Seeking Counselor or Clinical Psychologist in Oak Park or Chicago Area

Hello Moms!
I've been feeling really down and sad lately and my midwife suspects a mild depression. I'm 6 months pregnant and she feels I should see somebody about that, especially as I might be more at risk for postpartum depression. I need some names of counselors or psychologists, since all the referrals I got so far don't participate in my health insurance plan. So if you know anybody, I would be grateful for the info, if you know anybody that accepts Aetna HMO, that's even better! Thanks in advance!
J.

Thank you everyone for the great advice, tips and encouragement! I now have a list of counselors that work with my insurance and I've made an appointment already. Again, thanks so much!

I suffered from depression as I went through 4 failed rounds of IVF. I also developed "postpardum anxiety" after our daughter was born. Starting the search for a professional is daunting, as is entering counceling for the first time... unfortunately there is still a "stigma" attached. I personally think everyone would benefit from it, and sure beats just "waiting it out". You are not alone and I commend you for taking action!!!

If you don't like the first councelor you meet, don't give up. Just like relationships in general, there are certain people you click with, others you don't. Take some time and find someone you like who you feel listens! You should feel like you are talking to a good friend.

I can personally recommend Lori Demain in Oak Park. Not sure of her insurances, but she has experience with parenting concerns and is a mother of twins. Lori Demain ###-###-####

Much luck to you, and feel free to email me with questions, etc!

Hi J.,

I would recommend a womderful woman named Nona Rutter. She is at 7442 West Madison #6 in Forest Park. Her number is: ###-###-####. I went to her a few years ago when she was on Belmont in Chicago. I don't know what her insurance situation is but I'm sure she would be glad to give you that information. If you go to her, tell her L. said Hello.

Good Luck,
L.

Hi J.,

It is so great that you are being proactive and seeking some support. I don't have a specific name for you in the city, but have you asked your OB's office for a name. They would likely take your insurance then. When you start up with someone, if it doesn't feel like a good fit after the first couple weeks (you don't feel all that comfortable with them) don't feel you shouldn't try someone else. Sometimes finding a person who you feel comfortable talking to does not happen on the first try. If you are in a not so great fit situation, you can even ask that support person for some names of another person. I know that seems weird, but we are taught in our training that a theraputic relationship is one of the most important things in therapy. So we feel if the relationship is not working with us, it is most important for our client to be with someone else where it will work.

Good luck. I hope you get some names in the city or Oak Park. Sorry I can't be of more help, but the other professionals I know are in the Northbrook area where I work.

Hi J.!

I don't know your situation, but I had a similar problem and found a psychologist through my husbands work. They have an Employee Assistance Program ( I found that most companies do). The program offers assistance in many areas. I contacted them and was referred to what they call ComPsych, who in turn helped me to find a psychologist that works with our insurance. All I have to come up with is the copay on each visit. Don't know if this helps or not, but good luck!

I know Dr. Heidi Schwartz. She used to be located in Oak Park, right downtown by the Shaker building. I talked with her over 5 years ago, and she was very helpful.
