School Dress Code

My daughter is starting Kindergarten this month and she already has a TON of clothes. The problem is that her school requires that shorts be at the fingertip and shirt straps be 2" thick. I know that all of her shorts will not be in the dress code, but what should I do about the tank tops and dresses? She probably has 30 plus dresses that she loves to wear...I will have to get tights to go under a few of them, but do I have her wear a thin t-shirt under as well? I don’t mind going out and buying a few new things, but I hate to replace an entire wardrobe because of the school requirements... Plus she is extremely picky (she is a 16 year old in a 5 year old body!) Thanks for an advice!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! I am sure I am worrying about it too much, but this is my first Kindergarten experience and I want to make sure I am not the mom that did it all wrong! I am going to take my daughter to the mall this weekend and let her pick out a few new things but also get undershirts and tights for the days she wants to wear her summer clothes...hopefully we won’t have any issues! We did find out last night at cheerleading practice that they are able to wear their uniforms to school on Friday's so that makes me a little less tense about the "strict" enforcement of the dress code! Thanks again I appreciate it!

I never saw those rules enforced in Kindergarden - definitely by 5th grade!

the ribbed tanks are okay in strap width and you can always layer those under the dresses if needed - but it probably won't be necessary.

Yes, please beware and always check on dress codes prior to buying clothes. Schools do inforce them.

Try shopping online for the under t-shirts and maybe some of those workout short for shorts that are too short.

I really don't think the dress code is that strict in the younger grades. I would think as long as the shorts come close to the knee it should be fine. As for the dresses and tanks, if you put something underneath, that would be fine I'd think. Or you could save those for after school and weekends. My son is going into second grade, and I've never seen them be too picky. I think the dress codes are mostly for junior high and high school, or maybe older elementary.

As far as the skirts go you can use spandex like we use to wear in the 80's or you can put shorts on with the skirts. My daughter likes her dresses too. I just make sure she has stretch pants under her skirts and dresses or shorts.

As far as the shirls are concerned you can layer the tank tops. If you tack them together you have the width, Or you can expand the straps and sew some material on them. Be creative. There is always more than one way into a building.

Just an idea!

I don't know about Melissa.....but in Plano ISD, they are not super strict with k-2nd grades. The 3rd graders usually begin a more strict process (I've never seen any child be asked to change in my 10 yrs of subbing at the PISD elementary school where I sub).

By 5th grade is when they do have reminders because middle school will check length. I have a 14 yr old and Yes, I have taken new clothes to school for her because a skirt was too short and the tank top was not 3 fingers width at the shoulder.

The layering style that started a couple years ago is still popular because if the girls wear 2 or more tanks, you get the 3 finger width.

My daughter starts 9th grade this year. She is a cheerleader and they cannot wear cheer uniforms to school. They have other clothes that coordinate with school colors and weere special ordered for the cheerleaders to wear at school on spirit day, etc. The uniforms are worn at games and special events only. They have 4 uniforms, non of which meet "code".

Sorry if that was TMI but I don't think you have much to worry about as a K. Of course, PE class will want some type of shorts under dresses and tennis shoes during pe.

Enjoy...the time flies...

My children always have a t-shirt underneath their dresses that dont have sleeves. We are a pretty modest family, but they have never minded a little white shirt underneath. And, they always wear shorts, leggings or tights under a dress as well. No need to replace the wardrobe, just alter it a bit, and know that as you continue to purchase clothes, you can modify your purchases to meet these requirements. I can assure you it isnt too hard to keep up with once you start. Good luck with school, it is a whole new world:) ~A.~
