Seeking Preschool for 2 1/2 Year Old in Carrollton/Plano/Lewisville Area

My son is 2 1/2, and I stay at home full time with he and my 6 month-old daughter. He was in daycare until April of this year when I decided I needed to be home with him. Now that the summer is drawing to a close, I feel like he needs a bit of structured/group learning and play for the school year. I don't really want something everyday...just something a few days a week for half days or something like that. There are so many choices out there with churches, schools, etc that I feel like I don't know where to start. I would love any suggestions. Thank you so much for your help.

So What Happened?

Ok...I made my decision. I ended up going with First United Methodist Church in Carrollton. While I visited several others and LOVED them (thank you all for the great suggestions), this one just fit best with all of our needs. They are the closest, had an opening on the right days, loved the teacher, and they had a class opening for the older 2's which was important to us. Thank you again, and we are so excited to start school this fall.

I would start out doing a search on the Child Care Licensing Website, so you can see if the facility has had any major violations. www.tdprs.state.tx.us
I love Primrose, I know the one in Lewisville off Garden Ridge use to do part time. They have a wonderful educational program. My daughter new all her colors/shapes before she was 2. They are very caring and have the kids play in a learning enviornment.

Try Apple Creek Preschool in Allen or Frisco. They have a morning or afternoon and are an accredited preschool. We have been going for almost 3 years and have learned a lot.

I love A Child's Garden, a Montessori Program that my children are in. They offer half day, (kids leave around noon), full day (kids leave around 3:00), and extended day. Their website is www.acgmontessori.org, their phone number is ###-###-####, and their director is Donna Hatter. They are at Old Denton and Whitlock. If you decide to check them out, tell them A. T.,

Prestonwood Baptist Church has a GREAT program on Tue and Thur 9-2. My daughter went last year and learned so much and still is asking me almost everyday when school is going to start again and she is just almost 3 years old. My husband and I have been hit hard with the whole economy thing, but my husband said that is the last place we are going to cut back because our daughter loves it so much and gets so much out of it. Let me know if you have any questions.

Check out First United Methodist Church in Lewisville (it's on Main St. just West of Sam's Club/Walmart). I'm biased, of course, because my little 4 yr old has been going there since she was two. She absolutely loves it! The "teachers" are mostly actual teachers who just prefer working in this private setting vs. public schools. They offer two or three day classes I believe for your age range...classes are from 9am to 1pm and they don't take naps - which I love (because I'd rather her come home tired and ready to nap :)...that also makes the price a bit more reasonable. Don't quote me, but $140-160 ??? per month. School starts right after Labor Day, so you should call pretty quickly! Janet Page is the director

Christ United Methodist at Parker & Coit is amazing. St. Andrews United Methodist on Plano Pkwy between the Tollway & Preston is great. Custer Rd. United Methodist on Custer North of Spring Creek is great. I don't think that you would go wrong with any of these. The most important thing is to make your choice close and convenient to your home and the feel of the school matches what you are looking for. All of these are in Plano and offer 2, 3 or 5 day programs. Once you pick which ones you are interested in I would get my name on their waiting lists NOW! Good Luck!

We like Lewisville Christian School (http://www.lcsweb.org/). We just decided this past year to change schools and this is the school that we chose for my son. They offer 2, 3, 4, and 5 day a week programs, have great hours, and are very reasonably priced. The staff is friendly and I got a good vibe when I was there. I also have 4 other friends who have their kids there.
I also liked Lamb of God in Flower Mound (http://www.log.org/preschool/index.php) across from Parker Square when I was shopping for a new school. I have sent my kids to their summer camp program and really like it.
Good luck - there are a lot of great programs out there and I'm sure you'll find one you like.
You also might check out the Family eGuide website (http://www.familyeguide.com/) - I think they put out an issue with preschool information in it that listed most of the programs in Lewisville/Flower Mound.
Let me know if you have any questions!

Call Marlo Sennick at Reading Friends Flower Mound. I was new to the area and found so many great recommendations for Reading Friends. My middle son attended pre-K and loved it. It's structured and fun and is a pre-school, not a daycare. It was a bit of a pinch to my budget, but worth every penny. My only regret is that we moved out of the area for my husband's job.

I forgot to mention that although it says Flower Mound, it is actually located in Lewisville off Garden Ridge and Moccassin Trail just not far from I-35.

Lewisville has a large number of preschools and from what I am seeing around town several still have openings. Lakeland Baptist, Garden Ridge Church of Christ, Lewisville Methodist, Triesh Methodist, Trinity Presby, Lamb of God, First Baptist of Lewisville, and Faith Lutheran all offer programs that are great for preschoolers. They have all been around for years and have great reputations.

Have you looked at Teddy Bear Junction in Plano? The school has been in existence since 1985. TBJ has the best child to teacher ratio around. In the 2's classes there are no more than 8 children with 2 teachers. Classes are offered for 2's one day, two days or 3 days a week. The school has been blessed to receive 2 awards for the Collin County AEYC- Teacher of the Year for 2009 and Director of the Year for 2007. The staff is very loving and nurturing. You can call at ###-###-#### for more information.

I highly recommend starting them at a Mothers Day Out program at a church for their first time out. It is typically a very loving and nurturing environment. They feel safe and you feel peace about it. My son loved Prestonwood Baptist's program. I'm sure that many churches in the area have great programs too.

We also had a good experience with American Montessori Campus located near Willow Bend mall. The owner is a very nice woman and he had very good teachers. He learned a lot and was very happy there.

We had a terrible experience at Creme' de la Creme'. That was the first place we tried and my son hated it and I didn't like leaving him there. It was not a loving or nurturing environment.

Good luck!

I agree about looking into the classes Ms. Jill offer's through the carrollton rec. department. my kids have taken several of her classes and she is wonderful. you can also look into a Mother's day out program at 1st Methodist Carrollton (my child is going there), Prestonwood, !st baptist Carrollton, and Norkirk Presby. I know friends who's kids have gone to all those places and they all loved them. I do not know if they still have space for the fall as alot of programs fill up in the spring for the fall semester, but it is worth a call.

Montessori Episcopal School in Lewisville is a wonderful preschool. I'm a stay at home mom too and we wanted to be sure to provide our son with more structure and an introduction to school, not just put him in a day care. This was a perfect fit for us. The Montessori Method teaches children through hands-on, interactive learning. They have a wonderful program for 2 year olds that meets Tuesday and Thursdays for just half a day. My son went there and had Mrs. Ely for his teacher. She is the best! We also liked that the school continues through 1st grade so he wouldn't have to change schools later. Please give them a call at ###-###-#### and ask to take a tour. You won't regret it!

Crossing Point Christian School in First Christian Church in McKinney (off of Church street). They are amazing and offer programs tailored from 2 to 5 days a week. You can go 9 to 12 or 9 to 2. They even have an extended care program before or after class. They offer Spanish and movement and tons of love and Biblical growth for kids. They are also very reasonably priced. We went there for 4 years & I will send my other one soon. My daughter skipped into the school for 4 years and LOVED it!

Check out our page on Child Care Providers in Lewisville, Flower Mound, and Highland Village: http://www.familyeguide.com/index5.php?id=5&sid=82

It's still in the works, hence the reason some providers don't have all of their chart information listed (we're still confirming).

Check out the Carrollton rec center at Rosemeade. Several of my friends take their kids to Ms. Jill's class and love it. It is kind of like a preschool, but just a few hours a couple days a week and very affordable.
