Ok- I was told that girls were easier then boys with potty training-not in my case. My 3 1/2 yr old dtr finally is potty trained and we couldn't be happier. problem is- sometimes when she goes 'pee'- it flows down her legs onto her pants even though she is sitting on the potty. Usually happens at really inconvenient times( ie grocery store bathroom) and I can't figure outhow to fix it. Anyone else had this problem?????

What can I do next?

Have her lean forward, with her elbows on her thighs. You know how we do when we are leaning over resting when we are pottying. This way her peepee is facing completely downward and the pee shoots straight down. Yes I went through this and I had my daughter do this and the way I got her to do this was I had her lean forward to talk to me. Usually helped, but not everything is perfect. She did grow out of it. Time makes everything get better. Good luck.

spread her legs farther apart, even if it means taking her pants and shoes off...I had to do the same with my son

That was unexpected with my daughter as well. We had to get her to lean forward on the potty and it seemed to work. Good luck!

Make sure she is over the toilet, leaning toward her knees and pants all the way down. Consult doctor if it continues.

My daughter is 3 yrs old and this used to happen to her all the time. I didn't realize it happens to other little girls too. I told her to sit back far enough and lean forward a little. This did the trick and so far it hasn't happened anymore. Good luck :)

Hi C., My name is Charmaine and I am a mother of 3, 2 girls and 1 boy. All of my children are adults now and I am now a grandmother of 10. 6 girls and 4 boys so I think I have some experience is this. When I would take the girls into any bathroom I would make sure their legs are spread as far as they can go. And make sure that they are sitting back on the toilet. But before even putting them on make sure to use the liners. If they don't have any you can buy some or use toilet paper which can be placed on the toilet. It's a matter of gravity. If she is not sitting where her urine can go into the toilet it will get on her.

Hope this helps..
Charmaine

This used to happen to my daughter, too. Sometimes, the urine shoots out instead of down! I have her sit back more on the potty, keep her legs together, and lean forward a bit. That seems to do the trick. Good luck!

Hi C.,

I am the mom of four, three boys one girl. My 3-year-old daughter makes a bigger "mess" on the potty than any of her older brothers. One trick I found, although it takes longer, is to have her sit facing the back of toilet. It gives her more "room". It involves taking her pants off one leg, but that extra step has saved me extra cleanup, and her the embarassment of being "wet".

Her Pediatrician said everything is "normal" it just is how things "work" on her tiny little body for now. I assume when she gets a little older and has more control of things, she won't need to do this anymore.

i always go to the bathroom before leaving the house and have the children do the same. i tell them we won't be going while we are out and that if they have to go while we are out, they will have to hold it. That is because i don't like using public bathrooms. If they say they do not have to go i tell them to just go and try just to make sure. i remember telling them once that they have control over their bodies and that their bodies listen to them. i have stopped the car a few times for son to go somewhere outside and discreet by the car but daughter never has needed to so much--then i made sure to make sure he was going before we left the house.
also tell her she needs to sit with her tush towards the middle of the pot and down in it a but so the pee goes more backward than forward. Sometimes the kids kindof sit with tush up high-yes?

Hi C.,

I encourage you to get her to try different positions and to mention this to your pediatrician at your next visit. My daughter's abnormal urine flow ended up being due to a cyst that had to be removed. Good luck!

Usually this happened to my little daughter when the toilet seat was open in the front (such as in most public restrooms). We figured out that she needed to sit with her legs together on those toilets, so that everything would go in it's proper place! :-) Hope this helps you.

It happened to my daughter too, especially when her daddy was with her. I have her lean slightly forward. She usually sits on the regular seat, with no little seat. So far, has been good.
Good luckh.

Try to have her lean forward with her tummy more against her legs while she goes potty. My daughter had the same issue & this seemed to solve the problem.

Make sure she pulls her pants down to her ankles and spread her knees farther apart - that's what helped my girls. Or have her hold toilet paper between her knees.

I experienced this, too. For my daughter it was how long she waited to go and then how she was sitting on the toilet. She seemed to wait until the last possible second before informing me that she had to go. Then, she'd just fling herself on the toilet and position herself so that it didn't go into the toilet. It wasn't often, though, so I really attribute it to waiting too long to go.

I've had that happen with my daughters and it was just a matter of the legs being pressed together. I just make sure to spread their legs a little so there is a little space between them and then there isn't a trough for the pee to run down. Hope this helps and I've been there. I feel for you. Messes always happen out in public. I had to buy new underwear once while out for this exact reason. Good luck!

Hello C.! I have fallen victim to that old saying 2 times, and it looks like I may be going for the 3rd! My first ds was 3 1/2 and my 2nd was 4 before they were potty trained. In fact, we had to take away the 2nd's 4th birthday to break through her stubborness to get her to use the bathroom. I know, it sounds crazy, but it worked! I just told her she couldn't turn 4 until she stopped wetting in her pants because 4 year olds pee on the potty. My youngest will be 3 the beginning of April, and she, too has not interest in using the potty. I have learned to relax, and them go at their pace. My mother in law always says, they won't take their diaper bag with them when they go to college or walk down the aisle! Good luck from someone else who's been there! A.

Hello! My daughter (nearly 7 now) sees a pediatric urologist for overactive bladder and some other minor issues. I learned from her to have my dtr spread her legs apart more when she pees. I'm not sure if this will help your particular problem as our problem is a little different but it might be worth trying.

My daughter used to have a problem with that too. Not all the time, but sometimes (and yes, a couple times in public toilets). We would talk about her "squirting." I would position her legs a bit apart when I set her on the potty. "Whoops, I squirted." That is what she began to say when it happened. So she was realizing when it was happening too. That helped her learn how to arrange her body herself so that she didn't "squirt."
