I took it for my sons first trimester... I didn't take the full dosage reccs, just what was necessary in order to keep food down and function. Without it, I would have been hospitalized with an iv drip. It worked wonders with me, and I loved it. I had no side effects- except some mild constipation- but that could be to the fact that I really took less then half of the dosage you can take it at. I would say to cut it down as much as you can and see what happens.

Before taking Rx or OTC drugs which have a host of side effects, check out two herbal allies that are safe and effective. Your MD's food IQ should be high enough to include these foods instead of running to his/her Rx pad!
Who can argue with safe AND delicious?

GINGER is a digestive aid and reduces nausea better than most OTC meds.
Find ginger tea in a health food store ( Yogi Tea is one of my favorites) or slice fresh ginger herb ( found in the supermarket) into warm water. also check out pickled ginger- available at any japanese restaurant or in your local asian market.
PEPPERMINT is also very effective in reducing nausea. If you're near a Starbucks, try a Refresh Tazo tea. or grab a box of pepperming tea at your local supermarket.
I had 10+ weaks of the queaze and dry heaves with all 3 of my pregnancies. THIS STUFF WORKS!

Also note that nausea is Mother Nature's way of keeping us away from toxins in our vulnerable state of early pregnancy. Your nausea means that your body is infinitely wise!
GOOD LUCK!
S :)

S.,

I took Zofran with both of my pregnancies. I started out on pills and ended up getting a pump. I had very severe morning sickness. I only had problems with constipation. I didn't experience headaches or dizziness.

You may also check with your OB/GYN and ask if he/she can switch your meds to Regelan. I found that it worked better for the morning sickness and also is a lot cheaper than Zofran. The only problem I had with that medication was drowsiness.

Congrats and good luck! I had morning sickness in both pregnancies for the entire 9 months. It didn't go away until after the births.

I took Zofran during my first pregnancy for nausea (not associated with morning sickness) and I still take it for extreme nausea. It's fantastic. I never had the side effects you mention, though. Taking half a dose should help.

Yes, I took it and it really saved me during my pregnancy. I needed it from week 10 until about week 17. I could only take 4mg at a time. Maybe you could try changing the time of day you take the pill. I tried everything else- ginger, peppermint, gatorade. The one thing I wish I'd done more of was drink more water and fluids in general. Good Luck!

Hi S.,
Wow, I am a cancer survivor for 11 years and they gave me Zofran with my chemo! It is strong stuff. Made me feel horrible too. Perhaps you could talk to your pharmacist about it. Good Luck to you, hope you feel better

Just wanted to add my 2 cents. For me, my morning sickness turned out to be mostly from my prenatal vitimins. I was never able to take supplements before pregnancy because they made me sick to my stomach. Stopped taking the vitimins and the morning sickness stopped immediately. Good luck.

I took it with my youngest child. I was so thankful for it. I could not keep any food or liquids down w/o it. I think I was on Zofran for the first three or four months of the pregnancy.

I too had the headaches. It was worth it being able to eat.
The constipation wasn't too big a deal. I just ate more veggies.

Trust me, the headaches will lessen and you will be thankful you where taking it.

I took it with my daughter and again with this pregnancy, its gods gift to all day morning sickness. You should have only started with half a pill every 4 hours as needed. after a couple of days you should be feeling normal as possible again.Make sure you get the melt aways. They are easy to split in half they're sort of like foam in texture and just melt in your mouth, in less than a half an hour you dont feel like your puking your brains out. I hope cutting back helps you feel better.

As for the constipation make sure your drinking enough water and take a stool softner for a day or two and then you'll be back to normal.

Oy, I don't have any advice but I just wanted to say I feel for you! Morning sickness really takes the fun out being pregnant, doesn't it??! And I never understood why they call it morning sickness because mine lasted all day sometimes also. Thank god for saltine crackers!
Good luck and congratulations.

Hi S.,

I have a very simple suggestion. You might think it is way too simple. Drink plenty of pure, clean water!

Morning sickness is the very first sign of dehydration. This is how the mother’s body translates dehydration of the fetus. Pregnant women need more water than the average person, since the cells of two bodies are involved.

Water is usually taken for granted. The best way to prevent, treat and in many cases cure illness is to give the body the right tools and let it go to work. With the proper intake of healthy water, the right minerals and nutrients the body can overcome almost anything. Morning sickness is one of them.

All the best!

C.

I took it with 4 out of my 5 pregnancies and it was a total blessing...it didn't take away the sickness, but at least I could function...on #5 I was constipated and you can take Colace (an over the counter stool softner...not a laxative...totally safe...of course ask your doctor first)...best of luck, I hope you feel better soon!

I am also pregnant, and was suffering from headaches, dizziness, and nausea. I finally linked my symptoms to allergies, and with one Claritin at night I woke up feeling much better all day. I have never taken Zofran, but I would follow the doctors instructions unless the side affects are worse than the symptoms. Good Luck

I saw that you posted back that you are still suffering. I took zofran and had the same side effects. I wound up losing 20 pounds during my pregnancy, but thankfully it did subside around 20 weeks to 38 weeks, then it came back for the last bit. UGH!

The people that are suggesting more water, not taking vitamins, etc... have not experience hypermyesis. Seriously. Water is not going to help. I couldn't even keep a tsp. of water down every 15 minutes.

It got so bad at one point after being hospitalized for an extended period of time that I considered terminating the pregnancy because I didn't think I would make it to the delivery. We finally contacted an author of a book on hypermysis and she was nice enough to come out and visit me and tell me about her experience. She did wind up terminating her pregnancy, but was able to recommend a great therapy to my high risk maternity doctor--- they dosed me up with steroids in my IV and I was literally better in minutes. It was the best thing I have ever done. There are some risks to the baby with steroids, but there is alot more risks when the baby isn't getting any nutrients.

I hope you are able to overcome your sickness.

Oh- if it isn't too bad, you might ask your dr for promethazane. It is much older than zofran and it helped me tremendously with my first pregnancy. (it is alot cheaper too!)

Yes I sadly had to take Zofran for 8 months of my pregnancy while I was hooked up to an iv. I had hyperemesis, and it never went away. If it weren't for the zofran I wouldn't have been able to keep anything down including water. It didn't completely cure me but took away about 70% of my vomiting and allowed me to get off tpn(Total parenteral nutrition), and just be on the iv for hydration purposes. It was my miracle pill. My now 5 year old is a healthy happy little boy. I also was pregnant with hyperemesis a few years ago and again was prescribed zofran and it once again helped me but that time I got an infection from my iv that led to sepsis and I lost the baby and all chances of ever getting pregnant again. However the zofran helped me tremendously and its benefits greatly outweighed the side effects. Headaches, dizziness and constipation are all also side effects of pregnancy. I had all with or without zofran, so take half of the pill and see if the side effects disappear, and if they don't you'll know it may just be the pregnancy. Good Luck!
