Hi moms,

I took my son off dairy products 2 months ago (he is almost 29 months now) because of reoccurant eczema. He is doing great! He also had chronic constipation when on dairy as well which I just assumed at the time was a normal thing for him. Now that he does not eat dairy he poops 1-3 times a day and its very soft. He diaper is a big mess and its everywhere. Is this how normal poop is supposed to be? Its not diarrhea at all, just brown and really soft. No constipation issues anymore! lol

I just wanted to clarify that he is not sick or not feeling well. He feels just great, just wondering since I am new to seeing so much soft poop.

What can I do next?

Hi BP,

Every human being should "poop" about an hour after EVERY meal. If he's eating regularly, the three times a day is great. Softer is better than harder....Make sure he's getting fiber in his diet as well. Fiber keeps the colon healthy and keeps it clean and disease free.

I tell people all the time that eczema is systemic and comes from the inside out. Good for you for getting rid of it!

God bless,
M.

One of my sons is like this. He is a big veggie eater and not much dairy. He has very soft poop and has never been constipated in his life. Sounds like your son has a very healthy digestive tract now that the dairy is gone from his diet.

It really depends on his diet.

The more liquid you have in your diet, the more fiber, the better you'll poop and the softer it will be. There's also a hormone called ADH (anti-diarrhetic hormone) that controls some of the consistency of the poop, but there's really no way to monitor its levels.

I hope he gets to feeling better soon. I'm a big advocate of calling the doctor, so I hope that advice helps.

Everyone's poop is different - and although I disagree with an earlier response that said that everyone should poop after every meal - some people only go 1 or 2 a day regularity is key not # of times - the important part is that your son is normal for him.

Some things that can contribute to a softer stool are the sugars in fruits and fruit juices. Not sure how much he is having, but try for no more than 4oz of juice. Also try increasing his fiber intake (toast and peanut butter would be a great way if there are no allergies).

Good luck!
