I starting having symtoms for a UTI on Friday and I got the Azo's over the counter to try to hold off until Monday. But by Sunday the pain and urgency had gotten worse so I went to the Urgent Care. To my surprise they said that my UTI was a "good one" had the white blood, red blood, nitrates.....everything showing up in my urine. When the pressed on my stomach it was really soar.

Anyways, I didn't realize it was that bad-my symtoms didn't seem to indicate so. But my question is, how long does it take for the medication to kick in. I started taking my antibiotic yesterday morning (Sunday) 500mg of Cipro and then he gave me the Phenazopyrid for the systems. I have had two doses of the Cipro and I still feel the same if not worse. Am I just being impatient or should I give it another day or so......or was my infection really that bad that its going to take awhile to get over?

I have had these before-numerous times-but this feels different......

Thanks girls,

What can I do next?

You poor girlie!!!
Not sure about how long the antibiotic will take to kick in but be sure that while you're taking ANY antibiotic to eat some Yogurt with LIVE CULTURES in it so that you don't get a yeast infection on top of your UTI :)(once or twice a day while you're on the antibiotic)

Good Luck

M.,
Cipr is a pretty good antibiotic. I think that it should take about 24 hours to begin to kick in. It sounds to me like you have waited this long with no luck. I woul call your doctor to follow up. If you had a pretty bad UTI to begin with you don't want it getting worse.
Maybe your UTI is not sensitive to Cipro and you need a different one. No sense in being miserable longer than you already have.
Also, don't forget to drink cranberry juice. Helps to flush the kidneys. Good luck and call your doctor!

It takes 48 hours for the antibiotics to start working. If you don't feel better after 48 hours, call your dr b/c they may need to give you something different. Did they send it off for a culture? Most likely they did, that will actually tell them which antibiotic would definitely cure your UTI. Good luck and feel better. And as hard as it may seem right now, drink lots and lots of water, it'll flush out your system even better. I was a MA at an OB-GYN office for 5 years.

Hi M.,
I'm a former Registered Nurse and have had alot of experience with UTI's unfortunately. The antibiotics take about a day and a half to really show any change in symptoms. Definitely continue to take the Phena for the symptoms..be diligent though. Take it every prescribed number of hours...don't wait until it wears off. Set your alarm if you have to and drink plenty of water. Hope this helps and best of luck!
Feel better!
