I am 5 weeks pregnant and having some very bad sickness. Another thing is I was on Paxil when I got Pregnant but then my doctor wanted me to stop which is understandable since it isn't good for the baby. But for a week now I've been so dizzy, vomiting, don't want to even eat or drink which I've tried to make myself and I even been to the hospital and they told me I'm going thru a withdrawal. I need advice as to, do I need to go back to the hospital since I'm not eating or drinking hardly or will this horrible feelings go away. Thank you

What can I do next?

Unfortunately you need to discuss this with a pharmacist. They know the ins and outs of medication. Docs really don't know squat about the meds they prescribe. They get told by the pharmacy rep that tells them the med is good for this or that. Then they leave a bunch of samples. The doc does some research and decides whether to give the meds or not.

They don't have the papers in front of them each time they discuss the meds with a patient. A pharmacist only knows medication. They don't have to deal with patients or other people that take him mental time away from only the medication side of treatment.

Do you have an ob/gyn doctor? They are much better at handling morning sickness issues than the hospital ER (I know from my experience). I had horrible morning sickness with my last child. Here are some things you may want to try:

Sea Bands--wear on your wrists (you can get them at any drug store). They are good for nausea and dizziness

Saltine crackers
Ginger ale
Preggy pops (suckers for pregnant women)
Melons (cantaloupe, watermelon, honeydew)
Seltzer water
Eat small meals that have protein (bacon, cheese, eggs)
Lots of sleep helps too

Ask your ob about pills for morning sickness. I was on Zofran. It's the same drug that is prescribed to cancer patients that are going through chemo theraphy. I took it as I needed it. It made the morning sickness way more manageable when nothing else helped.

If you're not holding anything down and get dehydrated, you will need to goto the doctor. Make sure you drink LOTS of water (or I loved powerade) to make sure you don't get dehydrated because that will make the sickness worse! It's a vicious cycle.

As Markasa said...you can try Preggo pops, sprite, crackers. To be honest, nothing really helped that much...but having something in my tummy made me feel a little better.

Talk to your doctor. Talk to your doctor. Talk to your doctor. That is the BEST person to address the symptoms you are having. I'm sorry you aren't feeling well. I hope it passes quickly.

You should definitely be working with your OB regarding this. Has he or she talked to the doctor who gave you the depression medicine? They should be talking to each other.

I believe you can get through this, but you need help doing it. Is there someone who can stay with you so that you aren't alone? If you feel dizzy, lay down wherever you are in the house so that you don't fall and hit your head. Try whatever works - milkshakes, fruit, gatorade. Anything with calories and electrolytes. Getting dehydrated is the worse thing for you. The baby will pull out everything it can from you - YOU are the one that needs the nutrients, though to be honest, the baby really needs folic acid. That's to prevent neural tube defects like spina bifida and some cleft palates. Some grains and breads have folic acid, if you can't stomach prenatal vitamins. My mom used to make something called milktoast - warm milk and buttered toast - see if you can stomach that.

Your horrible feelings can be both from being so sick and the withdrawal. What's important is that you don't go it alone. The ER isn't necessarily enough. Get your OWN doctors who know your case to help you.

Good luck,
Dawn

I am so sorry.............I can remember withdrawing from Paxil (and a whole host of other antidepressants). It really is brutal..............(Do you get that electrical 'zap' feeling?) Usually, I try to taper off of them gradually, instead of cutting 'cold turkey.' But- I can understand why they wanted you to get off of them, for the health of the baby.

It will get better! It looks as if Paxil has a very short 'half life,' which means your body is seeking to get rid of it..........

If it's been quite a while and you still feel sick, then it may be 'morning sickness.' The doctor can give you a prescription for morning sickness, or you can take Benadryl, which helps dry up any fluid in your inner ear, so it can help with dizziness. You can also try those wristbands that people use for going on cruise ships, etc.... (didn't really help me... I took Benadryl... )

I hope you feel better soon! [And- as awful as you feel... there may eventually be a bright side... My pregnancy went so smoothly, I gained over 86 pounds! That probably won't happen to you. ;o).)

Paxil can be really hard to go off of, and it might be better to taper off of it. Or switch to another one like Zoloft. I took it during both of my pregnancies, but I stopped during the 3rd trimester for lung development.

As for the vomiting, if you notice anything in particular, maybe try to avoid that, or at least see if its a trigger food. They can change all the time though.

I tried all of the things that are supposed to stop the nausea, including the meds from the doctor. The phenegrin worked well, but gave me restless legs, the Zofran works almost as well, but its expensive and the insurance only covers so many. We found the BEST thing ever, was to take fresh ginger root and peel it, then chop it into small pieces and eat it. I couldn't handle the taste so he put it in empty gel caps for me so that I could swallow it. This helped great!

Go see the doctor, and probably the ER, but you need fluids. Honestly, my doc never really had anything wonderful to say or help me with this. I just did it for the whole pregnancy twice. Sorry.

I got dehydrated during my one and only pregnancy. I was so depleted that I was hospitalized and given fluids intraveneously. Go now to your doctor. You may need an IV.
