her teeth than her brother.

Congratulations on your little prince!

Hi L.,
I remember taking a sip of alkohol (after my dad suggested it),
When my tooth was hurting. It works, but i also remember ,that after a couple of minutes it wore off. So logically that means, that you wou;d have to do it more often, and the amount of alkohol , that would go into your baby's bloodstream wouldn't be so good. So find something that has a longer effect
please.
I think, it's funny how you say,the orajel bothers his tongue. well,
What is better the tooth or the tongue?
