Hello everyone,

we have one more year before my son has to start Kindergarten but i do have a question. My son would have to go to Granby elementary. I haven't realy heard anything good about this school. We would love for him to go to Larchmont elementary and we are planning on moving to this school district but we have to wait three more years till we can afford a house in that area. We can not afford privat school at the moment so Larchmont would be perfect. So we were thinking on renting a room in that neighborhood so he can start there right away and doesn't have to transfer after a couple of years. Did anybody do this before? Just trying to get my son a good education on a small budget. Love to hear any good advice. Thank you!!!

What can I do next?

Hello M.,

You can get an out of district exception to send your son to Larchmont, a friend of mine did that, she met with the principal explained they were moving into the district (as soon as they sold their other house) and got the paperwork done with NO problem! That may solve your problem.

There are also other options, you can always homeschool your son. There are LOTS of resources and homeschoolers in the area. You can find out more info a www.vahomeschoolers.org.

Good luck to you, S.

My husband and I rented a house in Norfolk and it too was in a school zone that was not good. I refused to send my children there so they went to Christ the King with me (I teach there). My 10 year old attended CTK from PreK 3 through 1st grade. This is when my daughter was about to enter Kindergarten and we just got custody of my husband's son. We could not afford tuition for 3 children. Thank goodness my husband had agreed to look at buying a house. The first thing I told him was I would only live in an area with a good school. We searched high and low and I read all reports about all the elementary, middle and high schools. We also had to consider what we could afford. We finally moved into Mary Calcott area.

You do what you have to do for your children. They are precious and they grow up fast. Enjoy your time with your child and your heart will tell you what is best.

You can request "out of zone" schools. Which basically means that you go to the school of your choice and register him there. If, after all the kids who are zoned for that school register and there is still room left, he can go to that school. You will have to provide transportation, but I do not believe you would have to pay tuition or anything. I have a friend who did this in Hampton. She registered her boys for 2 different out of zone schools b/c she didn't like the one in her zone and wanted to be sure to get into one. She did not get her top choice, but did make it into her second choice. I think Norfolk is the same. I don't think the renting a room thing is the way to go -- unless you plan on sleeping there b/c worrying about getting caught would be too stressful, its a dishonest way to go about it and who knows the consequences if you were to get caught. Good luck.
