i loved our tour in norfolk. we lived in norfolk, in an area called riverview, off granby street just north of the zoo, in an 100+ year old victorian house, with stained glass windows, four fireplaces and a beautiful grand staircase. it was awesome. we didn't have kids at the time, so i know nothing about the schools in the area. my boss lived in an equally beautiful area in ghent - there's also west ghent and larchmont . i've been to houses in each of those areas and they are great.

my cousin lived in an area of chesapeake called riverwalk. it is a planned community with newer homes and schools. very popular area - close to shopping. there's also an area in chesapeake called greenbriar that is nice.

i don't know much about virginia beach, except that it is pretty loud... everytime we met with friends at restaurants out there the jet noise was awful. now, i am married to a naval flight officer, so I am used to noise, but it was REALLY bad out there... so check out the 'sound' of freedom before signing a lease or buying a house.

good luck

Hi J.. I to am a military mom, living in Japan. My husband is from the Norfolk area, and we've been doing a lot of recent research on the area, as we plan on retiring there. The best areas in Norfolk are Ghent and Larchmont, considering good schools and low crime. As far as Chesapeake, Western Branch, Great Bridge, and Hickory are by the far the best areas. Hope this helps!

Hi J.
We lived in Norfolk 4 years ago and lived in the Ward corner neighborhood. It was nice and safe and in the Granby school district. We attended the Tabernacal Church on Granby and they do have a Christian school there as well if you will be there when your girls are school age. There is also a very large homeschool community. There are some great MOPS groups in the area as well. We had a wonderful realtor named Carol Anne Kent who was very helpful and truthful about neighborhoods. If she is still working you should go through her or through Linda Crabtree if you are looking for a home. Many people live in Virginia Beach or Chesapeake and commute to Norfolk. We did that for one year but the traffic was so holacious that my husband needed to move closer to base for his sanity! There is another area in Norfolk that is nice...I think it is called Lark (something??). If you are on Little creek coming out of the base you take a right as if heading to the commisiary. When Little Creek ends you take a left. That is a very nice little neighborhood as well, though as I remember it a little pricier than Wards Corner. There are pockets of very nice little neighborhoods in Norfolk. All I can suggest is that you contact either Carol Anne Kent or There were alot of young families. I have a babysitter you can use as well. Her name is Nora Lester and she is the most amazing woman. She and I became great friends and she is magical with children, like a sweet doting grandmother. Hope this helps!
