Seeking Advice on Digital Camera for a 5 y.o. Boy

My child would like Santa to bring him a digital camera for Christmas. I am willing to do this, but not sure what to buy. I need something really sturdy (dropable), easy to use, and inexpensive (maybe $100 or less?). Oh, and takes decent pictures :-) I know that Fisher Price makes a good pre-school one, but I think my child will reject it as "too babyish" because it's huge and plastic. (I know that's rediculous b/c he's only 5, but I don't want to pay for something he won't use!) Please advise. Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for all of your input! I have not yet decided which camera to buy, but I have found some decent review sites on the internet. Unfortunately, the one camera that seems to be everyone's favorite is pink and has Hello Kitty on it :-) My kid would freak because he is trying to differentiate himself from his baby sister, so all things pink and "girly" are a no go. So if I can find the "boy" version of that camera, I'll be all set. Geez, why can't they just make a design that's gender neutral???? The prices have really come down a lot in the past year, so I'm hoping I don't need to spend as much as I originally thought.

I just posted the same question last week - seeking advice on the Kid tough cameras, and have read all the reviews about a few products... I decided to go with the Kid tough waterproof camera. I also got it from Target and it was on sell for $38, I didn't see it anywhere cheaper - so I bought it from there.,

S., fisher price makes a "kid tough" digital camera that can be dropped and is water proof too! you could probably find one online, or at any major retail store (especially during these holiday times). i am pretty sure there priced at around 50$- or less. my son could use one himself too. good luck!

Get a Kodak Easy Share. Even the cheapest one takes great pictures and my five and eight year old neices both use their Moms without any problems at all.

My daughters (10 and 5) both have the fisher price cameras. I don't think the picture quality is necessarily "garbage" but it's comparable to the quality of a phone camera when printed. My mom has a pretty expensive camera phone and her pixs are more bitmapped than the ones my daughters take. Guess it's pretty subjective in that regard.

Moreover, my 10 year old dropped my Kodak Sure Shot the first and only time she held it, which I got on sale the day after Thanksgiving for $88, and it broke. She has dropped this other camera, left it in the sun and in the hot car - it seems to take a licking and keeps on ticking.

Both are able to download their cameras and operate them independently - which is what I had intended. Overall, I am pretty happy.

I didn't know they were being discontinued. :(

Here are some links you might want to check out.

This is capable of taking both video as well as still pictures, the same one in black is twice as much.

I know you said you did not think he would want fisher pirce, but this is water proof.

This may be more of what you want.

My girls are 11 & 13, and have had cheap cameras for as long as I can remember. They use them, they break them, they want something newer and better. I think that it is great that you get him interested in this early. Unfortunately for you there are not as many options for boys as there are for girls. Buy what you think he will get the most use out of. Do not spend too much, so that you re not disapointed if he does not use it as much as you would think. Remember that it is the thought that counts.

Hi S., I bought my sons' first camera when he was 4. It was a camera that was in an Avon book. It is a digital camera, has all the features, usb port for transfering pics to the computer. It basically has everything that an adult camera has.. I sell Avon, if you want one, you can go to www.avon.com. If you don't find one there, let me know.
