Do We Need to Pre-register for Kindergarten?

Our house is on the market so we're between places as far as where to register my son for kindergarten. If we sell before the school year, he'll go to the new school district. If we can't sell, obviously, he'll go to school in our present school district. In both districts, it's required you have current proof of residence to pre-register.

What will we be missing out on if we don't pre-register in either place? What's the advantage of pre-registering?

What can I do next?

Pre register where you currently live they will transfer any testing he has done at that time plus any school records if it's not until after school starts that you move. It's required in my town because they do some testing that helps get a base line of where the child is at.

Pre-registering and getting a confirmed spot for a child is necessary. You will also get all the need info about busing, school info and so on if you pre-register.

I would pre-register in your current school district. Then transfer him when every you move.

Just pre-register him to be on the safe side. I sort of slacked off with my middle son (9 years ago). I had my dad, so I thought pre-register him, well, my dad did tell me that I didn't send any paperwork, but I thought it was a sign up thing. Well, when I went to school to see what teacher he and his older sister, who was at the school the previous year, had, found out that he was never pre-registered and all the spots were filled and they didn't have any room. Turned out, after a lot of paperwork was done, that he didn't have to be source-out to another school, and was able to attend. The kindergarten class was FULL, over a bit.

Just do it, if you end up moving then so what, could save a lot of headaches...

Its necessary.... I agree with Katie... I sat in line 5 hours yesterday registering my kiddo for kinder even though we might be moving into a different school zone area since there are 6 schools in the area =)

Do it!! You will regret it if you dont!

I would pre-register in the current school district. Not much you can do about the other one right now. My neighbor is a teacher and she said she had parents registering the first day of school!

The advantage to pre-registering is your child is on the rosters, bus schedules, gets assigned to a class, receives all the necessary information for events, meetings, etc. If you register for the district where you currently are and then move, you would need to transfer him once you move regardless of when it is.

If you already know where the new place is and are sure you are moving, could you register him at the new location and then drive him there while your waiting to move if it doesn't happen before school starts? That is what i did.

I don't know if pre-registering is necessary in your state but it is here in DE.

register with your current home school and then transfer if needed once the house is sold. You run the risk of not being able to go to that school if you don't register and it fills up.

It must be different in Dallas. I work in Dallas ISD, and you can pre-register, but you can also just show up the day of, or the week before, or even after school starts. There is not an issue of the school being "full." No kid ever gets turned away. If a grade level is over crowded, the school adds an extra teacher or moves one from another grade level.

There is no penalty or problem at all with not pre-registering.

With that being said, I say definitely pre-register at the school you are currently at. If there is an open house or a chance to talk to the teachers or principal, go on up and introduce yourself. Describe your child's personality and ask that they place your child with the best teacher for him.

If you have a chance to go to an open house at the other school, I would do that as well.
