Seeking Advice Regarding Comunication with an Unresponsive School Teacher.

Some time ago I sent a request regarding kids with ADHD. Both the teacher and the school principal had "decided" my son is an ADHD child and were pressing very hard to put him into medication. Thanks to all your responses I was able to do an indeep research regarding the disorder as well as my son's rights at school. I went to school and showed the principal the results of my investigation and her attitude changed completely however, although she promised to talk to the teacher and help me I still haven't been able to comunicate with my son's teacher at all. I have an email address he distributed as his preferred comunication method. I sent him a couple of emails asking for information regarding his teaching methods as well as his observations in respect of my son's development at school. It's been a month already and I still can't get a response from this guy and I think I have the right to be treated with respect and by ignoring me he's just being disrespectful.
I wish I could help my son and I've always believed that comunication between home and school constitute an important part of success at shool more so in the case of an hiperactive boy like mine. How am I supposed to deal with this?
Is there a place for me to file a complaint?
Please help,

Thanks

Parents should not have to beg for a conference to discuss their child. I am also a teacher and communication between school and home is very important. However, when it is only one sided, you do need to move past the teacher. I would pass on emailing the teacher anymore. At this point, you should contact the principal again. I would CC the teacher. A parent/teacher/principal conference is necessary and these issues need to be addressed. Keep records of the emails and any phone calls made to the school. This will only make your case stronger.
If you are not satisfied with the results of the conference, or the meeting does not transpire in a reasonable time frame, make an appointment with the superintendent. I would advise you to go through the chain of command first and let the principal know that you are not satisfied with the way things have been handled. Changes will happen, but you do need to allow the principal another chance to help you. Again, if you feel that the principal is nonresponsive, go directly to the superintendent and then the school board.

I wish more parents were proactive about their children. Best of luck.

As a teacher, let me tell you my view. Please don't go directly to the board. Use that as a last resort. There is nothing more disheartening to a teacher or principal than someone that goes right to the top without trying intermediaries first.
Contact the principal and set up a conference with you and the principal and the teacher. Hopefully then you can hammer out some of the concerns in person. If for some reason, they are reluctant to give you the time you deserve, then contact the superintendent. If all else fails, then contact the board.
Sometimes teachers fear confrontation with parents. Try to make them understand that you want to work together to find the best means to educate your child.
Good luck!

Make an appointment to see the principal and the teacher. I am wondering why they are cooling off so quickly after pushing you to medicate your child. Hmmmm, maybe they are smelling TROUBLE? I am so proud of you. GOOD JOB MOM!!!!! Keep us posted:)

you should be able to file a complaint through the school board. but perhaps you should call and schedule an appointment to meet with this teacher and the principle face to face. I don't think that email is an appropriate means of communication for this situation. I don't think that the teacher could possibly ignore a scheduled meeting (or the principal) but if he/she still does not respond to your requests... then I would definetly file a complaint and change schools as soon as possible. A school that operates like that obviously is not equipped to deal with children with learning issues and your son would be better served elsewhere. good luck!

I am a teacher and it upset me to hear such stories. There a process to go through before determining if a child has ADHD it is not something taken lightly. It is not something a teacher would diagnose without seeing proper testing and documentation. I suggest you email the teacher your previous email along with your new request and send CC the whole thing to the principal. If you don't get a call within 24 hours go to the principal. Some teachers respond quicker when they know the principal is involved. Good Luck

Hi V.,

I had sent out for advice on this same topic. I am going thru the same problems that you are with my 9yr old Boy. The teacher is just so ?????. She is very rude and I just never can communicate with her. She also said to me very early in the school year that my son had to see his doctor to get some medication because he had behavior problems. Which I strongly disagree with her. My son is a good boy and I am not saying these because he is my son he is. Can you please call me so we can talk some more there is allot of questions that I have. I was not able to get any kind of responce from no one. She is going to fail my son because I didn’t agree with her on getting my son to take that medication. My number is ###-###-#### or at work ###-###-#### calls me at 11:50 (Lunch Break). Thank you.

Hi,

Is there a Board of education for this school dist that both of your children attend. My daughter had problems within her school (not ADHD) but I to had a huge problem with one of her teachers in particular. I went straight to the board show them proof of me send emails and phone calls, next day I had everything taken care of. Sometimes it helps to step on toes.
