Problems with Brow Waxing?

Dear Mamas,
Over the past several years, I have gotten my eye brows waxes 2-3 times a year. I have never had any trouble, although it is not particularly comfortable. I had it done a few weeks ago. In the past, the same salon has put some sort of cooling liquid on my skin afterward, and they did not do that this time. This time, I have a break out of little pimples all along the top of my eye brow. It does not appear to be an infected hair folicle, but really looks more like a pimple. I made a comment about it to my husband and he said, "It sounds like maybe they are not very hygenic at that salon." That had not even occurred to me! Like I said, it has been a few weeks and the little pimples are still there even though I am using some acne cream. I have never in my life been prone to break outs. Has anyone had this experience before? Any advice?
Thanks!
A.

I do not think to uncommon when you wax or tweeze brows to have some irration or a temporary mini "break out" for a short time after your procedure. However since you mentioned you had the waxing done a few weeks ago and pimples have not yet gone away I would maybe be a little concerned. If they red and painful you might have a doctor do a quick look at your face to make sure you do not have a staph infection of some sort. I got a staph infection on my legs after having a pedicure done at a nail salon a couple years back and it was not fun.

I had this happen the first time I had them waxed. I have never done it again. But I am allergic to many things so I just thought I was allergic to the wax or gel. It may just be something in the ingredients that different from another place. Good luck!

I don't get my brows waxed anyomore. I get them threaded. If you live in San Antonio, I have a great gal who does them for $10. They look so clean and trimmed. Let me know if you need her number. If you don't know what threading is, you can see videos on Youtube of it getting done. Good luck!

Okay, this happened to me and my mother is a beautician. She explained that it is an allergic reaction, and though I have done this monthly with age you can develope an allergy to the wax. Take some Benedryll and it should clear up in a week or so. Hope this helps.

I get those, too. I don't know what it is, but they usually go away after about a day. One time I hadn't had a wax in almost 2 years, & I "broke out" really bad! I would pop the pimple to let the infection out, & they would get infected all over again. This happened for almost 4 days.

I went back to that salon 2 times after that, & it never happened again. I just think it was because I hadn't waxed in a long time.

I have had the same problem and do not think it is anything to be concerned about but I have heard about threading too and I am really wanting to try that out instead. I have been blessed with the eyebrows that won't quit and have been waxing them since elementary school - except now I do it myself at home.

The procedure in eye waxing is to first wipe with alcohol then wax and then use more alcohol or astringent. Just like shaving your legs or bikini line bumps can happen. I do not think this is caused by doing anything wrong. Maybe you washed your face that morning and opened some pores and it just got irritated. Use some strong tea on it to nutralize it. It will be ok. Just tell the salon and they will be more aware next time. I have worked in salons all my young years. It may not happen next time. Hopefully not. G. W

I second the suggestion for threading. My skin can't take the heat anymore from the waxing and threading is a much better option for me now. I got my eyebrows waxed a few weeks ago not thinking and felt itchy and pimply for days afterward. I never get that from threading.

I don't think it has anything to really do with hygene. I was told when you wax, which I do, that you are leaving those pores wide open. Not to use any soap, make up remover, or facial cleanser in that area. I always have small break outs right after. I cleanse with water and rubbing alcohol. It may also be the wax, etc they use. You could be having a small alergic reaction.

Not to worry, A.! What you described is VERY normal! I've been getting my eyebrows waxed for the past 10 years, going in as often as every 3 weeks. I've gone to some extremely ritzy, VERY clean and hygenic places and I still break out! What's worked for me is to rub tea tree oil on my eyebrows before I go to bed (and it's best to do it right when you get home). The tea tree oil prevents and treats acne break outs and the stuff is amazing!!!
Good luck!

Sorry, I can't help you with your problem but I do have a suggestion. Try threading instead of waxing. It is so much better and last longer and doesn't pull a layer of skin off everytime you do it. I actually tried a new girl last week and she is at a kiosk in Stonebriar Mall. She did a great job. Good Luck!

I always have that problem if I don't warn them before hand. I don't believe it is a hygenic thing more of a sensitive skin thing. I have been going to the Elizabeth Arden Red Door at Willowbend for a long time and the bumps still happen to me if I don't remind them how sensitive my skin is. I was told not to use acne products on it, it will only make it worse. Use a cortizone or polysporin.

I have tried threading, but just a warning it is very painful!!! Looks great, but painful..I'd rather deal with a few bumps!

Start with Hydrogen Peroxide - to see if it's an infection.
Then you can put Triple Antibiotic cream on it to see if it goes down.

Good Luck, J.

There can be one of two different causes for the bumps. And since I can't actually see the bumps you have I will tell you what it could be. An allergic reaction would not look like pimples (meaning no white head) more like a bumpy rash. Now I have an allergy to certain types of wax (like the honey wax) so that has led me to use different wax when I do clients. I use hemp wax mostly. Now the other reason you could have bumps break out is like what your husband said. The salon doesn't use hygenic practices. If the person waxing you double dips the stick into the wax after using it on you, they have just contaimented the entire wax. This is how herpes and MRS is being spread. So you either should switch to threading (although you still have to watch to make sure the thread that they are using is not being placed in there mouth and the onto your skin), or go to a place that actually follows the state board rules and regulations. If you see them double dipping you then know there practices are not safe. Oh yeah and the cooling gel or liquid (whichever kind they use) helps to cool the skin after waxing so it is possible thats way you have the bumps. Hope this helps you.

It could also be "burn" bumps. I found that if the wax is too hot, it causes little pimple like things that are actually from my sensitive skin and the hot wax. I always remind my brow lady to cool the wax for just a couple seconds before she applies it. The acne cream may have dried it out or irritated it more. Probably not a hygiene issue (if they used alcohol wipes).
