Portable Washing Machines?

We live in a 111 year old building, with no washer/dryer hookups and no possibility of having some installed because it would take a major re-plumbing and re-wiring and the landlord is unwilling. I've recently discovered that there is such a thing as a portable washer, and I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with them? Any recommended brands or brand to avoid?

Thanks in advance!

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone who answered my question, I've decided to go ahead and get a portable machine! I'm excited to eliminate the dreaded trip to the laundromat. Again, thanks to everyone for their good advice.

We bought one from Sears for about $500.00 when our two sons were young. It was a 10 pound washer but worked just like the larger ones. The clothes came our really clean. It hooked up to the kitchen sink like a dishwasher. It had wheels and one just rolled it to the sink. We had clothes lines and that worked much better than going to the laundromat. When I was in high school, my Mom had a small washer that sat on top of the kitchen counter. It was small and one could wash one or two items in it but good when you needed something and didn't want to take the time to go to the laundromat. I was a teen and took our clothes to the laundromat on Saturday as my Mom worked.

Hello, Mine are Kenmore products (Sears brand), they are not too expensive and work very well....as most Kenmore products do.

L.,

I have a washer and dryer (apartment size). The washer hooks up to the sink and works great. The washer is easy to move around, and I actually put a table cloth over it and put my big cutting board on it and it doubles for a butcher block in my kitchen.

The dryer is electric just plugs in has a big filter that must be cleaned after each cycle. I think they are Kenmore.

They both work great!

Blessings....

I knew a friend who took his portable washer on the road. it was small- probalby similar to one you'd find in the skymall catalog. I know it was perfect for him to wash a change of clothes but I'm not sure that he could fit much more. So, for a family it doesn't sound very practical.

Hi L.,

I've never used a portable washer or dryer... but I have had a portable DISH washer and it worked GREAT!! Just hook up to your sink, let it run it's cycle and then disconnect. It even has a counter top so that it's not an eye sore for your kitchen and you can use it for extra counter space. ;) Just thought I'd throw that out there, not sure if you need a dish washer... but it makes life a little easier. Good Luck.

Hi L.,

I just moved out of SF and right before having a baby, I bought a portable diswasher. It works wonders! It is not portable to the point you can take it with you everywhere but I could roll it anywhere in the house and hook it to the kitchen or bathroom sink.

The best brand is called Avanti and I bought mine online from a company called Compact Appliance. There is another brand called Haier (I think) that I believe is cheaper but it is much lower quality.

Ping me if you are interested in buying a used one. I moved to a house in the suburbs that had W/D so I don't need mine anymore.

Hi L.,
I have only heard of portable dishwashers but if they have that they probably also have washers. I believe they also have washer/dryer in one units....Try Sears, Kenmore. They have everything, including apartment sized stuff.
Good Luck
