Seeking the Best SLR Camera

I've looked into the Nikon D40 and the Cannon Rebel. Does anyone have either of these and/or have you done any research on higher end digital cameras? Pros and Cons? I'm hoping to have it in time for some great Christmas photos and looking to spend between $650.00 and $750.00.

So What Happened?

Thanks so much to those of you who responded about getting a new SLR camera. I placed my order this weekend for the Canon Rebel XSI and I can't wait for it to arrive! I knew I couldn't go wrong with either, but chose the Canon because of the option to use the display screen to take pics as well as the view finder!
Thanks again!

I have that same camera, the Cannon Rebel XSI. I have really enjoyed it and am still learning on it. One thing that really helps with indoor shots is a flash filter, I believe its called a "Puffer"? Its about $20 and fits over the built in flash, it makes a difference, totally worth it. I pocked mine up at Wolfe Camera.

Canon and Nikon are pretty equal for their quality. It depends on the lens you use, and how fast it is - (low light conditions).

The new Nikon D90 is the first digital S3R with video! Dang, I should have waited, just what I always wanted.

My entire family has the Canon Rebel with no problems. We have had ours for over 5 years and just did pictures of the kids. I had them printed at Walgreens.com and they look professional. One added benefit is that you can buy Tamiron lenses for the Canon and they are about half the price of the canon lenses. However, my sister-in-law got the Nikon D40 last January and has had major problems with delay and not taking pictures.

hi E.,
how are you? i am a professional photographer and my film camera's are Nikon, but my digital is a Canon D10 (more camera than you need). i always tell people wanting to get a camera to get the Canon Rebel...its wonderful and acts like any SLR, great for the price. stay away from any digital sure-shot type camera they are expensive and render mediocre results. all the manual's are automatic too, so you don't need to be a tech head to get great results.
best of luck,
R.

Well, I see you chose the canon! Good call. I have a Rebel and LOVE it!! I had a film Rebel so all my lenses fit on the digital. The puffer that a previous responder suggested can be found at http://garyfonginc.com/index.html. It really helps and makes pictures look more like portraits. For the "professional" in all of us so a lot less money! Happy picture taking!

I know I'm a little late, but I've got an article that my husband wrote, if it will help: http://titusbartos.com/inside/recommend/

This article details many of the most popular cameras on the market, from beginner to pro. He gives price ranges, recommendations on lenses and other accessories, and the best places to shop.

We just started a photography studio, Made in Murfreesboro Photography (MadeinMurfreesboro.com), and my husband, Titus, owns a Nikon D70 and D300. He is currently teaching a photography class at RTA (Rutherford Tutorial Academy). If you have any further questions, just ask me or post on his website and he'd be more than happy to help you out.

You can also check out his photoblog at: TheObviousPhoto.com
You can see what kind of shots you can take with the D70 and D300, and with the lenses that he has.

Hope this helps! Merry Christmas!

I have a Nikon D50 which they don't make any more. I LOVE IT! We use it all the time. It takes great pictures. You definitely want to get a digital SLR. It takes pictures instantly, so you're much less likely to miss a shot because someone turns their head. The quality is awesome. It's the convenienve of digital- you only print what you want and delete what you don't want. I have had Nikons for years, so I'm partial to Nikons. I know folks that have the Canon as well. You probably can't go wrong either way. Good luck- and enjoy it!

I personally like the Canon Rebel. I have a Rebel SLR and my brother and sister in laws have the Canon digital Rebel and they love it as well. It does good taking closely spaced or timed shots. Easy to operate. If you have an SLR camera you may be able to trade it into a camera shop against a digital Camera or it may be cheaper to check out Sam's Club or Costco. Good luck. Digital is the way to go now days as you only have to print the shots you like and you can take as many as you want and just delete the ones you do not like instead of having to develop them. B. E

I got the cannon rebel xsi a few months ago, and I absolutely love it...it takes a great picture, its not too heavy/bulky and its easy to use. Im sure either of them would take a great photo, but speaking from expirience-I'd go with the cannon :)

I don't know much about the Canon Rebel, but I do own two Nikon D100's. From what I have read, the D40 is a good camera, but the lenses are not interchangeable with other Nikon models. My son and daughter-in-law have a D70, which I believe is in the same price range as what you mentioned. More lenses will be available for you to use. I think you would be happier with that purchase if you plan to do much. The D80 has some nice features, but may be just a bit above your price range. Check www.bhphoto.com for good prices; that's where I have bought my cameras and lenses. Good luck!

From all of the research I've done, it is more of personal preference and you can't go wrong with either. More things come standard with the canon (like the software for your computer). We just got the Canon XSI and we got it from Wolf/Ritz camera instead of online. It was a little cheaper at amazon, but they offer so much more there, include 18 free 2-hour classes with the purchase of the camera. I got the camera for my husband and he's really enjoyed taking the classes. I went with the canon b/c we have family members with the canon, so the parts are more interchangeable.

My husband's comments:
-The only canon that has the ISO is the xsi.
-Canon tends to be cheaper.
-Better image ratio quality

My daughter-in-law has the Nikon D50 and the pictures she takes are incredible. She loves it! It's not available anymore, but the D40 was developed to replace it. I'm planning to get it when I have the funds. From what I've seen, the pictures and the ease of use are amazing.

Hi. I am a hobby photographer, and I LOVE my Canon Rebel XLT. I worked in the IT Department of a Naval Hospital where my husband was stationed, and all of the self-proclaimed "Techy-Geek" guys swore by the Rebel. I bought mine when we were still at that base-Keflavik, Iceland-and it was the best purchase I ever made. Not only do I have the most amazing pictures of our lives there, but now I can really get some excellent shots with my camera of our kids growing here. I highly reccommend the Canon Rebel to you!

We have the Canon Rebel. You almost can't help but take good pictures with it. It's easy enough for the basic photographer and seems to have enough features for someone who wants something more advanced. We love ours!

I've got the Canon Rebel Xti and it's great for action photos - I got a great zoom lens to go with it and I love it! I've had it for about 2 years and had no problems at all. I will admit I don't know how to use all the functions, make adjustments for certain lighting, etc., but it works for what I need so far! I also got Adobe Photoshop on my computer to help edit the pic's. You can send them off to many places for printing right from your computer.

I don't know about those models in particular but I have a Nikon and the delay stinks. I am sure the more money you spend the better but I have heard several ppl say Cannon is better.
