Need Help with Leaky Nighttime Diaper!

Hi! I would love suggestions on a good diaper for overnight (or other suggestions). My son is 20 months old and fortunately sleeps very well at night (about 11-12 hours). However, lately he either wakes in the middle of the night all wet or in the morning wet. He weighs 32 lbs (and, yes, this is in proportion to his height) so he's in a size 5 diaper (27 lbs +). We have tried the Huggies brand Overnites in size 5, and we've also tried using size 6 diapers, but those are for 35lbs or greater. We have found that the size 6 don't fit him well around the legs and are leaking worse than the Overnites. I've also tried changing him right before I go to bed, which is a few hours after he goes down, but he gets upset and I'd rather not do that. We've had issues w/leaky diapers in the past but we've always been able to solve it with putting him in Overnites or the next size larger.
Thanks in advance for the help!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much to everyone who responded. I have never even heard of Diaper Doublers, or some of the other products mentioned. Now we have quite the selection of solutions! We bought some Diaper Doublers and coupled it with size 5 Overnites, and that worked last night. The night before I put a size 6 Huggies over the size 5 Huggies and that worked also. Gotta use up what we already have, and then I'll start exploring other brands. Thanks again!

I have always had good luck with regular Pampers. I tried Huggies with my 1st child and they always leaked, never had a problem with Pampers. They are a little more expensive but worth it not to have leaks all the time.

Maybe its time to start potty training. If he goes to the bathroom before bed his diaper would not be so wet in the morning.

A. - We love KozyKids. You can buy them at www.MyShoppingNanny.com. Put "diaper" in the search engine. They are totally worth the investment if nothing at the stores are working. Good Luck. You have been given lots of great tips.

I would try putting in those diaper doublers. If you cannot find those, they I bet a women's Serenity or maxi pad for overnights would also work.

Did you try the Huggies size 6? Our son is 30 pounds and has been wearing the size 6 for months, even though like you said, they are for 35 lbs. and greater. He's pretty skinny, but they fit him and do not leak. Otherwise, I've heard people put maxi pads in the diapers for extra absorption.

I had this same exact problem with my little guy too. I feel like I am reading my own post.
I even bought the plastic training underpants to cover his diaper. It was too bulky. The ONLY thing that worked for us was altering his bottle schedule before bed. At that time, he was getting 8 oz of milk prior to bed and then peeing through at night.
So I changed it up a bit.
I gave him 4 oz of milk about 2 hours before bed (after dinner) and then only a 4 oz bottle at bedtime. That solved it for us.
Good luck!

I've heard someone else suggest using overnight maxipads at the waistline, in addition to using the overnight diapers. If that is where he is leaking. I would try securing it at the top of the diaper, where there is already a little ridge of extra absorbancy. Hopefully that will catch any extra that is trying to get out. Good luck!

Try the Costco Kirkland brand; they work better than most pullups overnight and are so much cheaper. We also started using the potty before bath time, and then once again before bed, even though potty training was well into our future. Here's to dry mornings!

Use the plastic underwear older moms used with diapers it helps even if you have to use two. My niece has the same issue she is 10mths old and has been doing this since birth. It does work pick up a pair you will see your drama is over. My niece is a very big and tall girl and she has no problems with using the training covers or diaper covers which ever one they are called.

After Dominick's stopper carrying Diaper Doublers I found an online store that carries them:

http://www.nwenteral.com/Detail.bok?no=18

However, you have to buy them by the case. (My sister-in-law needed them for her baby, too, so we split the case.)

I fold a doubler in half before inserting into my son's diaper -- for even more protection. He never wakes up wet anymore.

Hi A.,

My 24 month old son is also in a size 5 diaper (30 pounds) and very luckily for me has been sleeping 12 hours through the night since he was about 12 weeks old. I have found that the overnight diapers consistently leak, while just the regular Huggies Natural Fit almost never do (when I say almost never, I mean that he leaks through once a month at the most). Hope this helps!

I'm with the other Mommies. Both my children sleep 11 hours a night (no waking or diaper changes -- yay!!!!!) without any diaper leaks. I use "Huggies Overnight" diapers on each of them, plus I add a "Diaper Doubler" in the diaper. "Diaper Doubler" is is just like a maxi-pad, but it doesn't have the sticky adhesive. You can find them at Babies R Us (the Dominick's near us no longer carries them).

Since the cost per diaper significantly increases when you move up in size, I found that adding the "Diaper Doubler" (instead of putting them in a larger diaper) was more economical.

11-12 hours is a long time to stay in one diaper -- but this worked for us! Good luck!!

I would use Huggies Overnight diapers, and add a Diaper Doubler in it. They sell Diaper Doublers in the diaper aisle at Jewel and Dominick's. They are like a woman's feminine pad and you place them in the diaper.

So....if I'm right, you haven't tried size 6 Overnights? If that's the case then maybe you should try them even though the weight on the label may not match your sons weight. My son is 1 1/2 and he's been in size 6 Luvs diapers for months now. He weighs 26 lbs. Don't know if his weight matches the label on his diapers. That didn't matter. As long as they fit then it doesn't matter. My nephew weighs 4 lbs. more than my son but he's a shrimp (very skinny and short) so he wore a size 4 before he was potty trained (hes 3 years old and was even smaller than my 1 year old son). To me weight doesn't always matter.
Maybe you should switch brands too. Try Luvs, Pampers, etc. Also, what about Pull-Ups? Have you tried those?

Have you tried pampers size six? My daughter (she just turned two) is huge. We were having the same problem at around eighteen months with her...also a big bay as well, probably about 34lbs at the time...I switched to pampers size 6 from huggies and haven't had too many issues since. I think also that at this age they begin to hold it longer, so when it comes out there is a lot. Hope this helps.

My son sleeps at LEAST 12 hours a night as well, but he is only 12 months. I know his Huggies diapers always leaked real bad at night. We switched to Pampers cruisers and he has been dry ever since. I'm not sure if the age difference would make a difference... but I hope not because those Pampers are a God-send for us. :) Good luck! Let us know if you find something that works for you.

My son was / is a heavy wetter. What we've found will work in those "in between" times when we can't simply go to the next size up are doublers. I've only been able to find them at Dominick's, and basically all it is, is a thick pad that lines the inside of the diaper. I have always found they work best with the next size up & the extra bulk takes up that extra space. I've heard to limit their fluid intake right before bed. Our son never has drank a ton at night (past dinner) so that's not really our issue, but I have heard it as a suggestion before.

We had the same problem with my 15 month old daughter. Someone told us about Diaper Doubles. We found them at Babies R Us. Pretty much it is like putting a pad in their diaper. It helps with extra absorbancy. They came in a 30 pack for $5.99. We haven't had a leek since. They are disposable....good luck!

My son always leaked through his diapers at night as well. He is 3 1/2 now and no longer leaks every night but still does sometimes. He is in pull ups for nap and night time. Now by 1 year old has begun leaking through his diapers at night. I never figure out what to do except us the huggies overnites and sometimes they worked and other times they didn't. My neighbor always told me that her son, who is now 18, use to leak like that too. I guess they use to have special pads to put into boys diapers back then to help prevent leaking at night. She said they were like a maxipad but not. I never found any of those. If my son continues to leak out I am considering putting two diaper on him. Sounds crazy I know but it would sure beat having to wash bedding every day! So, if you find the magic answer please let me know. Good luck

I got a pair of training pants through www.onestepahead.com for my 4 year old that occasionally wets the bed. They are only about $13 so you could try to either just use that (they are VERY absorbant!!) or you could try a diaper with the training pant over the diaper! GOOD LUCK stinky sheets and mattresses are the worst!!

I don't have a good diaper for you because the truth is they all leak. I have found that if I cut out as much aspartamine (fake sugar) from my children's diet they wet less. For whatever reason crystal light lemonade and drinks make them go like crazy. This is also true of many sodas. I don't let them have any with dinner for this reason. If I leave them at someone's house and they happen to have it with their dinner my 4 year old potty trained boy will have an accident every time and sometimes even my older child will too. She had accidents up until she was 7 from the drinks. ( I don't give it to them any more so I don't know if she still would have one)

Dominics used to sell diaper doublers which are basically bladder protection pads without the adhesive. Now that we can't get them at Dominics anymore, we just buy the bladder pads - great thing is that you can choose the amount of protection.

You may have already heard this advice, but try changing brands? My kids and some other families I know could never wear huggies. We'd have countless leaks with them. Our trustworthy brand was always Pampers. Its funny cause I've heard other moms say they couldn't wear Pampers for the same reason. Must be something in the way our kids behinds and legs are built!

It sounds like you have already gotten some great advice about the leaky diaper issue, which is good since I don't have any additional advice for you about that. However, even though you didn't specifically ask about this, that problem usually goes with the hassle of having to change the bed sheets and possibly the mattress pad as well.

For that issue, I highly recommend "Dri Nights" from both www.onestepahead.com and www.leapsandbounds.com (they are the same company). If you do a product search on their websites, you can see and read all about them. They are $18-$23 each, plus shipping, depending on how many you buy and the size of your son's mattress. They have been a huge timesaver with my 3 and 5 year old kids, and they are particularly a lifesaver when I don't have to change the whole bed in the middle of the night when they wake up with wet sheets.

Regarding changing sheets when there is a leak in the middle of the night - double the plastic and fitted sheet. Put your plastic mattress protector on, then a fitted sheet, then another plastic mattress protector, then another sheet. So if the bed does get wet, you just have to pull of the top two layers and the bed is already made.
