My 2 year old daughter uses everything she can get her hands on to write on walls. I rarely catch her doing it. When I do, I help her clean it up and redirect her. SDhe recently found a permanent marker and marked up my bedroom wall. I know goo-gone would work to take it off but would also take the paint off the wall. Does anyone have any secrets to get it off that would not take off the paint?
Thanks so much for all your help. Magic Eraser worked like a charm.

Maybe you could just paint over it? A thought, my friend has a husband in Iraq, and she covered her walls with freezer paper and everyone could draw things for daddy whenever they wanted to.
Maybe you could take her to the store to pick out her "special drawing equipment and paper" it would help when she wants to draw on something-she might use her new special stuff. good luck!

There is a cleaner called "Awesome" and it truly lives up to its name. My son wrote on the walls with a sharpie and I cleaned it off with that. It didn't come completely off but it did lighten it so much that you could only see it if you knew it was there or if you got really close to the wall. I got it at the dollar store. I love it. I use it for everything! Hope it helps!!

When my 4 yr old was 2 yrs old he drew all over our antique stereo with a permanent marker. I was able to get it off with a little bit of olive oil on a soft cloth. It came right off for me. The same boy drew on my white rug with a permanent marker (makes me wonder why I buy permanent markers any more!) and I got it out with oxy clean carpet cleaner. It may work on a wall too, if you just use oxy clean. Good luck getting it off!

I have read all the wonderful comments..you probably have the sharpie off the walls now. Kids are amazing. They don't really mean to be naughty-it's not like they plan it or anything. Many catastrophes could be avoid if we kept things out of their reach. Take 15 minutes and gather all the sharpies, markers, crayons, pencils, pens and SCISSORS. Find a container that is not see through to put it all
in. Find a place that is out of reach and out of sight to keep this container in. Make sure it somewhere easily accessible to you. It had been proven that when we keep things in places easily accessible, we are more likely to put them away. When we don’t........well, we leave them out and then.....well, they see those scissors, creayons, markers, pens, pencils and well............... Make sure you keep this container in a convenient place so that you can easily grab it when you need something out of it. It is a known
fact that when things are kept in awkward places, we are not as likely to put them away.

Try the magic eraser. You know Mr. Clean. The thing is awesome. There is also paint you can buy that when marked on will come off easily although it's expensive. You can also go to any craft store and buy her a big pad of paper you know the ones that are as big as her and get an easl so she can show her talent on that. To top it all off by doing this you never have to buy art again because she's done it for you on the paper that's as big as her. Good luck with your talented artist.

No trick for taking it off the walls.
But from my own experience I learned to use spray paint and spray over the markings before painting the wall. Permanent marker or in my case dry-erase marker will show through if you only roll the wall paint on, but the spray paint will cover it and then you only have to roll it once.

MR. CLEAN MAGIC ERASER- is all I have to say. Whatever you do, DON'T RUB TOO HARD WITH THE "MAGIC ERASER" & DON'T LET THE MARKINGS SIT ON THE WALL FOR MORE THEN 2-3 DAYS! GOOD LUCK! IT REALLY WORKS!

I have found Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser will remove permanent marker. I have tried it myself. You may want to test a small area on your paint first because some paint has held up well and other paint has looked like it has faded. Either way you are probably going to have to repaint if you can't get it off. It has never taken the paint totally off but I could tell a difference in some areas. Good luck. Make sure to keep the eraser away from your little ones because there has been an email claiming that they can cause chemical burns, so I treat them like any other chemical in my house.

Try Mr. Clean Magic Eraser pads/sponges. Our grandchildren did the same thing (at their house)! Works well.
Also, you might try putting up some easel-like pads of blank paper at HER height, so that she may "design" at will without wrecking your walls! You might also possibly frame some of her pieces, so that she does not feel that all her works are always destroyed. Inexpensive, clear lucite, box frames can also be changed frequently. You could let her choose which she thinks is her best work!
And remember, this, too, shall pass! They grow up too fast!!
Good luck!

I have used a Mr. Clean magic eraser (available in any grocery store) to remove Sharpie from painted walls and doors. Seems to work pretty well and not remove the paint. Just a note of CAUTION: Do not let your child handle the magic eraser. They look like a harmless sponge, are odor free and dissolve as you use them so there is virtually no waste. BUT - there is some sort of chemical in the sponge that can cause terrible chemical burns to delicate skin, especially in children. I have used them with my bare hands without a problem but have seen several picture testimonials of children with burns on their faces, tummies, and arms from "helping mom" and scrubbing every place with these sponges. There is no disclaimer on the package!
If you want your child to help clean up in an effort to give consequence to her actions (absolutely!) I suggest having her use a damp rag to go over the marker spots before you scrub. The sponge needs to be dampened anyway so it won't hurt! Hope this helps.

Rubbing alcohol, aeresol hairspray, and acetone (not mixed together...) all have done wonders at taking permanent marker off of things for me! OH! And, as weird as this sounds, but often times if you color over the permaent marker with a dry erase marker, you can then wipe off the dry erase marker and it takes the permanent marker off with it as well. I teach high school and we are always doing this with our walls and whiteboards.

I have 30 years experience in construction, primarily in carpentry and painting and I'm sorry to say that there is no easy answer. :-( Goo Gone is just a solvent and you're right, it will affect the paint. And it's highly toxic as well, just as are toluene (the primary ingedient in most lacquer thinners), xylol, xylene, and denatured alcohol. Rubbing alcohol does work on permanent marker to some extent and would not be as damaging to the paint, although one can still see where it's used in most cases. Latex paints just don't have good resistance to these solvents, even the glossy variety, which is the most resistant. A dry erase surface cleaner will also perform the same function as it has organic sovents in it. I'd suggest using something like that, in good ventilation, i.e. opening windows and setting up a fan to carry the air out, then repainting the wall. It's really the only solution that will work completely and you may have to either prime the wall again first, or paint over the dark areas alone prior to painting the whole wall.
Good luck.
I'm glad to hear the Magic Eraser worked! It must not be a "true" permanent marker because those typically contain Xylol, which penetrates the lower layers of paint unless, of course, the paint is oil based).

Try the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. I've been able to remove blue ink from my walls with it. It even worked for my sister to remove scuff marks from her car where another car had hit her and didn't damage the paint finish!

Someone told me Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser takes off permanent marker. I haven't had it harm the paint on walls at all, but the eraser will take off the finish on wood.
Good Luck

Greased Lightening, and continual rubbing with it on a cloth should take it off.
I know it takes permanent marker out of clothes.
You will find it at WalMart.
Good Luck

Hair spray takes off permanent marker pretty well and shouldn't take your paint off. Just make sure you wash your wall after the hair spray. Hope that helps.

Mr. Clean's magic eraser is incredable. They are only about $1.25 for two at Walmart. I'm not sure about permanent marker, but with my experience it removes marker, pencil, paint scratches. Good luck

I got black sharpie off my white barstools with soft scrub cleanser on a sponge. It worked great. Not sure about walls. It's worth a try!

Take a dry erase marker over it and rub it off with a rag. It works on dry erase boards. It might work on walls?

LOL! My son did the permanent marker on our walls AFTER my husband has just painted them! I get my cleaning products from a company that keeps our kids safe, all non toxic to our families, AND I got the permanent marker off my walls and the nail polish off the carpet and tile the following week! Click on my link and see: http://www.ahealthcafe.com/letslivegreen AND MOST IMPORTANT EVEN SAFE TO USE ON HER HANDS!
