Any advice on how to get my 3 1/2 year old son to poop on the potty? He would rather stand in the middle of a room and poop in his underwear or right on the floor if i leave him naked....he shows no signs before he poops and does it so fast we can't catch him to put him on th toilet.............help

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Today it happened!!!!!!!!!!we put the potty in the tv room when we saw a change in the look on his face, and he pooped..we went crazy, doing our version of the poopy dance and gave him the things we promised if he pooped on the potty... The problem is he poops at no particular time so there is no predictability...WE ALWAYS MAKE HIM DUMP THE PEE AND POOP IN THE POTTY....hopefully this is a good start...thanks for the ideas..keep um comin'

when my son was that age he completely refused to use the potty... unfortunately he learned the harder way but we had him completely potty trained in a week. we told him that he didnt have to use the potty but if he made a mess he had to clean it up by himself. so everytime he made a mess thats exactly what he did. he made a mess about four times before he realized that he hated having to clean up after himself. after that it was smooth sailing. one tip though make sure that you go over whatever he had to clean up to make sure its all gone. just dont let him see you do this. good luck hope this was helpful.

If he goes at a regular time, you could have him sit on the potty at that time for (my pediatrician suggested)atleast 10 minutes or so. My son really liked the timer, so we set it and brought it in with us. Also, I used small, wrapped presents. I had them in a bowl and after he pooped on the potty, he was allowed to pick one and unwrap it. Dollar store, garage sales and used baby stores are a great source for small treats wrapped in newspaper so it doesn't get too expensive or out of hand. Or you could try the handful of candy (mini-m&m's, a gummi bear) for every time he goes on the pot. I know its hard and takes time, but I just kept telling myself that they don't go off to college in pull-ups!!

Hi S. ,

We just went through this with my almost five year old! It took one week but he is a profesional poopy man now. Trust me some boys just go when they need to. I used the star chart and a prize. My son loves M&MS, yes I know we don't like to give our kids sweets but this worked! I let him know that when he felt like he had to poop to go and sit on the potty, I put his star chart right in front of him on the wall and his prize in a bag right in front of him and then I gave him his privacey. I also went to the dollar store and bought a few toys so that he got an award right away if he pooped. This realy worked, it took one week and alot of patience but I let him take his time, this is the joy of being an Say At Home Mom.

Good luck

Melanie

Give him books to look at while on the potty. Make the potty an interesting place to sit. Talk to him while he is there. If your child is regular, like maybe you notice he has to go an hour after you feed him, you can anticipate it and sit him on the potty and play a game together. Make sure you give positive praise for sitting on the potty even if he doesn't go. This helps him associate the potty as a good place to be.

Hopefully you have a training potty. A lot of kids are afraid of the adult toilets for fear of falling in. Even with the trainer seats that sit on top it can be scary for them.

You didn't mention if he already pees in the potty.
