Hi,
My son, Jack, will be 3 years old in December. I am hoping to enroll him in a preschool program this fall, or in January when he turns 3 if that is required. Does anyone have any recommendations for a great preschool in the Kzoo/Portage area? He has never been in daycare, so preschool will be a big adjustment for him - we are looking for a nurturing, fun environment. Any help will be greatly appreciated! p.s. I would also like to hear about any negative experiences anyone has had with local preschools. Thanks!

I also have a child that will be 3 in December! I have noticed while driving to various places that there are 3 churches at the Romence/Oakland intersection and 2 have preschools - not sure about the 3rd.
On Romence, East of Oakland is a Methodist Church and a Lutheran Church which advertises 3 year old preschool. The Lutheran Church is either St James or St Michael. The other Lutheran Church is on Oakland, South of Romence. I haven't checked any of the programs out yet so I can't give you any further info - sorry!

If you're near Portage, I know most of my neighbors with 3&4 yr olds are going to Otis Montessori on Center Street is great. Most of the kids in this program are at some level of reading when they get to Kindergarten. Years ago, we went to the United Methodist Preschool on Westnedge (also Portage), but I'm not sure how they are now. I know since we've been there - lots of changes.

Welcome to the area!

I have a 6 yr old and 4yr old. I have been with Otis Montessori for 4 years now and love it. They have a great preschool and daycare side. We go tues and thurs mornings but there are many shcedules to choose from. It is structured and nurturing, I love the teachers. It gave both my children a chance for social interaction and structure. It is on Centre St. in Portage. A little expensive but worth it. Happy hunting.

Hi M.-
My son attends the preschool at Loy Norrix Child Care Center. Many people think it's just for students and teachers, but it's not. My son has been there for 2 years now and has a lot of fun. They use the Creative Curriculum, which focuses on learning through experimenting with materials in the environment. They also teach reading readiness through games and activities and letter of the week. The Preschool Room at Loy Norrix Child Care Center is open from 7am-6pm and the cost is only $95 for full day care and $70 for half days. The staff is really caring. The children get a lot of attention because the class size is small and there are high school students who are taking the Early Childhood Education class that work with the children in addition to the preschool staff. The preschool follows a "modified" school calendar. They are open every day that teachers work, closed for Christmas, spring and summer breaks. The phone number is ###-###-#### and the director's name is Mary. Good luck in your search!
