Hi, I'm trying to locate a good pre-school for my 3 year old. I'm looking to enroll him summer part time. Please provide the names of any schools in Lakewood or Long Beach. Thanks!

Hello T.,

Riviera PlaySchool in south Redondo Beach would be the perfect place for your children to thrive. They offer a play-based academic environment that combines stations of discovery with a structured daily curriculuum, and all of the teachers are trained in the newest methods of providing social and emotional support to the children.

Kids graduating from Riviera PlaySchool are better prepared for the social and academic demands of kindergarten and first grade.

A new preschool is opening in Long Beach - Bixby Knolls area - Little Owl Preschool. We plan on sending our 2 year old there in the fall. They are supposed to open in March. They've had some "workshops" for the kids over the last few months - art projects with "nature", ice play with salt and watercolors. You should check them http://littleowlpreschool.com/ out.

A fabulous school right on the border of Lakewood and Long Beach is located at Lakewood first Baptist church. My kids went there and loved it. The staff is wonderful and the program just the balance of academics and just fun. I don't know if they offer summer programs, but you can check out their web site. http://www.lakewoodchristianschools.org/

A school that I'm pretty sure does offer summer classes and a great environment is Mayflower preschool, just off the 605 fwy slightly west of long beach. My sisters kids went there and they have a very popular program. It's a little outside your target area, but worth the drive. http://mayflowerpreschoollosalamitos.com/

Best of luck to you!

Happy New Year! I wanted to recommend to you Christ Lutheran Preschool in Long Beach. They're located on Stearns between Palo Verde and Studebaker. They have full and half day programs for infants through pre-k. They also have a wonderful summer program. The teachers are loving and have a great balance between social, emotional, physical, spiritual and academic development. It is a wonderful preschool!!!

During the summer, the El Dorado Nature Center has week-long Super Science classes that run for an hour and a half. Because classes are short, it's a great introduction for children who aren't quite ready for traditional preschool hours. Much of the learning takes place outside (the classroom is surrounded by grasslands, forests, ponds, and winding trails.) There's lots of the usual singing, stories, crafts, and whatnot, but the children also get to go on bug hunts, build fairy houses, make mud pies and all sorts of other fun outdoorsy things. They have classes during the school year, except they just meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays (you can sign up by going to the City of Long Beach Parks and Recreation RecConnect website. The program is called Preschool in Nature.)
