Good Morning Mama's!
My 3 year old is totally potty trained (finally). She now refuses to use the "little potty" or the toddler seat that sits on the "big potty". So the problem is this...her pee squirts forward and "magically" makes it between the underside of the toilet seat and the toilet. Her big girl underwear & pants get soaked, as well as, my floor. My husband is convinced that something is wrong, I just wish I could figure out how to train the pee to go down instead of forward. I have had her scoot further back on the toilet. I have also removed her pants & underwear so she could spread out, thinking maybe she was closing her legs to tight and forcing the pee forward. Both of these solutions were unsuccessful. Have any of you experienced this with your little girls and what did you do? She has done so well on the potty & she gets upsent when she gets everything wet even though she made it on the potty. I use tons of positive reinforcements, but I would love for this not to happen instead. thanks in advance for all of your help! - MJ
Thanks Mama's! My stubborn little girl did not like the idea of sitting backwards on the potty (she is just like her Daddy, LOL) So, we were able to solve the problem by instructing her to put her "tummy on her legs" while peeing. Horray, it worked!!! Thank you to all of the fantastic Mamma's who make up our Mammasource community, for your helpful advice!! Have a great day!

My friend has this problem with her daughter. She simply had her sit on the toliet backwards. Now she will have to take her undies and pants off, otherwise her legs will get tangled up. It seems to keep the pee in the toliet though!
Oh goodness - I've had this problem. You're on the right track - have her sit a little back with legs a little more spread out and have her bend down leaning on her legs with elbows and arms flat on her legs and look straight out, not look down into the potty. That's what my daughter would do - she'd look down and the position of the body would change and it would squirt out. Looking straight out with the body leaning at a 45 degree angle works for her with the pee going down instead of out.
We also got this double potty seat from home depot where the top one is a smaller child size one that can be flipped down when the child wants to use it. The bottom one is the bigger adult one. I think it's great and easier for them to balance so there's no squirting issues. :) good luck!
That happened to us only a few times, but what I found to be the find of the century was a family toilet seat. It has the small seat for kids attached inside the lid! I investigated in a number of different brands and purchased the Xpress Trainer Pro All-in-One Family Toilet Seat. Here is the link to it on Amazon.com
http://www.amazon.com/Xpress-Trainer-One-Real-Round-Stand...
They have the seat in round or elongated so you can get the one that fits your toilet. It is under $30 and the best investment EVER!!! The only 2 things I wish they would improve on are: When the lid is down, if you sit on it you can feel it dip in a bit - not a huge deal since we really dont stand or sit on the seat when it is closed. The other is I wish they had other color options - we have an almond toilet with the white seat (it works so well that I really don't mind!). You will be able to see from the pictures that the kids seat actually fit over and is molded over the adult seat.
Good luck!
Hi M.,
I just potty trained my daughter who just turned 3 also and we had the exact same problem. Seems eventually, just a couple weeks later, she learned on her own how to 'point down'. They also sell the potty seats with a front shield as well. i have one (unused) that mine refused to use. Its Dora and brand new.
I used to turn my daughter to face the back of the toilet. The draw back is you have to remove the pants completely but they stay dry and there is no mess in the bathroom either. Hope this helps.
Yep, it's happened here too! Lol! I agree she needs to lean forward, or try having her drop down a little lower... It's that gap between the seats it comes through, so if she can get lower, it won't happen.
I use to have my kids sit backwards, facing the tank. I did this until they got a little bigger. This seemed to help because they are so small. Don't know if you already tried this or if it will work but thought I'd pass on some of my old tricks. Good luck.
LOL! My daughter did the same thing! We had her lean all the way forward, basically so she her tummy was on her lap, if that makes sense. Then she peed down. Just have her lean as far forward as you can~ good luck!
my son takes off pants and undies and sits on the toilet backwards. (facing the tank) it always goes down. and also the circumference is bigger so no worries about falling in
We had the same problem! Get her to put her legs together and lean forward. The pee will then go down instead of straight out. (My husband also thought something must be wrong with her LOL)

Both of my little girls had the same issue. Teach her to lean forward when she is going potty and yes, try to move her backward, but having her lean forward should do the trick.
For her to be peeing out, she has to be sitting to close to the edge of the potty. Buy one of those potty rings to make your toilet opening smaller for her. Tell her mommy needs the big opening because mommy is all grown up and she needs the little opening because she's a little girl (not baby) Remember, she wants to be grown up like you. Let her know that she won't get wet anymore. Good luck mom (I envy you)
My little girl did the same thing. She is now three. I had her close her legs when she pees. It directs the stream downward. Have fun and good luck! -J.
I have found that with my daughter, if she keeps her knees together and leans forward, we don't have a problem.
Good luck!
legs together keeps it from squirting! Every mom learns this the hard way, lol.
Uhg, I have dealt with the problem as well. I think it's because they don't lean forward enough while peeing. See if she will cooperate and bend forward toward her knees, this usually helps. Now I have a little boy who likes to see where he can squirt his pee, sometimes missing the inside of the bowl. These are messy years.
M.,
Have her sit on the toilet backwards. It WORKS perfectly! She won't have any wobbly/balancing problems either. It's easier! It's just a more stable way for the tinier girls to master the throne.
We have had the same exact thing here with my little girl! She is just now to the point where she can sit forward and go without a spraying out problem but she only recently turned forward and just yesterday she was all proud to show me she could leave her little undies at her ankles. She will be 5 next month but on the small side compared to her classmates.
My daughter climbed up on the toilet BACKWARDS up until about age 4 1/2 to avoid the arc of her peepee going forward and out and all over the place. If they climb on backwards, they have much more room for that arc because they will be sitting practically to the front edge of the seat and aiming towards the back. Yes, she had to take the panties all the way off to do this, but it works and potty time is just a few seconds and she is confident and there are no accidents. There is so much more room for the stream to land right.
It always baffled me how other little girls could just sit and have their peepee go straight down because I helped in the church nursery and saw other 3 year olds sit in the regular way just fine. Up until reading your post, I thought that actualy BOTH my little girls were the only ones who had to sit wide or backwards, but I guess it's just not talked about too much and is completely normal and common. I think as they get bigger, they can just balance themselves on the toilet enough to sit the right way so the potty goes where it should but until them, the backwards sit is a very fitting solution.
I actually just recently had the same problem w/my daughter. I started putting her backwards and this corrected the problem but I think she was probably doing this at school as well so they pretty much taught her how to go the right way. What I observed w/her is that she now sits the right way but kind of dunks her but more into the potty and she seems comfortable and no more peeing on the floor. It will work out, try putting her backwards it will eliminate the mess each time and the best NO MORE DIAPERS YEAH!!! Show your husband some of these responses and tell him this is very normal and just a part of the growing up and learning process. Good Luck
Tell your husband nothing is wrong, it is normal. Try to have sit backwards (face the toilet). That usually worked with my daughter.
Good luck!

I'm laughing because I didn't know any better and started training my oldest right before a vacation. So we are in the airport and she's on the HUGE potty and she pee's right out the front all over me. I had to walk around with pee soaked clothes for the whole trip.
I learned from her and then later working with 3 year olds at church that you have to make little girls lean forward while they potty. I thought something was wrong with my little one too, but it's not unusual. Just have her lean forward when she goes potty and you won't have the messes anymore.
One of my granddaughters did this and what we did was put her on the big potty backwards It does require that her pants and underwear are removed. It worked and eventually we moved her in the other direction as she improved and was not so mind set on how and where she was doing "her business"
I don't have girls.... so I'm not sure this will resolve your problem.
My little men have always sat on the potty backwards (facing the tank)
The when they get bigger they turn around. I think it started because when they are small they don't feel like they will fall in the bowl.
I'm sure when your little girl gets bigger she won't have this problem!
Good luck.
I just wanted to say I was laughing as I read this. My daughter is also 3 and we had this problem as well. My husband and I were just talking about it this last weekend, and he comented about how she's probably the only girl that can pee like a boy. Anyway, my daughter eventually solved the problem by leaning forward when she pees.
I have to laugh because this is like Dejavu for me! My daughter peed straight out too when she first started. Her daycare provider said that in all her years she'd never seen anything like it. The solution: Teach her to lean forward...we told her to touch her tummy to her legs...no more peeing out straight! No more issues! Good Luck!
My daughter had the exact same problem and my husband was also convinced there was something wrong. I guess he figured a girl couldn't pee straight out like a boy. For us, it was insisting that she sit straight up on the potty and keep her legs as closed as possible this way the pee went down. We haven't had a problem since. Her problem was that she got up on the potty and was leaning all over, playing around. She would soak her clothes, the floor, everything. We just tell her firmly sit up and no playing. She has done great! I would give it a try.
