Ok, I have a 2.5 year old that has no desire to be potty trained at this point. I don't have a problem with that, except that he is in size 6 diapers and is peeing through them! He wears overnights at night and is wet through almost every morning. Changing sheets on a bunk bed everyday is not a fun task. He gets changed right before bed. He doesn't usually drink anything right before bed. Plus, throughout the day he pees through. I need some suggestions. I have three other children, two of which are potty trained. I haven't had this problem before. Thanks

What can I do next?

At BabiesRus they have something called Doublers near the diapers...they are strips of extra absorbant stuff that you can put into a diaper for a heavy wetter. I cloth diaper but I got them for my sister's heavy wetter and they work wonderfully! Good luck to you!

My son was and is a big kid. (He is 9 and taller than most of my daughter's 13-yr-old friends...and about my height!) He wasable to wear size 6 as well as pull-ups, but we had to experiment with brands. I know there also are some you can get for larger kids, maybe by mail. I thought I would need to look into that, but as he was not ready for underwear until his was 3 1/2, I almost had to go that route. Good luck!

Do you use the "Good Nights" brand of night time diapers? My 6 1/2 year old who wets at night uses these and they are able to hold in his massive amounts of urine. This is the only brand that has worked for us. Also we were told nothing to drink after 6 p.m.

I would try just putting underwear on him during the day - and keep taking him and sitting him on the potty every 1 1/2 hours or so. My children always liked the feel of the underwear, and didn't want the diaper back on. The nighttime issue may be completely different - I had a younger brother we had to keep waking up in the middle of the night to take him to the bathroom for many years - it is something I wouldn't push and worry about for awhile - just concentrate on daytime first.

I agree with limiting liquids a few hours before bed. I became a master of diaper changing while my son was sleeping! You could give it a try--before you go to bed?
Have you tried the Good Nights diapers? I think they are for bigger kids and more pee. Can you put a large waterproof pad (the kind that is soft like fabric on O. side and waterproof underneath) under him on top of the sheet for a quicker bed change?

I have just begun to potty train my 2 year old twins.
So I really don't have much personal experience to share, but I do want to share what all my friends told me, who have gone through potty training many kids.

They had the older kid go with the little one into the bathroom and praised the older kid for doing his or her business and washing up properly.

Eventually the baby wanted to copy the older sibling. Get the older kids to encourage too.

They also had a sticker chart on the wall and everytime they went on the potty, or at least tried to stay dry, they got to put a fun sticker on the chart. After 3 or so, depending on the age of child, they could earn a reward.
good luck.
I will be in the same boat as you soon, and I have no older siblings to help, haha.

Because I feel I need to ask, my kids always soaked through certain brands of diapers - specifically huggies and Target store brands. Have you tried Luvs or Pamper's baby-dry?

You might try getting a cheap water proof pad for him to sleep on. The have ones that are flat at wal-mart in the baby sheet area that are 10.00 for a 2-pack. At least you will only be changing that every day! We put a towel on top of ours for those nights when my son won't pee right before bed or if we are out late and he falls asleep without peeing at all.

The other thing that worked for a friend of mine is that she had her son sleep on a crib mattress on the floor of his room that she slipped under the bed in the morning. She put him on the potty at bed time, and then at regular (1 hour or so) intervals throughout the day. At night time, she told him that there were no clean sheets for the big boy bed since his diaper leaked, would he like to go potty? If he said no, he slept on the crib mattress (towel under the sheet that she would have to change in the morning) and if he peed, she let him sleep in the big boy bed.

Good luck, I know how frustrating this is!

I feel your pain. My daughter (2 1/2) is perfectly happy wearing her diaper. We have started bribing her with goodies to go but still nothing. She is very articulate (I think) so her verbalizing it isn't the problem. I am eager to read the responses to your question for ideas. good luck

we change our son at 11pm when we go to bed and again at 5 when we wake up. He does not wake during this process. If we do not do this he soaks the bed. We would rather get up and change a diaper than change the bed a few hours later. Sorry, I wish I had more advice for you. BTW we have used all brands and point in the right direction. The dr. says they start to hold more before they are ready, so we are hoping he will be ready soon. We will pray the same for u

I have a child who will be 6 in December and still wets the bed. He was challenging to potty train and also ended in size 6 diapers. I found a cover for the fitted sheet from One Step Ahead. www.onestepahead.com. It's called Dri Nights Waterproof Mattress Protector. It goes over the fitted sheet and is machine washable and dryable. I bought 2 so when I pull one off to wash it I can put a clean one on the bed. They were a little pricey but have saved me so much laundry it was well worth it. Mine have been washed and washed and washed and are still in great shape. I've had them for about 2 years.

Good luck!

I agree with others about moving up to "goodnights" type pull-ups. We always had to switch to Huggies Overnights at some point to keep beds dry in the am, but my kids were tiny and when they trained right about age 3 and were still wearing size 3 diapers. One time when I couldn't find the overnight diapers, I checked the goodnights and the size range was just way too big for my kids. They might be a good solution since it sounds like your son is bigger.

The other thought I have for you is One Step Ahead catalog has a great bed pad that holds something like 6 cups of fluid. It's oversized so they can scoot around and are still protected. I got mine for early overnight training to not need to change everything in the middle of the night. They have tabs that wrap around the side of the bed and hold it in place too. It might keep any changes confined to just the pad which would be easier to deal with.

Maybe try switching brands of diapers during the day too. I found that only Pampers Cruisers worked for my kids.

stop giving fluids 2-3 hours prior to bedtime.

Might have to check on him in middle of night and change.

Hello K.,
My name is M. and I am the mother of a 3 year old. I started potty training him in may of this year and he turns 3 tomorrow. He would not do it at first and I just kept asking and finally I got advise from someone on this site stating to get him a potty seat that fit over the regular seat. When I got that he loved sitting on the potty and was peeing all the time because his legs did not hurt from trying to hold himself up on the big set, but no poo poo. I also got advise from on this site to tell him that the potty needed to eat to and we needed to feed him by him pooping. Well, that also helped as well as letting him wear his cartoon underwear he felt like a big boy. Now he only has accidents once in a while, but he will not get off of the potty if he has to poo poo, even if it takes 20 minutes to come out he stays put until it does. I hope this helped, even if a little.

Good Luck

M.
